    I just got the 480mm Makita XGT 40v mower kit last Friday. Mowed 4 lawns since. I absolutely love this commercial mower. With such a small rear exit chute it never clogged at all. Really compacts the bag to the brim. I am glad I took your advice and got the smaller mower. The extra RPM makes a clear difference. Got two 8ah batteries on top of the two 5ah's. I never got closes to using two 8 ahs. Used auto 90 percent of the time while i figure out run times. 1 lawn that i did has a 2x10m tall dense strip of Kikuya. My 140cc would bog hard but this Makita ramps up and barely drops RPMs. Self propel is really intuitive. Thought it would be too twitchy but it's not. Massive ball bearing wheels make it easy to push. I got the 4 swing back blades. Low RPMs will bag grass in the deck with ease. If you want to pick up all debris below the blades leave it at max RPM.
    Can't recommend this e-mower enough. Thanks Tools & Stuff for your review.

      I reside in Michigan. I'm debating on going with the Makita GML01PL with the two 8ah batteries. I currently use a Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission. It cuts like a dream, and it sucks all my plant clippings up, leaves zero clumps etc etc. Like I've, vacuumed my lawn essentially. I also have large oaks and maples that drop basketball sized leaves in the fall that I use my Honda in the fall to suck them up or mulch them. Are there any issues with it or difficult to clean the underside carriage warranty repairs, etc?

      @@shanew7361 Yes, go with the 8ah and a dual charger. My GML01SM came with the 4ah and single charger, and I ended up buying another battery. I also replaced my blade with the Makita High lift blade, and it really improved the cut and lift. The mower has great power and should do well sucking up the leaves. It doesn’t have the dual blades like the Honda, but the mower does a good job mulching. I actually find maneuvering the Makita so much easier because the mower is so much lighter than the Honda HRX217. Even with self propel, the Honda wore me out on a hot day. I sometimes push and pull the Makita without the self propel, but my Honda is too heavy for that. Even if you want to keep the Honda as a spare and for fall leaf-duty, that’s also an option.👍🏼 good luck!

    hi, the "swing away" blades or flail blades are better for 2 reasons, 1) if you hit something (e.g. rock) it won't transfer the impact to the crankshaft. i had a bend crank from using the straight blade and 2) if the flail hits your foot (you wearing steelcaps) it will not injure as much. i think most lawns nowadays could easily be mowed with a single 4Ah battery.

      I hit a 2x2 cm square metal tube with mine 2x18V 460mm makita and it chopped it up, I was so furious I fucked up my new mower (as I did with gasoline ones), but it was completely fine! And that was a normal one piece blade

      @kristofpucejdl Рік тому

      @@kristofpucejdl True, but I have also used both the toro recycler and makita 18x2 mower for cutting lawns. The toro was good at self pacing and power wise but reliability wise, it barely lasted a month for us before issues popped up. The makita commercial has lasted us 6 months so far and no issues so far. We use it daily for gardening. That’s why I said the toro is more based towards homeowners.

    • @tomdayton3399

      This is so much lighter than the personal pace, so you don’t really need the self-propelled. I had a Toro personal pace AWD before I purchased this Makita. I understand what you are referring to, but releasing the bar and pushing manually without the self-propelling is simple because it is light.

    Oh man I think I have a case of buyer remorse/tool envy. I bought the Ego 52cm Select Cut 12 months ago and have been pretty happy with it but these new Makita's certainly look better than the "industry leader". It doesn't matter whether I'm mulching or bagging, when I walk backwards it seems to drop or clump the clippings whereas I didn't see any of that in this vid. Also battery life would appear phenomenal on these Makita's compared to my 56v 7.5Ah. Oh well..🤦‍♂🤷‍♂
    Plus I believe the Makita is much more expensive than the Ego?

    First run on my 480mm XGT 40V. The couch grass of my new house was 200mm high in some places. Mid winter, so pretty damp in South Aus. Looks a little thicker than your kikuya there, so I cut it quite high, will have to go lower next weekend. I'm using 2x 5Ah batteries and it took me three charges to get through 200m2. One battery gets drained while the other battery has four bars still. Not real happy with it's performance. I even tried not using self propulsion. Nothing helped. And I barely filled one catch.
    Will have to see how it runs when the grass is lower and drier.

      They are 40v tools, not 80v. It only uses 1 battery at a time and as the first one gets low it jumps to the second battery. Sometimes if the 1st battery is flat as you try and start it, it won't jump to the charged battery. I think it needs to be running to jump if you have batteries in both slots.

  • @frans_d7989
    @frans_d7989 Рік тому +2

    It would have been informative to compare the 2 x 18 Volt mowers to the 40 Volt mowers to see how they compare. From my understanding is that the 40 Volt max is just 36 Volt system. Maybe you can confirm this. I still feel that having 12 batteries in series to create 36 volts (40v max ) is asking for trouble. If one of the 12 batteries fail it becomes an expensive to replace the battery pack, on the other hand if one of the 6 batteries in an 18 volts fails it is more manageable to replace a 18v pack. So that is why I am sticking to 18/36 volt system

    • @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
      @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL  Рік тому +3

      Send me the money and I will compare it for you.
      Secondly, I assume you mean battery cells when you speak. Most Makita 18v batteries have 10 cells, some have 5, none have 6. Half of the Makita 40v (yes they are 36v nominal) have 10 cells, the others have 20. Cells are 3.6v nominal. Some 18v batteries from other companies put up to 30 cells in their batteries. So your theory is based on erroneous info.

    • @frans_d7989
      @frans_d7989 Рік тому +2

      You right should have been accurate stating the number of cells in a battery pack.
      What was pointing out here was from my past experience with lithium ion batteries, if one cell goes faulty in a battery pack, which I have had experienced a few times then the whole battery pack is stuffed. The BMS just switches off the battery. So statistically the more cells wired in series to give a higher Voltage the greater the chance it will fail. Using two 18 Volt pack in series instead of one 40 V means that if cell fails there is only lose only one cheaper 18 V battery to a much more expensive 40 V battery. It will be interesting to see how the Victor lawn mowers long term reliability holds up with an 82V battery

    Problem is that for 2x 8ah xgt batteries, it's over an eye watering £500 in the UK.

    Well i cant get past the price of batteries. They are $400 each. Also its $1800 for the kit with two 5amp batteries So if i want the 8 amp batteries for run time i have spend a extra $800 on top of the kit. If i buy the bare kit then $1000 plus $800 plus how much a charger costs. So close to $2k for it. I think i will stick to a gas mower for half the amount.

      Check online you can find the kit with 2 8.0’s for under $1000 USD right now… I’m tempted but I’m invested in the 18v line.

    I have a 18V 460mm one, love it, its definitely made for lawns, small grass, because the fucking catcher bag clogs up like crazy, dunno what dickheads design those, if you are doing taller grass, BUT if you just don't put in the bag/box whatchacallit and put a stick to hold the back flap up, you can mow through anything and super quick... if you don't mind getting grassy legs :D

    I have the Dewalt 2x18v mower and it is GARBAGE. Low torque, chews batteries and completely failed 12 months in. Dewalt said no receipt no warranty - tough shit. $350 for a new electronic controller that will probably fail just like the last one. These maktias look multitudes better.

      Wow! Not many Dewalt tools last that long. Dewalt is cheap junk some people still think is a professional brand.
