  • This DIY details exactly how to retrofit LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) exterior lighting to BMW E60 5-series built before March, 2007. The LCI facelifted the headlights and tail lights, vastly updating it's exterior appearance both during the day and at night.
    REQUIRED PARTS: *Options such as Xenon, Bi-Xenon, and Adaptive Headlights can change part numbers. Refer to RealOEM.com to determine exactly which parts you need. For this 9/2005 production 2006 model year E60 M5 with option 522 XENON LIGHT and 524 ADAPTIVE LIGHT we used the following part numbers:
    (Qty 1) 63127045695 Left LCI headlight, bi-xenon, adaptive: bit.ly/3n8ZnoV
    (Qty 1) 63127045696 Right LCI headlight, bi-xenon, adaptive: bit.ly/3HFMvjk
    (Qty 1) 63217361593 Left LCI tail light: bit.ly/3zTkRgU
    (Qty 1) 63217361594 Right LCI tail light: bit.ly/3NbxAPh
    (Qty 1) 61359203082 Light Module: bit.ly/3N8aV6b
    (Qty 1) 61120432110 Retrofit wiring kit: bit.ly/3xLoZwS
    *LIGHT MODULE
    Vehicles produced BEFORE 6/2006 require a new Light Module. Vehicles produced in or after 6/2006 will only require moving 2 pins and then coding.
    *REAR LIGHTS
    We found that pins 4 and 6 need to be switched on both rear tail lights. Switch pins 4 and 6 on the factory wiring harness, not the tail light adapter cables included retrofit wiring kit 61120432110. This was only required after coding for proper function of the tail lights. Depending on how you do your coding, you may or may not need to adjust the pinning.
    *CODING
    Our shop found success with their Autologic software for coding/programming the Light Module. I have since done this job in our San Diego based service shop, and successfully completed the coding using NCS Expert.

    If you take off the strip of foam lining from right above the front bumper cover and remove the torch bolts, you can pull it forward and out of the way so that the lights don’t catch on their inner corners.

    Have you ever considered sourcing new parts from Schmiedmann? They're in Europe but their shipping to the US is quite fast. The parts costs there are significantly lower than from a US-based seller like ECS/Turner. For example, I got the official Hella Celis tail light retrofit kit for only $350 shipped to my door back when I had an M5, versus $500 from Turner.

It appears when I turn my headlights/ taillights on at this time I get absolutely no power to my taillights, is that normal due to the lack of coding? Or is something miswired?

    Hello! Great explanation and very helpful tips throughout. I've done this retrofit on my E60 (5/2006) originally only with bixenon (no adaptive), only to find that i have trouble getting the "adaptive/auto leveling function" to work on the new LCI adaptive headlights(the LCI taillights are working as intended). I've followed the PDF instructions, got LM2 AHL, new bulbs, new d1s ballasts and new adaptive modules(SMC II). An error is shown when trying to code it, namely that it's not establishing a connection to the adaptive modules. The coding shop is suggesting that i've bought the wrong modules, are yours SMC or SMC II? and do you think SMC II is the issue here (i've seen LCI E60s wit SMC II)?

    Is it just the E60 M5 that doesn’t have a key hole on the trunk or are all E60’s built after a certain date missing the key hole? My wife’s 2005 545i has the key hole and can be opened with the key if you have no power. Lucky for me I can do that because I had the battery unhooked once and closed the trunk not even thinking about not having power. Her car was built in September 2004 and is a 2005 model that has the keyed ignition and not the newer key fob and push start button.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  6 років тому

      The E60 M5s actually have that adhesive piece of body on the trunk lid under where the badge goes (on either side of the license plate) that probably cover up the hole that is there on all other standard series E60 models. So I'm guessing that its just the M5 without a keyhole back there.

    • @porscheguy09
      @porscheguy09 6 років тому

      E39Source you’re exactly right. I never ever noticed that the M5 had that piece on the trunk before. I guess I just never paid attention to it. I wonder why BMW even put that piece on the M5. It’s not aerodynamic or anything beneficial. I guess they just did it for looks.

      It depends on the production date of your car. Vehicles produced BEFORE 6/2006 require a new Light Module. Vehicles produced in or after 6/2006 will only require moving 2 pins and then coding. A new light module will always have to be coded.

      Hi mate. I've decided to go probably the hardest possible route now. Bought myself a set of LCI Dynamic headlights and LM2 AHL. (Mine were pre lci halogen lights)
      In terms of rear lights and lm2 I've Changed two pins as you (And btw document mentioned) and wanted to add two wires from the back. Pins 5 and 62. Funny enough as they were already taken by same coloured wires.
      Swapped them with new ones. Still looks like there is a problem with bmw retrofit plugs.
      In terms of headlights.
      Wiring diagrams doesn't make it easy as wires are different to what I have here as well as my new headlights doesn't use pin no 8 at all.
      Got a feeling it's gonna be a rocky and bumpy road to get them fully working.
      I'd appreciate any kind of mentoring here.
      All the best! Pete
