      @@neojnghonestly, if they did, you’d be annoyed. You’d also have no grounds to say you can’t do the exam I don’t think. At least not specifically on religious grounds. I’m not sure if public holidays would change that but then the same would apply to Boxing Day which obviously isn’t a religious day

    Will she be demanding these days off when she’s at work? We have lots of Christians in my place of work who have to give up Christmas and Easter because that is what the job entails. I have never heard anyone complain about it. We just understand that is what is expected of us. If we don’t like it we can go elsewhere or choose a different career path

    As a Jew may I say:
    Pentecost is not one of the “big three” - it’s a relatively minor holiday for most Jews
    Judaism is not one of the “big three” religions. It’s one of the three Abrahamic religions, but even grouping Christianity and Islam into two groups (which is insane in itself; Catholicism and Anglican are night and day, as are Sunni and Shia), the idea that Judaism is larger than Hinduism, Buddhism or even Sikhism is utterly laughable.

    • @Foxbandicoot9
      @Foxbandicoot9 Місяць тому

      @@jsworpinthis is a really good point, thank you
      I was not on her side at all until she pointed out they are accommodating Friday prayers. Then I started thinking well if they are changing timetables to suit one religious group, don’t they have a duty to do the same for all religious groups? (The alternative being that they ignore religion altogether, which would also be fair).
      But actually they are also accommodating other religions by giving them the entire days of Saturday (Judaism) and Sunday (most Christianity) off. So it’s more than fair in that context that they give an hour on Friday for Islam.
      Further, all these rules have a test of “reasonableness” at some stage. It’s more reasonable to ask for the same hour on every Friday during every week of every term (fairly easy to plan around) vs demanding two days in a one off/irregular and highly compressed exam diet (a nightmare to plan around).
      By offering her full credit for the “retest” date, they are giving a very courteous exemption they are not obliged to give

    Judaism is not one of the "three big religions". The three big religions (with around a billion adherents each) are Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. Judaism is absolutely tiny. Judaism is the sixth largest religion in the UK (Sikhism and Buddhism are also larger). If they were going to schedule exams around Jewish holidays, they would have to schedule around holidays for all six religions that size or larger. Some universities do try and do that, but it isn't reasonable to demand it - it makes the scheduling much more difficult.

      If you want to see what it's like when religion is banned go to basically any middle eastern country (not france lmfao) where only islam is allowed... stop whining just because people don't want religion and the law intertwined, what gives you the right to have special treatment just because you worship one particular god?
      Should people be allowed to say they wont work over christmas because they're christian, for example? I'm sure all the people in ICUs who rely on people keeping them alive would LOVE that! Perhaps it would be better if people are all treated the same, and we all have equality?

      Jewish law says you aren't supposed to do work on holidays, just like on the Sabbath. Taking an exam counts as work. It isn't that she has something else to do, it's just that she isn't supposed to be doing anything that counts as work. There are plenty of exceptions to that law, though, so I doubt she would be committing a particularly grave sin by just taking the exam.

And Professional footballers of different faiths are pretty quiet about the accommodations they make, as they have to, to stay at peak fitness.
