Never forget the excitement as a kid when a scenicruiser pulled into the Greensboro, NC bus station for another ride to Richmond, VA circa late 50's to early 60's. Absolutely nothing cooler!!!
Beautiful buses. I love the look of the buses. To me it is classic. I'm glad and happy that they are still around. When I was 7 years old in 1956 I went on one of those scenicruisers from Miami, Fl. to Fort Wayne, Ind.
I can't speak to converting to a tour bus, but my first Scenicruiser ride was in 2010 and it was 2200 miles round trip. It was the smoothest, most relaxing ride I've had in any vehicle ever!
back in the 60s my uncle drove a scenic cruiser for grayhound on the al-can hiway . back then it was mostly a dirt road. My aunt was the hostess on the bus. I remember my uncle telling me about it.He had fond memories about those days and he really loved those buses.
Never been on a Scenic Cruiser but I know many large trucks and buses back before the 1970's used torsion rod suspension. Though I have no experience in trucking with torsion rod suspensions, I've heard from older drivers that they rode real smooth. All the Eagles had torsion rod's. The oldest bus I've ever rode in was the popular 1956 GMC Citybus's that most cities had when I was a boy. The only bus ever drove was the old MCI's and it was okay but not like the buses today.
They originally came with 2 4 cylinder diesels joined together via fluid coupling which had problems. Those were all pulled in 1961 and replaced with the 8V71. Go to Yahoo Groups, search for Scenicruiser and you'll find a community there.
An 8V71 Detroit Diesel (V8, each cylinder 71 cubic inches - 568 CI total). Look for another of my postings called Scenicruiser Detroit Diesel Music to hear it running.
It's been quite awhile. But is the scenicruiser ride as smooth as some busses are today? Put another way, would an attempt to convert to a tour bus be realistic?
These Old "1/2 So-Called Double Decks Old Model GREYHOUNDS", were the thangs back days; Then came "CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS introduced their "ROAD MASTER EAGLE BUSES:> "GOLDEN EAGLE and SILVER EAGLES BUSES", Everybody were sitting on the Upper Level and The Bus Operator was sitting on the Lower Level. Their wasn't nothing that could top a:> CONTINENTAL TRAILWAYS EAGLE BUS.....! They Were The ROAD MASTERS For CROSS COUNTRY BUS TRAVEL Anytime.
+Lankster Price Mpg is typically 5-9 on these 8V71 coaches. Costs will vary depending on what needs to be done; a set of new tires will run you $2K and up, the two batteries are about $500 and on it goes...
+paulmontry TY... I was thinking it was about 7 mpg. Running cost at 30 to 75 cents a mile. Just matters on how you figure in all the little stuff.. Ive been looking but its rear to even find one.. What did you pay for your gem if you dont mine saying... I would like to have a starting point on where I should be for a classic. ty much for your time.
Your memory is good - they were relabeled as Super Scenicruisers to distinguish them from the single level coaches that were part of what Greyhound called Scenicruiser Service.
Yes I'm machines lover... No I don't find anything exciting about this specific bus. If you people really want to know the best and made with love buses. You should see hino's nishi nippon buses from Japan. Especially models from 80's to 90's.luxurios beautiful interiors as well and with so many different styles
My boss year's ago bought three supers and rebuilt two I drove them on tours all over great handling coaches

1970년대 전국 고속도로를 달리던
고속버스 (그레이 하운드). 반갑습니다 👍🇰🇷
When they were first made, the bus actually had 2 motors. but there were problems keeping them in sync, so they opted for the 8v71
Man Greyhound does have excellent service... a bus every thirty seconds..
what music is this???
its great!

I fell in love with the all black Scenicrusier.
It's a handsome coach. But what I'd like to know is what kind of a ride, smooth or rough, should you want to convert to a tour bus?
Great vid, boing, boing, boing.. love the Bus's.. boing boing...

Amen. It took just my first trip on a Silver Eagle to destroy my taste for Greyhound and nickname the Silver Eagle the Spoiler.
Whats it cost to run a older bus like this....
What sort mpg you getting?

+Lankster Price It's not my Scenicruiser. One place to check is here: www.scenicruising.com/#!scenicruisers-for-sale/rdqox
It is like a big yacht, if you gotta ask the price you can't afford it.
toujours aussi beau ces bus !!! cela rappel les film des années 70 ....
Please look under jumbo scenicruisers and you'll get an answer to your question.
is my memory bad I thought I rode one called a Super Scenicruiser in 1965?
Your memory is good - they were relabeled as Super Scenicruisers to distinguish them from the single level coaches that were part of what Greyhound called Scenicruiser Service.
Are there any Scenicruisers in Mexico??
Brasil tem tres Flxibles dos trinta importados em 1955
definitely these buses have more room of eny comercial air line.
So, then, they wouldn't make great tour buses, after all?
Going into those small towns, people might think you are civil rights activists arriving, expecting Al Sharpton to pop out of the bus.

Good question
so cool
felicitaciones excelentes buses =)
These busses make their own beautiful music from the Detroit diesel. Why ruin that with corny royalty free music?
LetGo
Si.
It takes all kinds...
