  • This year we made our first ever visit to the small coastal village of Borth y Gest near Porthmadog in North Wales and absolutely fell in love! It is a gem of a place, it has everything we adore in life, including mountains, the sea, wildlife (sea birds especially) and wildflowers, locally brewed real ale on tap just a short walk away in Porthmadog, and not forgetting the steam railways (which will be the subject of another video.) We stayed in a tiny terraced house just above the harbour. It was late October and the weather was very kind to us!
During our stay we walked for miles along the Coast Path - you don't really need a car in Borth y Gest. (The nearest shops are in Porthmadog but that is just a 20 minute walk away beyond the boatyards - there are also regular buses). We particularly enjoyed exploring the many sandy coves and rocky inlets beside the Dwyryd estuary which sweeps past Ynys Cyngar and into Cardigan Bay at The Powder House (where explosives were stored in times gone by). Here we found the vast beach which is Black Rock Sands with views all the way to Criccieth Castle on the Llŷn Peninsula.
One day we walked up the mini "mountain" behind Borth y Gest known as Moel y Gest (263 metres / 863 feet) for some fantastic views in all directions, including back down to the village of Borth y Gest nestled at the side of the estuary. We could see the real mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) inland, all along the Llŷn Peninsula, and south to Harlech Castle and the Rhinogydd mountain range beyond.
Besides visits to Y Awstralia (The Australia) pub run by the Purple Moose brewery in Porthmadog, we also had a fascinating trip to the Maritime Museum where we learnt more about the industrial history of this area where shipbuilding led the way for many years. Borth y Gest played a key role here as it grew up around a shipbuilding yard and was home for pilots who directed ships into the harbour through the treacherous waters. Slate mined in the hills above Porthmadog was shipped across the world from here.

Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, most Welsh locals can't afford to live here anymore due to the amount of middle class English people that have bought the houses there.
