Joe Alston was a Channel 5 triple threat. He was Captain Gus every weekday afternoon AND he, did the spooky voiceover for aProject Terror every Friday night at 10:30 AND he was also the undertaker lead in for 5 Star Shock, which like Project Terror featured schlocky Z-grade Hollywood horror movies. It came on at 3:00 on Saturday afternoons. Around 1967 or so, it was cancelled and replaced with Mr. Moto movies, Charlie Chan (with Sydney Tolar and Warner Orland both in the title role). They’d also play Shirley Temple and Abbott and Costello flicks too. Then those movies were replaced with/by my boredom. I learned to ride a bike and play outside. Charlie Chan and Jimmy, his Number One son had to solve crimes without me.
Anyone remember when that kid was making a handsign? Gus asked, "What's that.. a little sign or something?" The kid said, "It's a flying asshole." My brothers and I still give each other that sign to this day.
My Dad used to work for KENS back when I was around that age. Was also part of the kids audience. Will never forget when they were in between tapings...Capt Gus sitting next to one of the hugs honking cameras picking his nose. Funny how those memories stick with you through adulthood.
I remember back in the early '60s having an argument with my brother about telling Cap'n Gus our ages! I was the oldest (I was 4 and my brother was 3) but my younger brother said he,was going to say that he was the oldest. We never got to be on the damn show......
One of Captain Gus's stock phrases was "the whole McClew", similar in meaning to the more common "the whole shebang". I grew up watching the show in Seguin, where reception was a bit spotty, and believed far too long that his phrases were somewhat standard. Eventually I learned otherwise.
this is too new. where's his boat? ol'joe alston (wasn't it?). cap'n gus taught us to excuse yourself when you had to cross in front of others. it was all over by time they brought "first mate, mortimer" around.
Hello, you and I corresponded shortly after you uploaded this video. I had inquired about you being able to upload the entire show with commercials too. Is this something you can do?
Do you suppose some of them sit around the house for hours in the morning, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes? They all look so well-scrubbed and on their best behavior.
The scouts on Uncle Gus🇺🇸👍 Our troop was there but I forgot the year? 1974??? When people Respected the Sanctity of the Scouts. Pre leftist meddling. Disgusting what happened to American scouts.😳🇺🇸
Such wonderful memories
OMG...I was on this show twice...once with my cousin and once with my brownie troop...Ba Ding Bing

I was 9 years old in 1976. Seems like one day I just woke up 56 years old.

What memories
I was on uncle gus in 1964 I do believe
Hey I think I was on the show too that year. I was in a Brownie troop 😊
And the theme song from the Cap'N Gus Show was a hit 1976 song from The Andrea True Connection called More More More right?!
Does kens5 have all the episodes because I was on that show
Me too! I wish I could find the one that my cousin and I were on. We still quote a certain statement I made during him interviewing us. Funny times!
@@robertalva1166Same!
Ba ding bing!
Noe Berengena... yes! 😃
Today he would be accused of child molestation and be sued.
I was just thinking the same thing...
Big Bubba you’re not my uncle either so what’s your excuse for being one?
