Politicians in this country need to have a listen to this and correct the disgrace of not allowing people self determination over their own lives. This man shouldn't have to spend a second of his life worrying about this. He's having to consider torturing himself with a hideous disease to protect his wife's future. That is wrong on every single level.
In Holland they "euthanized" (read injected poison) into a 19 year old because of the trauma over being sexually abused as a young girl. Should rape victims be offered death if they ask for it? Or dose only physical illness make you "life unworthy of life"? You want to give the state that power? There is no right to die only the state's right to kill.

We had a Pension Insurance; the Life Insurance we'd taken out ran to the age 70yrs only and Andrew coincidently was 70 when he died. The lawyer is wrong ....NO UK Dr is going to give you the okay to go to Dignitas. My advice is DO NOT discuss this with your Dr if you don't want hassle. We had a Pension Insurance, the Life insurance we'd taken out ran to the age 70yrs only and Andrew coincidently was 70 when he died. There is enough natural grief and sadness without the added burden of watching that loved one dying badly. We must have this choice ........it should be our human right, if we so wish, to die a civilised death in the UK. That it is NOT just we, who are lucky enough, savvy enough, rich enough and ‘well’ enough who are able to flee to Switzerland. On the 28th April 2017 my husband AndrewTyler died at Dignitas. On the 17th November 2017 my close friend Annie died at Dignitas. I was with Andrew holding his hand as he died. The attendants were wonderful and the Dr, who examined Andrew's medical reports and wrote out the prescription, could not have been kinder. I wish to thank, from the bottom of my heart, Ludwig Minelli for founding Dignitas, but also the Swiss people for allowing foreigners to come to their country to end their lives in such a civilised manner. There was a referendum in Swiss, in which the people were asked : should assisted deaths to be allowed to carry on and, more importantly for us foreigners, should people from abroad be allowed to carry on coming to die in their country. The answer was YES to both. Now that is what I call a civilised and caring peoples. I am so ashamed my own UK Government which is so feeble/pathetic/ powerless against the powerful lobby groups within the Medical Establishment and Church who oppose an assisted death.
Being able to have a choice is vital when seriously ill to the point of no chance of recovering. The why I see it is this...If an animal is suffering with no chance of recovery its considered to be kinder to end their suffering. A lot of pet owners are faced with this dilemma but have more support than a human does in similar circumstances. The laws and red tape needs to change.
So we have 70 million people in this country so to claim most people that would assume more than 50% so have you spoken to 35 million people in the UK to ask that question that you state most don't want assisted suicide to be made legal? Im bawling crying now. Not for your husbands death but for the kindness you and he were alalowwd to have your last days togefher when he was well enough to know who he was and who you were and to die consciously. It is civilised and kind. And to force somone to suffer when we all will die and dying is not a bad thing just an inevitable thing we all must do but suffering is not. We do not let cats and dogs suffer because we know it is cruel and that death is naturally coming and thefore we want them to run for the ball and be happy wagging their tails when we say goodbye to them and not suffering and wnduring torture. We even give the death penalty to criminals rather than torture them as we used to do. It is also sad that you couldnt even risk talking about it with your doctors. Because of all the hassles they might have put you through. I read of a woman who ended up dying before she was finally grantwd permission and it was just so sad what that family went through when they could have said goodbye in a way that was peacful not so full of pain and suffering. Nobody wants to see a loved one die or to die ourselves but we will all have to ride that bus some day. Why is it somehow morally considered wrong to buy a ticket and get on the bus to we know not where with a clear mind and a sense of peace. Every old person deserves a dignified death in the same way a baby deserves a dignified birth. We used to force mothers not to have an epidural even after it was invented it was denied women. I’m 43 and have just taken our life insurance which DOES cover suicide but not in the first year. Which seems to be a sensitive concession both that in this situation my family should be covered and that they don’t want to be seen to encourage suicide for financial gain (for families). So maybe things are changing.
He would not refuse "palliative care", he would refuse further treatment surely. We would all want palliative care to ease any suffering. I would be 3xtremely wary of discusding it with a doctor. Some will not release the relevant dicuments that one needs in order to be accepted by Dignitas. If he has already got all that sorted, and a dictor who is supportive, then maybe.

Totally humbling. Gary, dying, tears up and weeps in the face of choosing between prolonging his cancerous suffering and ending his life on his own terms - knowing his insurance might force him to live out his last days in confusion and deadly agony rather than go abroad for euthanasia. Gary is living his final days in order to secure his estate for his wife and shield her from an insurance fugazi, whe his cancer choked bones crumble into him. Fucking legend of a man. What a life.
I thought that suicide was only excluded within the first 12 months of taking out the policy? For example, a person could become severely mentally ill and take their own life many years after taking out a policy; it's a legitimate illness which may have been completely unforseen at the time the policy was taken out.
I thought that too, but when I was looking for an over fifty policy it wasnt like that... Im not sure if age makes a difference or if things have changed.
That's correct and then only if that was the intention at time of taking out policy. But for this gentleman, there is a good chance that they will pay in his lifetime under the terminal illness provision. People often think insurance companies don't want to pay out, but if u look at their marketing, they often cite how much they have paid out. I would suggest he asks a financial adviser to help with this claim and also ongoing help once he has passed away
Huge respect to both Gary and Daniel in this call. To Gary for getting his affairs in order in the face of the painful reality of his fate and saving his wife from uneccessary burden so she can grieve and not worry about practicalities, and to Daniel for his immense sensitivity and emotional intelligence.
One of those where it’s ridiculous this should even be something on the guys mind during the latter days of his life. Living with chronic pain is unbelievably hard on the person and their loved ones & there is no justification for why this shouldn’t be perfectly acceptable. No. You have a right to refise medication. If insurers did that their mortgage will be fulfilled.
Most policies only exclude suicide if it happens in the first year. The caller needs to check their policy.
