  • In the eye-opening Prime Video documentary series, "Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets," Melissa Rivers engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Director Olivia Crist and Executive Producer Blye Faust. Unveiling the dark underbelly of the Institute for Basic Life Principles (ILBP), the series goes beyond the seemingly fruitful Duggar family (of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting") to expose a web of nefarious schemes. Through firsthand accounts from family members who have escaped the organization, viewers gain a rare glimpse into the cult's disturbing practices, including the suppression of women, enduring years of sexual abuse, and the alarming grooming of future generations of young men with a mission to blur the line between church and state.

I watched the Duggars for years as much as I was disturbed by the home school curriculum & the extreme patriarchy of the IBLP framework for families … all at the hands of Bill Gothard, who was never married & never had any children. The story of Josh’s abuse - over years - of his younger sisters, as well as his extramarital activities and addiction to pornography, including CP was not a secret to those who followed the show, & most definitely, not to TLC. I firmly believe that TLC was complicit in giving the Duggars this platform for as long as they did, knowing about the abuse, that the kids weren’t ever paid until Jill took legal action years later, & even that contracts were being signed by Michelle & Jim Bob for some of their adult children long after they were legally adults. TLC wanted to keep the cash cow that was the whole Duggar empire, no matter what that cost in suffering for so many, as countless people joined the IBLP because of the Duggars. A number of families even uprooted & moved to Northwest Arkansas. Why did TLC choose to turn a blind eye? It seems as if the media is dancing around implicating TLC in all of this and I think that’s wrong . It’s obvious why TLC kept going w/ the show if you also look at a # of other shows TLC has &, in some cases, continues to produce, notably Welcome to Plathville & Sister Wives. Just look at what has come out about those shows in the last couple of years & how TLC covered up other abuses & toxic environments for women and kids, including violations of child labor laws. While not exactly the same as the Duggars, there are many parallels underneath.
I won’t watch TLC anymore because of what has come out & I made that choice over a year ago. All of the women & kids involved deserved so much more than they got from TLC when it came to the truth, but money was clearly more important than protecting kids. It’s despicable, imo, & my heart goes out to all victims of this cult & others like it out there, especially Jill Duggar Dillard, for being so courageous in taking the veil off this “shiny happy family.” Great name for the documentary, btw. .

I also used to think that some day one of those kids will write a tell all book. The reason I said they were strange is because unlike a normal family the kids always either got along or never complained about helping out. Normally there is resistance from time to time. Also the way Michelle would dress her daughters and the girls never wore pants.
Well, I know much more than I knew back then and I find it so sad because the parents were in full denial and enabled that oldest kid.

During Josh’s trial last year, there was an attempt to drag the Bate’s in to his crimes just because Carlin was texting him about a car she was interested in. The low’s Joh Duggar & his parents were willing to go to try & get him acquired is sickening, when everyone knows how guilty he is.

I binge-watched the entire 4 episodes back to back as well, and I thought it was extremely well done. My only complaint is that they used Jim Holt when it has been known in this fundie community, that he was abusive in many ways. Since this filming, his wife, and at least one of his children filed a restraining order against him. Did the producers not know about this beforehand?
One of the UA-cam channels I follow who has covered the Duggars for years, Without a Crystal Ball w/ 335K subscribers, said that she was contacted by Amazon to possibly participate in the series but chose not to because of her concern about Jim Holt being included, & that she warned them about him, but they proceeded anyway. Not sure if that’s the whole story but that’s what I’ve heard.

The documentary because Jim holt was involved or the other lie she tried that Jim didn’t want her involved . She actually wasn’t used for the doc because when they vetted her they saw how many lies she has told and how problematic she is . Also the fact that she has been involved in many lawsuits for decimation. She is currently involved in a lawsuit. Please research her before watching . Check woacb vs woacb . They use her own words to tell how I often she lies. She also has a subredit dedicated to her and you can see how many lies she told and how many have been hurt . She is also deleting comments from actual ibpl survivors. She has said horrible things about the Duggar girls an even had a sponsor dump Jessa . The vast majority of what she reports is made up or garnered from redit. She has said so many times she was involved in various documentaries and even the dr Phil show. However this is been shown not to be the case as she hasn’t been invoked in anything but making things up this far.

15:32 Unfortunately, people like the Duggars perpetuate the outdated stereotype of homeschoolers. While there are still people like that, the vast majority of homeschoolers now are not. Homeschooling is gaining momentum because of the broken public school system and deficit of decent teachers. So parents are taking action and responsibility for their own children's education no matter what socioeconomic, political, racial, religious, etc backgrounds. Homeschooling these days crosses all boundaries and have all types of people doing it for all types of reasons.
I don't like having the misrepresentation of homeschoolers being this one type like the Duggars portray. Absolutely not true.
There are so many students that excel and get a proper education in homeschooling and get accepted into prominent colleges and universities. The majority of parents that homeschool are getting the job done and providing many more opportunities for their kids well above and beyond the public school system. There is oversight and accountability in the majority of states. Very few areas are unchecked like the Duggars.

The most deadly combination is these fundamental teachings and a sick parent = emotional, mental, psychological, spiritual and sometimes death to the children. I now have zero contact and no family. Melissa, ‘rape’ is not only physical - i was raped spiritually, mentally, emotionally etc - into five decades. We don’t understand we can get out - we live daily with the belief of burning in hell, and we never ever go against our abuser, who we are brought up to believe is God - in our eyes. She is a member of Grace Community Church in California, where her husband, Jeremy, is a pastor, & there are all kinds of controversies with that church, much involving abusing women & children. Many people feel she traded one cult for another.
Jill’s book will be published in January, 2024, & will be much more of a tell-all. It took her years to get to an emotional place where she could speak out, & I applaud her. Jim Bob didn’t pay her as a child or as an adult, & she does have a right to make money off her story. I don’t think that’s the primary reason she’s doing it though. I think it’s more for her own healing as she is the only Duggar offspring who has been in professional therapy/counseling to address her trauma.
