As a Welshman living in exile (married to a Scot, living in England) the Y in the place name is pronounced like “uh”; so if my memory of Welsh grammar from 40+ years ago is correct (the “uh” rolling into the last bit) it should sound like “Borth uh-guest”.
Last time I was there would be back in 1989 whilst also visiting Portmeirion - bought my then fiancée (now my wife of 32 years in just over a weeks time) her going away dress for our honeymoon in a craft shop there.
Thanks for showing such a beautiful part of my homeland.

Mel, I love your channel and always look forward to your vids. I have to voice my disappointment with the fact that you have so plainly pointed out a lady’s house like that with the disparaging comments. Imagine if it was your mum that someone did that to on UA-cam. The chances of this getting back to the lady is pretty high, and it may make her feel intimidated or vulnerable. If we want to be able to continue in this hobby, we need to be very sensitive to residents feelings and requests. It is their home, we are just visiting.

You are, of course, a naturally polite and courteous person and would probably be welcome most places. Where I live, in a south coast seaside town, we have had a bit of an influx of campers recently many of whom have left engines or generators running for several hours in the evenings - that really p*sses off local residents. North Wales is absolutely rammed with #vanlifers at the moment, so it's no surprise that patience is wearing thin. The volume of vans, and especially inconsiderate a-holes who litter, cr*p or empty their toilets in laybys is spoiling it for everyone - lots of new 'no overnight' signs; private security firms being employed to enforce the bans & spots that have been used discreetly for years being closed off. Not your fault, Mel, but that's how it is.

    • @AnomalyResearchersUK
      @AnomalyResearchersUK 3 роки тому +1

Yep.... I think we had better join Britstops soon... As you say, the volume of vans now if off the scale... There is a second hand van shortage.... 60% of vans are being converted to camper vans, so we heard recently...I'm glad we got ours when we did...(about 3 yrs ago)... the price has escalated...

I’ve been visiting north wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 to windsurf/kitesurf for over 30 odd years as an adult. I’ve had Vw campers one which I made myself and now a California. I’ve always wild camped or used local campsites. I’ve never seen so many motor homes, camper van, self builds. Loads of spots I’ve wild camped at are now gone. Signs up, barriers.
Tbh it’s spoilt it for a lot of people.I’d arrive late and leave at first light.
Tbh I can see why they’d get pissed off looking at the side of a van continually last summer and this summer. People have took the piss. They’re not bothered about anyone other than a free park up.
The thing is the minute you make a video showing a location it’s going to be overrun and the locals will be pissed off, leading the council to act and the police to enforce the bylaws.
The same thing has happened to wildcamping in the hills too.
Park discreetly, leave no trace, don’t piss the locals off. Keep the locations off UA-cam. Problem solved.

@@24k__J 😂 no need to get your knickers in a twist.
Do you not think they may have introduced the restrictions due to last summer and this summer and the amount of people taking the piss.
In case you missed my earlier point I’ve been wild camping for over 30 years ( albeit it for a purpose, arriving late at night. No campsites open)
I’ve never in 30 years over nighted outside someone’s front door like that. It’s called being discreet. Probably why I’ve never had any grief till now and the whole van life trend and let’s park up wherever we want and f?ck everyone else and then rub peoples faces in it making a video showing the locations it’s just adding to the problem. Surprise, surprise the locals are fed up with it.
Let me guess you’d loved vans constantly parked outside your house or are you a hypocrite.

As a Welsh person myself, I always find it utterly baffling how many of us seem to have the "this is a local place, for local people" mentality.
We prattle on about Wales being "god's own country", I don't see the point in bragging about the scenery to then complain when people come to look at it.
Even in Wales, North Wales has an especially bad reputation for it.
Pity really as the economy is heavily tourism reliant.
I don't understand the logic myself.
If you're doing a tour of the whole of Wales, Brecon is quite standout for its carparks allowing overnight campers among other spectacular parkups in the area

It's a myth that the economy is "heavily reliant" on tourism, and if it was, selling ice creams to visitors in the rain for three months of the year on minimum wage would hardly be an inspiring foundation for our communities, would it?
I don't think anyone was particularly 'unwelcoming' in this little story, and Mel certainly doesn't seem to have been too upset or even inconvenienced by it, though he has a knack for keeping a smile on his face whatever the circumstance. Compared to the vicious parking wars that can erupt in quiet suburbia, this sounds very much like a teddy bears' picnic.

    • @vampiric05
      @vampiric05 3 роки тому +1

@@YDysgwrAraf it's not a myth that the economy is heavily reliant on tourism, it's a myth when people say "it depends on tourism".
But it does account for nearly £2 billion yearly and nearly 40k jobs.
I lived in pembrokeshire for decades and have seen for myself how yearly tourism helps support such counties.
I mean, it is pretty unwelcoming telling someone they need to move so your son can park a similar vehicle in the same spot rather than a few feet down the road.
But my comment was more coming from his experience reminding me of my own when I've visited North Wales. I wasn't implying that 1 person being a bit of an arse was the end of the world,
It just reminds me that every time I've visited, I've encountered unreasonably high numbers of rude people, even when I was a child, simply because I was an outsider.
I have heard stories from many others who've experienced similar, it's a running theme and shameful.

One problem with a lot of seaside resorts now ban dogs on the beach, yet Donkeys are still allowed. Seems they want to turn the tourists away. The locals should stop complaining and realise the benefits of the money coming in.

Nice stopover , shame about the complaints. It never ceases to amaze me why folk who live in stunning locations complain about visitors , what did they expect when they bought into living there...same as folk who move in next to a school and complain that its too noisy...did you pass through Abersoch, beautiful beaches, I spent many years holidaying there during my youth although Ill bet its changed a lot since then

Ah they keep a welcome in the hillside but they won’t like you parking in front of their Digs . Speaking as an ex biker who spent a lot of weekends touring round wales . Not sure they will like my ex military Unimog with a basic camper set up driving through their country either . 🤣

Mel, I've tried to buy through your store a couple of times. I'd like to help out but each time I'm asked for my Amazon password but can be logged in to my own Amazon app but get directed to the separate mobile site instead. You could be missing out if that happens to others. It seems a bit odd that I'm not directed to my Amazon app but instead to the mobile version of Amazon which I never use. Just thought I'd mention it because it stops me contributing as I'd like. Once again, thanks for all the great content! I bought your econony swivel table, because I don't have a wide area to mount the Lagun style table. The top I'm using is from an old packing crate. Going to get the belt sander out and give it some welly!

Even just by using the link it should help Mel out. It may be that you need to click on Mels link while on a laptop rather than a mobile device…give it a go, let him know a few items you purchased and he can check this end of it shows up. This could be a potential issue he needs to look into, so would be super helpful to find out if this is happening to others 👍🏻🙏🏻💚

@@BigVanSmallWorld You're very welcome. I can't wait to see your next adventure! We went to St David's which beautiful (Caravan Club site). There is a certain ambiance created by the local Rooks who like to caw loudly just when you're having a well earned kip but it is a gorgeous place. Keep up the good work! and if I've not already bought the shop, I'll buy from your store, as Rachel said, from a laptop.

Thats a shame about the locals but I think this is going to get worse as I'v heard about a law thats possibly going through parliament about different councils being able to move people on and that the rules are open to interpretation from council to council. I wish things were more like France, many campsites far and wide, no trouble and cheap, this country could do with plenty of cheap aires with great facilities rather than rip off campsites over here. I was going to convert my van but decided to sell it after the DVLA changed their requirements (I think there was an agenda in their decision to do that🤔) might move to France instead, good weather and camper friendly🤔😂
