I mean to be fair, not many beings are on Aura's level. Her bragging to a relative unknown makes sense for her character. After all, there's probably a handful of mages in the world that actually stack up to her in this regard.

Qual might be the #1 spot before Frieren killed him? If so just goes to show a mage's power is not directly equal to their mana level alone. If not I imagine the answer is probably spoilers at this point. Strangely enough I would see Qual having absolutely no interest in the scales of obedience, even if he could have used them and never lost. I also love how Aura comments that she's observed Frieren multiple times (randomly?) and never once has there been any hint of her having more mana, so the underhanded tactics of supressing 24/7/365 really paid off!

Frieren telling Flamme that she likes magic "somewhat" is later mirrored by Frieren asking child Fern if she likes magic, and Fern answering she likes it "somewhat", which can be now seen as the moment that really convinced Frieren into teaching Fern. They're mirrors in many ways.

5:02 Remember the line of Frieren in one the first few episodes where she says "... but I was used to hear her beg for her life" it meant that she "begged for her life" against demons a few time to deceive them then kill them.

Also trained Frieren to not fall for her crying for help. Monsters like Einsam can catch you like this. Also, idk if you noticed, but in a previous episode, she said "So it's Himmel now", implying her closest person changed from Flamme to Himmel. Also her excessive force in dealing with it. 😂

I think that Flamme’s flower spell taught Frieren to love magic AGAIN when she had fallen out of love with it. Whereas Frieren used to wholeheartedly love magic when she first met Flamme, she only likes it “somewhat” just before Flamme’s passing. At that point, Frieren, for the past 50 years, has only been training in magic for combat-“for revenge.”
Flamme shared this pure love of magic with Frieren. This is why Flamme views suppressing mana as dishonorable even though humans shouldn’t have a distaste for it like demons do. Suppression is a technique only used for combat and it hides the beauty of it. Thus, it is a cruel and “shameful” thing that Frieren is consigned to a long existence of honing a magic meant only for fighting.
While Flamme did not regret training Frieren like this, she did have guilt as it had sullied Frieren’s innocent love for magic. This is why Flamme taught Frieren flower magic. In her last moments, she wanted to remind Frieren that magic is a beautiful thing-not just a method of violence. By passing on this spell to Frieren, Flamme hoped that it may rekindle that lost love.
It takes a thousand years, but it ultimately comes to fruition with the hero party. Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen find joy in the flower spell and seeing that changes Frieren. She no longer develops her magecraft to kill but to share happiness with others. Flamme, through this small gesture of kindness, apologizes to Frieren and allows her to love magic again.

I've read a comment from another channels video, that in this world when they say Humanity it includes Dwarves and Elves, don't know if it's true and if it's specifically mentioned in the manga but it makes sense, they just call them long lived, monsters and demons dissolve into mana particles when they die, there's so much world building lore to be explored there.

yes, but the word humanity has duality of meaning...
      1. It describes a collective of humans - sometimes this anime use it this way too.
      2. It describes the quality or state of being humane - which demons can't even begin to comprehend.

Love the discussion as always you guys! One of my favorite parts from this episode was Flamme telling Frieren to not leave her name in history until she defeated the Demon King. That's why Aura knew she was somewhat powerful, because she was apart of the party that defeated the Demon King, but had no clue about the hundreds of years she was training before that event. Really adds another layer to Flamme's strategy of always deceive the demons.

By far we have only known one Demon's specific age- Aura's.
    "That's fairly long-lived for a demon."
The thing is we never really got to know how old they can become. Given that they are sociopathic war-mongers, the only reason I think that they don't usually get to Frieren's age is because of other demons wanting to prove who's the best and them always sticking out like nails with how they try to wear their mana like uniforms.

    Great reaction as always.
First : if I someday look like I may be criticizing you - don't take it personally. I am criticizing US, the audience, for how we may be easily manipulated into thinking wrongly... I am not very good at not being abrasive :D
Manipulation and trickery : this is something at the core of the show. You said the show doesn't trick us - but it does. all the time. Demons trick with words, Frieren tricks with mana, and the author tricks with tropes and expectations. We are led to think a certain way - and ignore what doesn't fit this way of thinking. it happens all the time. just like the show "lied" for four episode about what genre it was :D
Demons. I think it helps to look at animals and how they avoid conflict. When two animals of the same species are in conflict,t hey often fight in ways that are not lethal. They growl or beat their chest to convince the other to stop the fight. That is what demons do : they look at each other's mana, and the weakest abandon the fight. That's the way they avoid conflict.
It is their way to be "honest" : they don't lie about how dangerous they are. The strong do not hide their power to trick the weak in an easily won fight. No wonder they see Frieren as a dishonourable person : she trained for centuries as a way to trick weaker opponents into a fight they otherwise would avoid.
Demons respect magic : if you are just a human, they will attack you by surprise. If you are a mage, however, they confront you openly.
In a way, magic is to demons what words are to humans. Demons can talk, so humans try to treat them as other humans, not as "monsters". That's the same for demons : if you are a mage, then it must means you are like them - you are at their level, not a "prey". Just like humans think demons can cooperate with them - demons think mages will act like other demons, that they have a common ground. And both species are wrong...
Trying to see the world through the eyes of a demon, their specie as a whole, their culture, is one of "honesty" and "respect". You don't lie about who you are and what you can do. for us, it looks like overconfidence or arrogance.
Aura, before casting her spell, took the time to read frieren's mana (something demons have always been able to do by the way). She took the time to evaluate her, look for potential trickery. Then, even if she knew that frieren's "aura" was weak, she made the effort to weaken her first by forcing her to deplete some mana. It is not the behaviour of an overconfident fool.
As I pointed in my comments in last video : none of the demons insult their opponent - nor do they "boast". Lûgner was not boasting about his superiority in front of Fern - he was thinking, not talking. They don't monologue about their power and how the pathetic humans stand no chance against them. They don't "show-off". We humans interpret them like that - because that' is what we would do. That is our way : trying to win through flexing and words. While demons know where they are in the hierarchy of power - they now how strong they are. Mages like fern and Frieren lie about the hierarchy - they cheat. Demons don't cheat. "Words are swords" as Lügner said : they see nothing underhanded in their use of words, because they are just tools. just like we, humans, see nothing underhanded in the way Frieren hides her mana. Two different worlds.
The demons in his show are absolutely amazing characters.... and this is just our introduction to them. Frieren is my favorite character in ALL of fiction. My second favorite is a demon from later in the story...
    Frieren's past.
So we learn many things - and can deduce or theorize many others.
She was already a powerful mage when Flamme found her. She had a big mana aura - and it was just after defeating a powerful demon, so it was the mana she had LEFT, not her full power. Compared to Aura's mana, she seem to have been a little weaker - so nearly as powerful as a 500+ years great demon who spend her time training, as Frieren told us...
Was she a fighter ? Probably not - she probably was the village's mage, but with such a passion for magic that she trained relentlessly... The most powerful of the village, she said. but probably not trained to fight. Who knows.
That was HER village. She lost everything with it. Family. Friends. May be lovers. May be even children ?
The reason there are so few elves is that they were systematically exterminated by the demons - and their low reproduction rate means that even after a thousand years they were not able to replenish their numbers. The explanation frieren gave us is the truth - but not the whole truth. She does that a lot - it"s her way of lying.
Flamme did not train Frieren to be a mage. She trained her to be a demon hunter. An assassin, who hides and lies and tricks to destroy her enemies. So much that she even does that with people who are not her enemies : she never reveals her age, or that she knew Flamme, nor even that she was Himmel's companion even if it would be advantageous. Even to Fern, she hid her past. If she had not said she remembered Flamme's face, her teammates would never had known. So maybe we should take everything she says with a grain of salt - maybe she is hiding her true feelings, her true motivations, behind layers of misdirection.
Flamme transformed this young looking elf with a passion for magic into a ruthless killer. She taught her to lie about herself and hide. And it nearly destroyed her passion. it nearly killed Frieren's true personality. Flamme was aware of it - and left behind things that would help Frieren "find herself back" when her mission will be over. The flower spell. The book under the tree with a new " mission". Things to help her revive her old self.
By the way : for Himmel and the other, their quest to destroy the demon king was a ten years journey. For Frieren, the journey was one thousand years long... It may change the way we understand the first episode.
In a way, we can see Frieren as a war veteran who is just now coming back to civilian life.
May be her name "Frieren" , meaning "to freeze" is a way to tell us that a part of her was kept "on ice" for a thousand years - and we see her thawing.
In episode 4, Himmel told "that is the kind of person you are". Maybe, after so long a war, Frieren had forgotten who she truly was. May be we are not seeing her "learn", but reawakening her true personality. Maybe we are watching her forgetting the "Slayer".
Sorry for the long post, I love this story in an unreasonable way. And seeing you react to it is a pleasure.

You're definitely right about the whole demon king trope being somewhat overused in fantasy anime, especially Isekai. When I first read the manga was was worried at first too because having a demon king sort of turned me off from the story, that is until the world building kicked in and they showed the demons being these lovecraftian apex predators. Also the show doesn't really stick juch to medieval tropes either, I'd say based on everything shown it's much closer to a blend of DnD and Final Fantasy classic.
Also in this episode, we learn that the demons literally comitted genocide on the entire Elven race, if Frierens attitude towards them wasn't already justified from the nature of the demons themselves, this definitely solidifies it.

I like how you guys immediately got another point some other reactors usually miss: the small bit about Frieren's early hatred for demons and how Flamme was only able to teach her offensive spells. Later on, with the party of heroes, she relearned to love magic that made people happy instead.
I like how the story sets this by having Flamme tell Frieren that, amidst all the killing magic she has taught her, the flower magic was her favorite spell and teaches it to her. Later on Himmel comments Frieren on this, which then unconsciously gives her a new spark of joy for discovering "silly" magic instead of offensive spells used for war.

"that editing" that scared you last roughly 1 second, it is a montage of the 10year long journey of frieren and the hero party. prio to that we get a roughly 1 minute montage of frieren trainging for 1000 years after Flamme's passing. It is meant to depict how these amounts of time feel to an immortal being like Frieren.
Also Frieren isnt famouns as Aura tells us because the Demon King has ordered every elf to be killed as mentioned by the 3 demons that Flamme killed. So Flamme told Frieren to live in obscurity until she defeats the Demon king. Which is why a mage as strong as frieren that lived for at least 1000 years hasnt been passed on to myths or legends prior to the demon king's defeat. A fact that works both ways since it didnt only protect frieren from demons but also further expanded on the whole premise of keeping her power secret to surprise demons

  • @mendiganina6001

To clarify, every being there, human, elf, dwarf or demon has mana, no matter if they're warriors or mages, but the mages use their mana create magic, and train to have more for that reason. For example that's how Linie's power works, she memorizes how mana moves inside a warrior and imitates it.

  • @_zurr
    @_zurr 3 місяці тому

A key component of the Aura's misjudgement is the fact that Frieren stayed hidden for a thousand years. It's such a ludicrous and inefficent long game that no one would even consider it being done. Let alone Demons, for whom that idea is a fundamental blind spot of their psychology. And since she trained for so long, her control was great enough to even fool the heightened demon mana detection.

  • @DarwinAwardWinner
    @DarwinAwardWinner 5 місяців тому +2

The interesting thing is, we'll learn later that there's no fundamental reason that a mage with less mana can't win a fight. The mage with the most mana doesn't automatically win. But Aura's spell works the way it does because it's a pure expression of the demonic cultural understanding of mana: Aura literally can't conceive of a lesser mage dominating a greater one, so she can't make a spell that would do that either. Not only that, Aura's spell is fooled (temporarily) by Frieren's mana suppression, because it would never occur to Aura to anticipate suppression in the spell's design, because, in her words, "why would you do something so pointless?" It's not a limitation of the magic system of this world, it's a limitation of Aura's demonic mind.
Something fun to contemplate: when the scales start tipping, they pause when they're perfectly balanced and sit there for a minute. So that means Frieren was exactly balancing the scales on purpose, playing with them like a magic fidget spinner, while she narrated Aura's defeat.

The reason why the DK ordered the extinction of the elves was probably because he saw their potential. These guys can life longer than most Demons so better to get rid of them before they pose a threat. ... Also, if you like this tickeling feeling you mentioned at 27:40, you should watch "Ascendance of a Bookworm". It has several of these moments. Though it is an isekai, it is probably the best one out there. The writing is on par with Frieren, being mostly slice of life with some action and drama sprinkled inbetween, and it doesn´t have the typical lame op mc of other isekai. ... I'd say maybe there's a grimoire out there with a spell that can create a 23 and Me kit, buuuut it'd be almost 30 years too late to be able to confirm anything. 😭

bro, how come your channel hasn't reached 10k subscribers!? your reactions are better than several other reaction channels... keep up the work and other interesting anime reactions, I believe your channel will be bigger if you continue to maintain your style... btw I want to request to react to anime classroom of the elite

Awww thank you so much! 😭💖 That's so sweet and encouraging! It really means a lot to us! We'll definitely add that to the list of things to react to in the future!
It might take a while though, because we'd like to build a much bigger following before prioritizing older anime recommendations. I'm currently juggling school, work, and UA-cam so it's hard to find the time to edit. If we're lucky enough to be successful, I'll be able to quit my job and prioritize UA-cam. Then I'd love to post more than one series at a time! Sorry if that was TMI... I just didn't want to lead you on. Thank you so much for the recommendation though! I've heard really good things about that anime!

Apart from reacting to anime, I suggest making reaction videos for songs, like anime opening reactions!? , and if you want to be more extensive you can react to popular Japanese songs... I've seen many channels succeed by doing that...@@CuddlinginCarnage

You guys had that whole discussion about whether or not to pause to speak but honestly the worst thing is that you just don't stop talking the whole time, you spoke or laughed over every cool moment this episode and missed some cool details, pausing would be better than that for sure

    • @CuddlinginCarnage
      @CuddlinginCarnage  5 місяців тому

You're so right... 😅 Thanks for pointing that out! We've already pre-recorded up to episode 12, but we will try to hesitate less when it comes to pausing in future episodes. We were so careful not to pause when we first started live reactions that it's a hard habit to break.
We also tend to laugh and talk a lot when we watch things even when we're not on camera. I think it would be a pretty boring reaction if we just stared blankly at the screen just so that we don't miss any details. I rewatch episodes and we read the comments, so anything we miss we find out later.
We're going to pause more and see how that goes! But if we miss something please feel free to let us know in the comments! (as long as it's not spoilers lol) We love how you guys help us appreciate the show even more than we already do! ☺️

Yeah I definitely understand you don't just want to sit in silence 😅 I honestly think if you find a happy medium between pausing and talking, you guys will definitely be one of the better reaction channels because your personalities are great, you're a lot of fun to watch so keep being yourselves, if you're re-watching in your own time that solves the problem either way 😊

Why did the Demon King want to destroy the elves?
    Basically,
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
There's a very powerful and dangerous demon who can see every potential future. This Demon is probably the one who told the demon king that an elf would be his ruin.
