I know this is an old video but I just watched it a few days ago. I have one of the newer HF lights, that I got for free with a coupon, so this video inspired me to convert it to lithium ion. I started to do what you did and then remembered that I have some flat lithium ion cells. They came out of an old NEC Mobilepro 880 Windows CE device. I hardly ever used it so the battery always went dead. They are shaped like the flat camera batteries but bigger. With modification of the internal black part and the back cover, it fit in there. I also added a TP4056 charging board with a protection circuit. So glad I did it.
I don't mind the AA they last a long time, but what I do mind is the three position switch, so you can have press it twice to turn it on/off. I go in and hack it so its just on/off for the main light, the little light is useless, I just remove it.
I have several of those from hf too and have them running on 9v battery. Glad to see I'm not the only one that does this kind of stuff.
You should measure the brightness with the regular AAA battery and then with the 18650 battery, to see if theres a difference in brightness with different batteries
but they're so expensive to buy another one 😂😂😂

Neat and totally random. I have a few of these as I was planning to make a daisy chained with a custom holder and clear tub light bar. I was also thinking about using the TP4056 with protection circuits for charging. Most recently I picked up the build in holder 18650 5V UPS boost charger modules in single and double battery design. I still haven't gotten around to, though will reference this design when I do get to making if I document on YT.
Great videos on hacking the Harbor Freight FREEBIE flashlights. I have v2 flashlights and will see if I can fit them with 18650's and TP4056 chargers inside the cases.
Someone needs to do a hack.
Make the batteries easy accessible instead I having to use of stupid screws
Like snap on sides
Like gluing on magnets or making a magnetic charging port so you don't have to take it apart every time to charge.., my hack makes it so you don't need any glue, but whatever works.
Duct tape
keep two screws out and you can rotate it open and closed
No joke! That's the only bad thing about this light. I think Wal-Mart sells one just like it that has a clip-on back.
V, you have plenty space inside for tp4056 and 2.1.mm or 5.1mm charging banana port for charging. No wires sticking out. Looks and feels annoying. Always enjoy your vids. Cheers!
I thought about that but I prefer not to use TP4056 permanently attached to the battery due to phantom load. The gap is not big enough for my XT60 anyway. I, too, have things sticking out of my body and it feels annoying sometimes! :D

@@vuaeco TP4056 has 6 micro amp maximum leakage. If using 1.5AH battery, it'd take 250,000 hours (about 30 years). Battery leakage is probably lot higher. What could be sticking out of your body? Arms? Fingers?
6uA leakage is on paper and it's for the chip only, not the entire circuit. I also want to use the battery on discharge mode to charge a phone, for example. You can't do that with an enclosed TP4056 attached. It's more versatile for me. But I guess it's just personal preference whether or not you want the board built in.

There's room inside. You just have to cut out the plastic case.
The next upgrade needs to be a USB charging port, to eliminate the pig-tail charging connection.
Nice idea. Will try it with mine. Probably good to add an over-discharge chip to the battery. I don’t think there is one build in.
Great hack. Please tell me, what is the value and wattage of the resister it has. I want to use a torch body that does use 3 AAA's, but i want to convert to 18650 batt. The circuitry is faulty in the old torch.
A new 3D printed back would be good.
Why not place the charging board into the housing?
I had considered this and was thinking if I had a 3d printer (or a good buddy with one, lol) you could remake the back cover so that it is just a printed piece instead of cutting. Would help keep it fluid resistant.

A 18650 is 4.2v but 3 AAA is 4.5v
This is a very clever hack. Would it be wise to put a bms protection board to avoid over discharging the cell?
I'd like to see a v3. Another fella modded this new light combining three COBs into one light. I'd like to see you combine your battery mod with Catus Maximus's multi COB mod, but instead of three COBs go with five! Mount them side by side directly to the clear lens cover and trash the reflector. Perhaps the case will fit back together with no filler? 16650 is great for this and should be a perfect fit because it's 2mm thinner.

Anyone know the max current for these COB LEDs? I have been trying to figure this out. I use a coupon every time I go to HF, so I have close to 30 of these things. I'm trying to hook them up to Arduino, but without knowing the max current, I'm afraid to experiment too much and blow my board.

Yes you can. You just need to cut out the reflector which is made of plastic.
Watch this ua-cam.com/video/dBeBl-kAgII/v-deo.html . Catus ponders junking the reflector altogether, mounting the COBs directly to the lens.

Not true, lux measures the amount of light hitting the sensor area and the new one has a concentrated LED strip for it to almost all hit the sensor whereas the other one has multiple spread out bulbs with a lot that will miss the sensor or be further away too. And even a tiny distance of a millimeter makes a difference, try it moving that much and you'll see the lux jump up by anywhere from 1-4000!
What's not true? That's why I did put it right on the sensor, mate. Did you watch the video? This is not a scientific test anyway, just a rough test for a rough comparison.
Would these work for trunk lights in the car? Wired in permanent? Would you need to step voltage down?
You need to step the voltage down to 4V DC. But it'll be great for the trunk as the magnet would stick well on it.

I doubt that it would stay attached to the metal of the truck (assuming a steel trunk lid) for very long if you were driving since the magnet on most of the ones that I've encountered are not very strong... I put one on a freezer and watched it slide down the refrigerator over about 30 seconds....
And there are some cars that are using aluminum these days on the body panels to save weight to reduce their fuel consumption... Aluminum and some stainless steel alloys are not magnetic...
If someone is going to be installing it with a 12V power supply, they might as well install 3 of them in series instead of using a voltage drop / current limiting resistor...
Nice hack, can you put 12v on this led light, I'm thinking this would be great for my old truck cab that dosen't have lights inside, I would have to hardwire it.
Good question. Unfortunately, this is only 4V so you will need to have 3 of these in series if you want to run it on your truck. It's kind of tricky on a vehicle though because when your truck engine is on, your battery is actually 14.5V, not 12V so it might damage the LED due to over voltage.
You could add a step down module to lower the voltage from 12v to 4.5v. I got a few from wish for cheap but they sell them on amazon too.

If that Nikko toy uses NiMH then it might work. Charging parameters between NiCad and NiMH are similar. You can also convert your NiCad pack into a 2S Li-ion.

@@stevemcgowan3017 7.2V NiCad is 6S pack. That's a norminal voltage. At full charge they are 1.5V each so the pack of 6S is about 9V at full charge. You'll need something higher than 9V to charge it, not 7 or 8V. So 11V charger is about right because under load, it's less than that.

Can you pls tell me how much voltage a single 18650 put out? 3 AAA is about 4.5v altogether, right? Is one 18650 sufficient and safe to the switch of that portable LED, the switch won’t get hot? Thanks
