okay, time for me to drop my interpretation of what the lyrics mean. personally, i dont think this child died in a storm, or is even harmed at all. i think it's about a child who has difficulty connecting with their peers, making friends, and generally being social. the question "did everyone already go home?" implies a difficulty understanding social cues, and that people dont generally hang out with them. it's also implied that this child is playing alone in the rain, connecting with the outdoors as a sort of way to cope on their own. "everyone else can play and get along together" implies that they can't do that, or see it that way. they've accepted their position as an outcast, theyll hide their tears in the rain and try to be happy out there, connecting with the world alone.

I have come to the painful realisation that that isn’t normal. It always felt off though. Something wasn’t right but I was trying to brush it off as nothing because I thought this is normal. My friends still just kinda adopted me and drag me around with them though. I still just couldn’t connect properly. I have social anxiety so that’s probably why, but my friends still love me and include me. To anyone without any friends, I know it might be hard, almost impossible to make friends, please know it’s so much better in the long run and I hope you feel better

While this song doesn’t really seem that dark, I have an interpretation I can’t quite shake.
This song feels like a child has found that there is something not quite right with themself. The strangeness isn’t evil; but it’s still the nervous, peeking hint of an issue that will one day arrive.
Like the “rain” is an unpleasantness nested within the soul that won’t go away, or that is part of the soul itself.
It reminds me how people with mental illness often realize that there is something amiss with themself, possibly first knowing in childhood, but they lack the self-awareness to see the problem as a whole. Also that mental health issues can “come online” as the brain develops. What was once a hidden, undetected illness has sprung to life as a consuming, merciless misery.

This remembered me of "Missing Halloween"
Kikuo's songs are going through a softer and more emotional era. Like the whole "Gomene gomene" era was terrifying and deep but now you can kind of relate to his songs and imagine it for your own life. It's so melodiccccc ~
But I'm glad it still kept the kind of melancholic and kind of creepy vibe. It's more emotional, yes, but still feels a bit unsettling in the best way possible. Kikuo just knows how to play with sounds so well.

Teru teru bozu is translated roughly to “good weather monk”. Its a like a good luck charm wishing for good weather that kids place up (the cute character) normally the day before a road trip or picnic. If the weather is bad the kid takes the charm and cuts off its head as punishment. The song is how teru teru bozo failed to make the weather good and feels disappointed on how he ruined everyones day. Almost if the clouds are mocking him for not doing a good job.

@@nappyhappy1734 it's thought to be based off a story about a monk who promised a sunny day after rain, but of course the day ended up not being sunny... so his head got chopped off and displayed as a punishment.

@@sleeping7026 Isn't that Yokai called Hahakigami? They only appear in cold weather, not specifically rain and they sweep out evil spirits. For Teru Teru Bozu, I am not sure if it is a Yokai or a lucky charm, either way my family believes that it's a lucky charm, rather than a Yokai. I believe in both.
There's this another Yokai called Hiyoribo, it's a Yokai that is said to brings sunny days, and who cannot be seen during rainy days. Teru Teru Bozu has a specific backstory, it is said that if the Teru Teru Bozu is successful and the following day's weather is clear, then the head of it is washed with sacred sake and the doll is sent into a river to be washed away. during the Edo Period, rivers were thought to connect to the Afterlife and the realm of gods.
There's this other story where a man got decapitated, his head wrapped in white cloth and hung it up in order to wish for a good weather in a village/farmland with continuous rain. The man promised that he will stop the weather for the sake of the farmers, but was unsuccessful.
There's this other story that came from China during Heian Period, it's about a girl with a broom. During a time of Heavy rainfall, a girl was sacrificed to save the city by heading up to the heavens where she would sweep rain clouds from the sky. Because of this story, people made paper cut-outs figures resembling her and would hang them outside in hope for good weather.

One of Kikuo's songs I relate to. As an only child born into a neighborhood with only adults, I was very lonely, weird and awkward around other kids. It took a long time for me to finally find a supporting friend group. Even now, I'm still not the best at conversation. It's hard being alone, even if you're spoiled to bits.

I was surrounded by loving family, yet I was still lonely. I was always a hard person to get to know because of my mental disability. I relate ;-;

Extremely late Theory time!
The song is about a Teru Teru Bozu, which has a theory by itself. A poor farmers daughter really needed rain to let the crops grow since it was a extremely sunny day in Summer, which means no rain at all, so they can be happy, the gods replied but only in a condition if the girl sacrificed herself. (If you’ve seen Weathering with You this would sound familiar) the girl agreed and the rain let all the crops grew.The farmer was upset that the daughter left him. He made a doll out of cloth that represent her and instead wished for sunlight to bring back his daughter.
Now this is where it relates to the song. The Teru Teru Bozu is in the rain, and the lyrics reads “Where is everyone?Did everybody already go home?” And “In the rain I was able to hide my tears” These lyrics alone would sound like a song about abandonment, which is the case for my theory. The other lyrics aren’t centered around these two lines, such as “Everyone else can play and get along well together” only seem to be a supportive claims of the two. The other lines seem to be indicating that this Teru Teru Bozu is a schoolgirl that is alone by herself all the time and was antisocial. She wasn’t bullied or anything, just left out. She didn’t claim much apart from this. Unfortunately I couldn’t find much other then this. If you read this, thank you so much! Please correct me if I missed out anything or if there’s anything else you want me to add

i really agree with the theories about the kid having some sort of disorder that makes it difficult to socialize, like anxiety or autism. i mean, it probably has a deeper meaning with it relating to the teru teru buzo, but as someone who struggles with those disorders i can totally relate to the lyrics

I personally think that the song is about Teru not being aware of what he was made for. He's meant to keep the rain away, but if you put him out and he is made of paper? Well when it inevitably rains he will dissolve and essentially die, which I think goes along with one tale about the doll having to do with a monk who promised to keep the rain away. When he couldn't do that he was killed. I think the song is supposed to point out how sad the tale can be and how sad the dolls fate is. It is essentially killed once it loses its use.
But this is just my theory! I'm not familiar with Japanese culture so this is just what I could pick up from reading a few articles on the subject, so correct me if I made a mistake somewhere.
the songs on kikuo miku 6 are some of my absolute favorites. i love how every one of them sounds lyrically and musically. i dont think kikuo could put out a bad song tbh.
