DIY Snail Trap

  • This is an easy and very inexpensive, and quite effective DIY snail trap for your aquarium.
    I've noticed that the traps will not be as effective after each use. I suspect that the snails release a stress hormone or something. If I remove the trap and bleach it after emptying it, the next catch will be much more successful.

    "if you still have your fingers on, it makes it easier to get the snails out of the trap" not often i laugh out loud at aquarium videos. well played good sir.

    Instead of a wafer for bait , try a slice of cucumber , 24hrs later and you’ll nearly have every snail in your tank. Snails lovvveee. Raw cucumber

    This was fantastic. You are so good at explaining things in detail. Please make more videos about taking care of fish! I thought it was sweet that your wife was there making sure you didn't drill into the tv tray. Seems like you are nice people.

      Joel101R the trap has worked well to control the snail population but I don't think it will eliminate it. how do you think I can wipe them out completely so I don't have to keep setting traps?

    • @Joel101R
      @Joel101R 7 років тому

      If you get the numbers down with the trap, you can add assassin snails to help with the rest. That also may not eliminate but it will help keep them down a bit.

      Assassin snails are helping and they are cleaner creatures but I can't seem to keep them alive. I think my water might be too hard. Or pH is too high. No sure.

      Try not feeding the tank for two days prior. Also put a tiny bit of different foods in the trap & give them a good variety to find what they like. The next thing would be the hole size in the caps. Make sure it's big enough to let them in.

    Drill the holes before you cut the bottles, no need to worry about the tv tray.

    Thanks! This really helped with my trumpet snail problem. I quarantined one for a week to let it get its eggs out or whatever, but after 6 months of having him in the tank, the population exploded from 1 to like 50. I have a 10 gal tank, so thats why it concerned me.

  • @ice1824

    better to drill the holes in the bottle caps before cutting the bottles down, gives you the whole bottle to hold on to that way and you dont have to worry about accidentally drilling through the table top

  • @ADUAquascaping
    @ADUAquascaping 8 років тому +7

    sweet trap man! yes, they can get out of control. Well, they are lower down on the food chain so they are actually decomposing the organics and making them easier for bacteria to break down, which is beneficial for the plants when utilizing the nutrients. The bio load isn't actually increased because they are decomposing what is already there into simpler form. Unless you are feeding more for the benefit of the snails there is no issue.

    My 75 gallon is infested. I'm going to make one over the weekend! I was crushing the snails for my angelfish, but that seemed to make them reproduce even faster. Spreading the eggs! Will let you know how it works out. I also tried a dose of copper power green. Its been 5 days, and haven't seen one dead snail.

    This is a very good improvement on the snails traps with just one side open. But, the method to drill the caps is very unsafe. What you need to do is keep the cap directly on the floor or even on the wood, use a hammer and nail to make a dent, then if you keep it on the floor and put some force u dont have to hold the cap at all, can drill it, but use short burts to make the dent bigger first

    Thanks for the video, very helpful! My Angelfish spawned and the snails found their eggs and devastated them! I didn't know that snails would eat eggs. :( Now I know I will use your idea to get rid of some of the population. Not many in the Angel's tank but my other tanks have a good sized population of them.

    • @Joel101R
      @Joel101R 8 років тому

      Good luck. Try different foods as bait. Also, the hole in the cap has to be larger than the fattest part of the snail in order for them to get in. Also, don't feed the tank any food for a day or two prior to adding the trap. If they're not hungry, they have no reason to go after the bait. ;)

    your goldfish will eat most snails, if they are big enough, i move snails from my 2 tanks without a goldfish into the 3 other tanks i have with goldfish and they all vanish pretty quickly, so fast i cant keep a minimum cleaning population except for a few full grown rams and trumpets, but all the adolescents, they suck them right out of shells or just suck babys off glass and eat them whole
