Hey Eric, how much does pattern recognition play into seeing tactics (especially one or two move blunders) as opposed to the habit of constantly searching for forcing moves?
For instance some patterns are very visual eg smothered mate setups but other tactics are not so visual yet you will spot them in a second while it takes me several minutes to find the same tactic if at all.

For context I'm about 2000-2100 chesscom blitz so if you're about that strength perhaps my 2 cents aren't as helpful. In any case, in blitz at my level I'd say that pattern recognition plays a very important part. When you look at the board you'll note things like "there's a fork here if the knight moves" and you see that quickly because you're familiar with the piece placements that allow forks. Then you keep that in the back of your mind and try to make it happen if you can, and if you can't you just wait to see if your opponent allows it. In any game you'll maybe see a few different things like this and this is what allows you to respond quickly.
In addition to that you just become familiar with motifs from playing all the time so you just get a "gut feeling" for certain moves before you've even had a chance to calculate. For example, you might see that sacrificing your rook for their knight stands out as an opportunity for an attack because it opens up their king, none of their other pieces are around to defend and all yours are ready to come into play. These are all things you develop an instinct for, or perhaps just pattern recognition of - depending on how you look at it.
