Great job conveying the science behind bonsai care for late spring/ early summer
This is how I like bonsai how to videos. Although it seems highly technical it gives a lot of explanation, its easy to understand because it contains the science and logic behind every technique that is applied.

Great video and you are just amazing. You have so much knowledge to share I wish I lived where you do because I definitely would have you as my teacher. Unfortunately, that probably will never happen. So I think I will continue to watch your videos and learn as much as I can via that method. I usually work on bonsai trees on my own and I find that I can manage to create something that inspires my spirit. I so appreciate what you do and how you teach. thanks so much for sharing. here for my annual re-watch. but ya know, the masculine/feminine complex....im not sure if that's true. hear me out. i might suggest that masculine would be features like angularity, tallness, asymmetric, excess negative space, Jin/Deadwood. than i may suggest that femininity would be, thickness, curvature, full branched, full foliage, symmetrical, proportionality of height to shape, flowering, fruiting, smooth barked, no-deadwood.
i say this because i think about the human form and psychology.
men are angular, taller, have reverse taper to our forms, hairyness, battle scars, the fighters and hunters of the family
women are smooth, curvy, wide hipped, full haired, nurturing, supple, ample, abundant, anchoring, rooting, sheltering
not to be crude, but if we look at the naked form of a women and a man, the eye is drawn across the figure and form in different ways for different reasons. comparatively a man might be like a tall Shokkan evergreen, with asymmetric design and featured Jin, or perhaps even like and aged literati. Woman's form would be like an earth grappling thick trunk Japanese maple with a hokidachi or miyagi type centered design. that is to imagine a bonsai stereotype for each idea. you could also think, "sexy pose" design as feminine and "radical performance posture" design as masculine.
Bravo again Ryan for explaining so very understandable all the ins and outs of the complex art form that modern-day Bonsai is! And I don't know where this is coming from but nowhere watching your videos I got the feeling that how you are teaching is a condescending way or in bad English ?! I am a self-thought English speaking Dutch guy and even I understand everything you said! You are willing to share your immense knowledge of Bonsai on the web and it is for free and then they still find a reason to complain...go figure??!! You are a teacher and an artist that I, as a teacher and artist myself am truly inspired by! So keep up the good work and you and everybody else from MIRAI have a very happy New year!!!
Would you consider wearing a white T-shirt or apron? I notice that the trees show better when in front of to the whiteboard and not so well when your black T-shirt is the background.

I saw on another lecture that Ryan said you never want to starve the tree to get what you want. That you want it at its healthiest and that will give you optimum results of what you want.
So how do I promote adult foliage in my juniper? I have a chinese juniper with alot of juvenile foliage and I have read that the best way to promote adult foliage is to with hold water and fertilizer. This is counter to what Ryan teaches from my understanding. So how can I promote adult foliage Ryans way? This would be a great help if someone answered this for me as all research yields the same answer that is to with hold nutrients.
I dont know if you read the comments but is it possible to make a video about fruit trees for bonsai, im from brazil and there is a lot of different trees here and i think that i kind of need to do bonsai about my home country, so brazilians trees haha

Thanks! Should fertilization be cut back on Shimpaku? I am in Southern California and usually fertilize till sep-oct. Am I overdoing it?

Alan Dos Anjos When my temperate trees are going into their summer elongation, my tropicals are just beginning to really do their thing. Summer is when I do any and all major work to my figs and bougies, and they never miss a beat. Keeps me busy during the summer, that's one reason I love mine.
What should the English name be for this wonderful art/craft of caring for and enjoying these 'culturally significant trees'? Add your thoughts to the project!

Would the techniques applied to the Scots Pine be applicable to a Japanese White pine, and would the timing (i.e. now) be the same. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada.
what about organic fertilizer? since the absorbtion of organic is slower, just curious if that can be backed down at a lower rate than chemical fertilizer.

While I appreciate what he's trying to do I don't like the way he keeps repeating himself over and over. Neither do I appreciate his method to embarrass the audience by talking down to them as if they were idiots. He speaks so fast in bad English that you have to watch this 20 times before you get what he's actually saying. Is this the way Master Kimura wants to have his word spread.
Your condescending teaching style is irritating. I always give up in the first minutes. Try to make it more like a presentation than like a lecture.
If you want to learn, you have to be willing to be taught. Ryan has a wealth of knowledge from years of experience working with one of the greatest bonsai masters alive today. He is one of the best at communicating complex concepts in a simple way so that others can understand. If you give up that quickly because of a perception of superiority (which I don't personally see), you will prevent yourself from learning. Don't limit yourself in that way. It sounds to me like it bothers you when someone communicates in the a way that says, "I know something that you don't." Ryan does know many things that we don't and he learned them from being willing to learn. He is offering priceless knowledge for free and I for one, I'm content to get "lectured" all day long from someone who is this knowledgeable and thorough.
I LOVE his style of presentation and am always amused that bonsai enthusiasts have such thin-skin/bark. If your feelings get hurt by a video on the internet then you are probably too sensitive.

Besides the fact that it is a lecture, your observation is faulty and probably born of arrogance, no one is forcing you to watch if you can't learn from someone who knows so much it's your loss! Ryan has never failed to freely give me any information I have asked for, always willingly and always more than expected. Other bonsai professionals will not give so freely, Ryan never holds back. Your complaining about the presentation of FREE videos that could easily and deservedly cost quite a bit is childish, simple solution don't watch don't learn!
