@@LoveMTB Good day. I bought a bike with a SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain (GT sensor comp 2020). Can I change only the rear derailleur for Sram REAR GX EAGLE 12S 52T without changing everything (cassette, chain, shifter, etc.)? or advise an analogue from shimano. thanks for the answer.
Thank you for testing supposedly "incompatible" combinations and enlightening us on your findings. These videos are very useful even for us the road- and gravel- bike aficionados, who aren't that much into mountain biking.
The 42-50 gap was almost a bail out gear. It definitely is with the 10 tooth difference with the 52 tooth granny. Shimano got it right with their 10-51 cassette.
You do realize saying "52 is granny/bailout" and "51 is right" sounds kinda silly when the difference is literally imperceivable at just 2% difference. This sounds more like fanboyism.
@@GFClocked It's the gap between the 40 and 52 tooth that is the issue. The 45 to 51 tooth on the Shimano gives much better progression on the low end than the Sram does. And you're correct, the one tooth difference between the two is negligible. Sram just wanted to have a wider gear range but they ignored the massive jump between the two lowest gears.
@@iancanuckistan2244 oh yeah. The step downs in gearing is silly. I could bet money sram is going to update their cassettes to be more evenly spaced out. Everyone is gonna lose it when it happens. Although shimano can't even get derailleurs that don't rub their cables on metal holes so...
I would like more options with a 9T cog like what e-thirteen does. So many frames only have 32T or 34T clearance for the chainring and I feel like a 32-10 is barely sufficient. Larger chainring clearances usually mean longer chainstays or less tire clearance which is a compromise I wouldn't want to make if I can avoid it.

@@LoveMTB Hi my friend. I have a question: the gap between 42t and 52t cogs seems bad, but we see great professional bikers using that system. This gap is really bad??? I think shimano’s cassete is better, but the Sram 10-52 is not a really bad cassete. What do you think?
@@LoveMTB understood. My question is about I consider to buy a bike with Sram GX 10-52 or shimano m7100/8100. I would like use that 10-52 GX, it seems more strong than the other GX model (GX eagle that many people say broke). But the bike I want here in Brazil presented in options Sram/Shimano. @@LoveMTB the bike that I looking shimano m8100 more expensive (170 USD (R$ 1.000) converted more or less) than with Sram GX. Suspension is the same (rock shox recon) for the both. That same bike with shimano m7100 is a little more cheap than bike with Sram GX. Thank you for the help!!!
Thank you. I've been thinking of putting XT/XTR onto my bike, which has XD freehub for the eagle cassette. My local bike shop was not keen on the idea, but as you've shown, it works and I get to use a XT/XTR shifter which I prefer over the Sram shifter. Result - you're the best - thanks
best derailer GX 2021 , best casette 10-52 GX, but chain shoud be XX1 gold , and then you get amazing shifting performance, quiet and smooth, and this is te best MTB chanel ever....
The range extensions stated by Sram are correct! in fact for 10-52 cassette the range is correct 520% for 10-50 cassette and 500%. It's easy to understand and verify, just multiply 10 teeth cog by 5 times (equal to 500%) and you'll find the big cog of 50 teeth, and the same for the new 10-52 you can just multiply by 5.2 times (equal to 520%) and you'll obtain the big cog of 52 teeth. so the range of the cassette has been extended by 20%. You are confusing the increase in the number of teeth of the biggest cog from 50 teeth to 52 teeth that increased by 4% with the increase of the cassette range that actually increased by 20%.
I bought a new bike with a Sram NX drivetrain. It was the only thing I didn't like about the bike. I swapped it out for an XT derailleur, XT Chain, XT shifter, Wolftooth Drop stop oval chainring, and a Garbaruk 11-52 cassette. What an awesome combination, shifts are buttery smooth and I can backpedal all day if I like. Now I just have to be on top of my drivetrain maintenance so I get maximum life from it because it cost me a small fortune.
Was wondering about my current xtr/ eagle 10-50 setup and if xtr/eagle 10-52 was a good match and know Lovemtb was the channel with the answer. Tjanks!
The 42 to 52 gap kinda remebers me about the 37-46 jump on 11 speed xt 11-46 cassettes. I gues this two giants do thouse weird gaps as a marketing race for range
I had lots of trouble with my Shimano 12x (XT), derailleur failed, poor shifting, i did send it to shimano after 2 month later still no answer. Now i changed to Sram 10-50 and it´s another world, works amazing.
Hi, I had the same problem with backpedaling (SRAM XX1 Eagle with Garbaruk 10-52 cassette). I just changed the chain to Shimano XTR and the problem disappeared 😉👍
I have the SRAM XX1 Gold 12V derailleur and i bought the 10-52T GX cassette. Now i see online that my derailleur only goes up to 50T... I guess i need to get the 10-50T now 😞
Bought 52t for my nx eagle, because people just say "oh it's interchangeable, you can put whatever" (looking at you Jeff from WC), so I was unsure if it was secretly compatible and they just want to get more $ and put superficial restrictions. But after watching this I exchanged it for the older 50t. 4% means nothing if the chain drops and ducks up my derailleur.
I watched your video after ordering my XX1 kit and was dreading dropping chains. Yet after installing and properly adjusting everything.. I cannot for the life of me drop a chain.
I also have had good luck. The only way I can get it to drop sometimes is spinning really fast by hand. Never had it happen while back peddling on a ride.
I also have had good luck. The only way I can get it to drop sometimes is spinning really fast by hand. Never had it happen while back peddling on a ride.
@@barefootbob1269 Interesting. What are your chainstay dims; I'm running a 157 SB width and a 42.93 cm chainstay length. Even on the 52t cog I can full sprint back pedal with the bike on a stand and I've never dropped a chain.
Installed a Shimano XTR 10 - 51 cassette on my Sram x01 derailleur and shifter a good solution to the 42 to 52 spacing and runs smooth as it should be.
I have been on SRAM since 2x10, xx1, x01 Eagle. It took awhile for Shimano to compete, but now they CRUSH SRAM. I have moved all my bikes to Shimano xt or xtr, 4 bikes total. Also Shimano is much more affordable to replace components.
I first had xtr on my Xc bike and was impressed with how light the shifting was, the force required is next to nothing. Sans axs, all of SRAM shifters feel chunky compared to Shimano. then after racing, I was hooked to the 2x down shift and thumb or index finger down shift (I ride with my thumbs above my grips during marathon races to keep my hands from going numb, and having index shifting is really nice). I have also been impressed with the hyper glide+ on the chain and cassette that allows me to shift under power & aggressive sprints. It really is so much better than SRAM. I do miss a locking clutch, but Shimano‘s clutch while riding is noticeably quieter and holds the chain really well, without causing heavy shifting like SRAM can have. do you prefer SRAM cassette on Shimano drivetrain?
Oh and totally agree with you about new 52t cog. What a marketing joke, do they think mtbers are stupid? Roadies would never allow that kind of spread, it’s insane. It’s over 10% jump in size. I love how Shimano has much more useable cogs for climbing and you aren’t just forced to a final bail out cog.
Love your videos as always. I most definitely saw it coming when you tried the 52 cassette with the old rd. Cheeky marketing move for Sram and childish competition against Shimano on that 1 extra tooth: Sram cassette are very good and superior in design but jump between the gears is better on Shimano. Keep ut the good work, mate
I have been using the GX 520% cassette on GX AXS RD for 6 months. For some reason it never shifted as smooth as my mechanical GX 500%. It made ticking noises, loud shifts particular when going to the largest cog. It never shifted as good as my mechanical GX 500%. So at first I thought it might be my AXS RD. Yesterday I swapped out the GX 520% cassette for an XX1 500% cassette on the GX AXS and it made a world of a difference. It shifts buttery smooth on every gear even under load. So do you think this has to do with 1)better quality XX1 cassette, 2)500% just works better, or 3)a bit of both?
@@LoveMTB thanks for the fast reply ! Just find your channel and you got me in lol One more question, do you think there will be the back pedal chain drop issue ? Cheers from Portugal
Amazing video again, thanks! I sold my bike with the gx 12 speed and I didn't have any chain dropping issues. The setup was working perfectly but a real pain to adjust with the oval chainring in front. I had to make sure that none of the teeth would not go under the adjusting line in the tool. I had a lot of play in hanger though, but not when the chain was tensioned by the clutch. Likewise, I'm looking for a new setup for my fatbike. I think I'll stay in the Eagle system because I have trained myself to be an expert level in adjusting Eagle. In my old bike the first GX cassette was broken in less than 500km range and Sram send me a replacement. What do you think about going GX cassette and xx* chain? The chain is much better quality and maybe not "eating" the cassette so much.
I've got a 2019 Kona process 153 CR. My local shop was guessing the 520% worked on my 500% component group, but it does not. As Sram says, only the derailleur is backwards compatible, not the cassette. I've adjusted the B screw per instructions and tried a little more and less gap, but regardless, the chain repeatedly rolls down the cassette even with just a half backwards pedal stroke. Stick with the 500% on your group set or buy both the derailleur and the cassette, otherwise its just a hassle getting off your bike to reset the chain all the time.
@@aricpisa9479 He's saying that the 10-52 drops the chain even with the new derailleur. That problem has more to do with chainstay length and chainline.
The the larger cog the more likely you can wreck your derailleur under the right conditions. Back pedaling on the largest cog is problematic due to chain angle no matter the size. Always keep this in mind when riding. Plan your upshifts so you dont get stuck or break your bike. You should not shift under a heavy load. I tell this to anyone new to the biking world.
@@LoveMTB So many ifs. LOL. If you happen to be in the top gear, know if you have to back pedal you got at most a 1/2 turn. If the drive train is anything other than freshly tuned this will likely always be the case sadly. I have been in the same issue you described many times. I get mad at my self for not getting the momentum before hand and/or being in the right gear.
@@LoveMTB You may need to add one more link if it doesn't hurt your small gears b gab. That will reduce the angle and tension on the tall cog. It should reduce the back pedal chain drop a touch.
What happens if you don't torque the cassette? I've always just tightened it to snug with no issues. I don't need a chain whip to remove it in that case.
Hi...........I have a full sus mtb running the XG 1275 10-52 cassette with X01 mech and shifter. The cassette needs to be changed but here in the UK there is absolutely no stock. There is stock however of the XG 1275 10-50. Is it just a straight swop with a bit of B stop adjustment?
I have no idea what to with that 52 tooth extra ring. When racing and riders on front of you get off the bike when climbing, I wont be able to stay on the bike because I have bigger gear range. I hope that 11s 10-42 is available for years and years to come!
I have the 520% gx groupset on my Trek Fuel. Back pedaling in the lowest gear, the chain doesn't roll off at all, I tried it after seeing this video the first time. I think this could be one of the reasons why SRAM says the old gx derailer is not compatible with the 520%. So demonstrating it with the wrong component for the job is not fair.
There is a lot of misinformation in these comments. People are struggling chain drops but not using new chains or sizing them correctly. I'm surprised this video was made without the specific RD required for this cassette. SRAM was explicit in saying the old gen of mechanical RDs will not work with the 10-52t. The AXS is the only RD that doesn't require a replacement.
I installed a complete X01 drivetrain today, and I must say that "Lunar" looks awful IRL, as this colour doesn't suit anything. The black+Lunar cassette shown in the video here looks really cheap btw. I might add that, based on my experience with 12 speed SRAM so far, I'm certain that I'll never switch to 12 speed on my personal bikes.
Love your videos as always! My chain has been skipping around cogs and after a ton of troubleshooting I took it to my shop and their diagnosis was a worn out cassette (ethirteen 9-46). It’s a very reasonable explanation, so I bought a 11 speed Nx cassette 11-42 (all I could find for rush delivery as I’m going on an MTB trip in a few days) and have a few questions for you if you don’t mind: 1. How many miles do you expect to get out of your cassettes? I read 500-1000 mi. I bought this cassette lightly used and put 500 miles on this year of hard riding in dirty conditions. Needless to say I was a bit disappointed to have this wear out so quickly. 2. Do you find some cassettes to last longer than others? 3. Do SRAM chains work better on SRAM cassettes? 4. I’m running XTR shifter, XT derailleur and shimano XTR chain with NX cassette. Would you change anything about this config? Sorry to blast you with questions, I just respect your expertise. Cheers!
I have around 500km on mine and it still drops. After getting used to the 500% cassette where you can backpedal without thinking about it this is a major PIA with this new cassette.
@@faizonfitz4587 Its perfect most of the time, but occasionally such as putting the power down up a hill, it makes a loud noise but still shifts. The difference in cadence is pretty large when riding.
Hello mate! Does this also apply to XX1 gs. Planning to put a 52t cogs on an old derailleur (500%) XX1. Is there a big difference between the old and new derailleur in terms of shifting and performance? If not imma stick to my old derailleur and just plan to upgrade the cogs.
Would you be able to test the new cassette with the old derailleur and check where does it fail and when we need the new one? I need to replace my old GX cassette so this is good info! :D
You can still buy the 10-50 cassette, the 520% did not replace it. And my experience with shifting quality and chain drop in 52 and 42 tooth rings... The older 10-50 is a better product.
Don’t use the old derailleur with the new cassette! I tried out and gears 6-10 were not shifting good at all, constantly dropping gears. Once I switched to the new xx1 derailleur my problems went away. Maybe it could have adjusted better but as soon as I switched it over to the new derailleur the problem stopped. I would recommend buying the old 50t cassette because I haven’t noticed a difference from 50t to 52t.
will the SX derailleur work with this 10-52t cassette? My new wheelset has XD driver. I didn't want to install the full GX groupset yet. I just want to test my wheels with the SX deralleur. Will it work? Thanks!
Nice review..It works..but that gap..with that drop back pedaling...spacing counts. 2-3teeth difference is better. Ill stick with the old gx cassette. Thanks.

Can't say I'm a fan of SRAM Eagle drivetrains, after riding them on newer bikes for the last few years. @@LoveMTB Hi my friend. I have a question: the gap between 42t and 52t cogs seems bad, but we see great professional bikers using that system. This gap is really bad??? I think shimano’s cassete is better, but the Sram 10-52 is not a really bad cassete. What do you think?

best derailer GX 2021 , best casette 10-52 GX, but chain shoud be XX1 gold , and then you get amazing shifting performance, quiet and smooth, and this is te best MTB chanel ever....
Does it fix back pedaling issues?
@@LoveMTB ok you are insisting in the mistake, as explained above it's just mathematics but don't mind.
I just grabbed an all gold XX1. Looking forward to getting my new freehub for the install. Love your vids.
I know a guy that uses this on his Aethos road bike! Love the 52T bailout gear! Best to stay away from SRAM front derailleurs! ;)
Great video I was expecting this one. Thanks!
@@LoveMTB exactly, just assembly new bigger AL parts into the previous cogset. Easy improvement :)
Sram design/"engineering" always reminds me how much I love Shimano.
I had lots of trouble with my Shimano 12x (XT), derailleur failed, poor shifting, i did send it to shimano after 2 month later still no answer. Now i changed to Sram 10-50 and it´s another world, works amazing.
What exactly do you love about Shimano? They’ve been trash for about five years now.
Sram is better than shimano. CHANGE MY MIND 😁
Good video, I’m opposite. I love SRAM AXS with Shimano cassette and chain. Amazing shifting
Same here! I have it all documented - ua-cam.com/video/_V83_bMeHgQ/v-deo.html
Got mine 10-52 xx1 and shift smoothly with XX1 AXS ! Love it.
LoveMTB : yes, occasionally drops in back pedaling. But it doesn’t bother me cuz i don’t necessarily back pedal 😀
when you made the change, from 500% gx cassete to new 520% cassette did you use the same chain or you need a new one?
Need longer chain And I reviewed the 520 but ended up selling it, we're still using the 10-50T from SRAM.
That’s a great implementation of iconic “MEGA-RANGE” technology by Shimano,, it’s been here for decades now and apparently is gonna stay. 😀😉🥴

@@barefootbob1269 Interesting. What are your chainstay dims; I'm running a 157 SB width and a 42.93 cm chainstay length. Even on the 52t cog I can full sprint back pedal with the bike on a stand and I've never dropped a chain.
Oof! That 42t -> 52t step looks pretty atrocious. They'd have been much better off going with a 40t -> 46t -> 52t spacing.
@@LoveMTB but then sram couldn't re-use their old 11 speed cog stamps 🤣
Installed a Shimano XTR 10 - 51 cassette on my Sram x01 derailleur and shifter a good solution to the 42 to 52 spacing and runs smooth as it should be.
That's great news! I'm about to sell a bike that will have to use the Shimano 10-51 cassette with a GX rear derailleur and was wondering exactly this.
Test it please with new 520% rd.
Such a simple video... but soooo good!
@@LoveMTB Keep up the great work!
Ciao, a question: when using xtr derailleur which trigger are you using? Sram or shimano?😊
Should i go forward and use the 52T GX cassette with my SRAM XX1 12V Gold ?
@@LoveMTB thanks for the fast reply !
Just find your channel and you got me in lol
One more question, do you think there will be the back pedal chain drop issue ?
@@LoveMTB say that again. What are you saying?
@@aricpisa9479 He's saying that the 10-52 drops the chain even with the new derailleur. That problem has more to do with chainstay length and chainline.
What do you think about Shimano MicroSpline? Have you tested it?
Does a 1x setup increase the speed, when compared to 3x setup??
What is the backpedaling test you are doing? Is that downshifting while backpedaling?
I don't need a chain whip to remove it in that case.
have you noticed any other issues using the "old" mech with the new 10-52 cassete? Thanks
hello ther , are you able to tell me the b tension gap for the jockey wheels when running xtr and the 52 tooth?
I have the GX derailleur with the 520 % range stamped on it. Will the XG1275 10-52 tooth work?
Do you think you could have gotten away without replacing the chain? Could it have worked with the chain length used with the 50T cog?
Amazing video! I've old GX eagle shift with 11-50 cassette and NX gearshift, do you see problem upgrading cassette to 10-52t?
Hi...........I have a full sus mtb running the XG 1275 10-52 cassette with X01 mech and shifter. The cassette needs to be changed but here in the UK there is absolutely no stock. There is stock however of the XG 1275 10-50. Is it just a straight swop with a bit of B stop adjustment?
How do you know the 50t derailleur is compatible on a full suspension bike which causes chain growth?
It seems that your chainline or chainstays (may be both) are pretty god for the setup. Nice to read!
use the RD specifically for the 10-52T, you will not experience that chain drop when backpedalling..
It’s a very reasonable explanation, so I bought a 11 speed Nx cassette 11-42 (all I could find for rush delivery as I’m going on an MTB trip in a few days) and have a few questions for you if you don’t mind:
Cheers!
My axs der with boost spacing doesn't drop with 52t
I have around 500km on mine and it still drops. After getting used to the 500% cassette where you can backpedal without thinking about it this is a major PIA with this new cassette.

I would recommend buying the old 50t cassette because I haven’t noticed a difference from 50t to 52t.

did it drop when you used the new gx eagle?
Mine doesn’t drop when I’m at the biggest cassette when I do back pedaling sir.I was wondering why is your cassette like that.
@@LoveMTB I noticed it’s not only about the chainstay or the chain length it’s also about the crankset a little outward to the right sir if you can make it a little bit inward to the left of the frame it won’t drop anymore for sure. I have this problem a long time ago since I started mountain biking.and I just discovered it when I change my whole drive system to sram.
they got lasy w the redesign of the cassette, they should have made a more sensible range... instead they wanted to cut costs by keeping all the existing tooling and are marketing the huge gap as a bail out gear, wtf is the point of 12sp then
@@LoveMTB yep, thats why I bought the sunrace 11-46t instead of the shimano xt 11- 46t cogs. So Ive got the perfect xt set up for my needs...
E13. Compare that- you can start it 11speed, and grow it to 12.
LoveMTB good to know!
It's sucks i buy new eagle gx lunar drivetrain and i have this same backpedaling issue :/ I think this should never happened! Sram must resolved this issue and back money in case of damage
Enhorabuena me encantan tus vídeos.Me suscribo
