My brother decided in 2011, coming from a boston houshold where our father and me were of course cheering for the Bruins, that he needed to be a vancouver fan. He doesnt really watch hockey.
That's pretty cool. I live in Toronto and had a friend. An older friend/neighbour who loved every Boston team. His family had no connection to Boston whatsoever. He just decided to cheer fir every Boston team.. But he even liked the Patriots and this was in the 70s when they sucked. It was neat. Btw does your brother still follow the Canucks?
My all-time favorite hockey name is Pär Djoos ("pear juice"). Other favorites include Håkan Loob, Zarley Zalapski, Reijo Ruotsalainen, Aki Berg, Merlin Malinowski, Espen Knutsen, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Dion Phaneuf, Larry Playfair (1814 PIMs), Jean-Yves Roy, Bruce Shoebottom, Wacey Rabbit, Bob Beers, Jakin Smallwood, Canadiens teammates Guy Carbonneau and José Charbonneau, Pete Peeters, and of course Daren Puppa.
I'd say there's a fine line between self-deprecating and self-hating, but hey, what do I know? I'm so bad at self-deprecation, the last time I tried to insult myself, I ended up taking it as a backhanded compliment.
Shannon, longtime B’s 🐻fan for over five decades. And a THG follower since moving to Tokyo in 2002. Definitely appreciate your unbiased assessment and frustrations with your favorite teams. Your overall review and analysis of hockey is indeed in the top two with Lyle Richardson (Spector’s Hockey). Thanks for your efforts and an early happy holiday season to you and family🏒🏒🏒
You are an inspiration! You are a true fan of the league and your favourite teams, no doubt. Loved the stories about you and your dad! Keep making these amazing videos. Cheers from Sweden
80s and 90s hockey brought us the biggest stars, the greatest plays, the most insane saves and the fans were completely unhinged....... i feel honored to be a part of these eras.
For the superstitions, they are all valid because It’s Always Sunny proved that “everything that every fan does, at home or at the stadium, makes a direct impact to the game”
I struggle to comprehend how anyone could think that you're not a true fan. You are the biggest most passionate fan of the game itself that I know of. I think the only thing that is stopping you from doing a video about every team on every League all the time is time itself. You're only one man and you only have so many hours in a day. Screw the haters and as always thank you for being as awesome as you are dude
Thanks for the video! Fandom is a highly individual thing and no two fans are alike. While I am a Blackhawks fan, I also follow the teams of my friends and family, like the Avs, Philly, Canes, Kraken, and the Bolts. I also cheer for teams with players who used to be on teams I like. And sometimes players who I like who are just so good it is impossible not to appreciate their skill. At the end of the day, I am primarily a fan of hockey. Seems like you are too.
Hey mate, you don't have to apologise (we use s and not z) for cheering for your teams at all. You are a true fan! I cheered for Big D as my first hockey team and enjoyed the controversial cup in 99. (Sorry BUF) I moved to Vancouver BC in 2009 and could not cheer for the Stars any longer and have been a Canucks fan ever since. It was super scary seeing the damage of the riot to the city (but I know that was not all hockey fans destroying town) I now live in Melbourne Australia (I am from New Zealand) and I am a proud Canucks fan. I have high hopes for this season. Anyway, thank you for the channel Shannon. I have been watching since COVID (lockdown) and I thoroughly enjoy your hockey knowledge, debates, the jerseys, fun facts, power rankings, panic indexes.... yeah I like it all. You are the hockey guy and I believe you are non-biased and speak the truth of all 32 teams. Thank you so much to you and your wife, family and the cats! "Darcy Wakaluk!"
Just want to say that I appreciate you and your channel so much. I’ve been a hockey fan since about 1991-92 but I had kinda fallen off following closely recently. Partly because I had no way to watch my Bruins, since NESN can’t play nice with the streaming services, but I bit the bullet and am paying the outrageous $30/month for NESN 360 this year as I decided I was gonna get back into it and you have helped to really rekindle my love for the sport, while at the same time helping me to quickly learn what I need to know for this season. I now watch your content religiously, as hockey (and wrestling and video games) are my religion. Thanks Shannon!
Been an on and off Ranger fan for a long while. I was way too young to witness and appreciate their 94 run (born 92). Forgetting 2014 which is a past nightmare now, but regardless it’s team that I’ve followed since childhood, I’ll just see how far they’ll go. I’m used to the heartbreaks.
I enjoyed this video. The '81 Stars were good. I saw them on Long Island with a friend during a regular season game. The Stars won something like 6-5. I also remember Don Beaupre's time with the Capitals. I didn't know him before his time with the Caps but I thought he did a very good job with Washington. I put him their number 3 Caps goalie of all time behind Braden Holtby and Olie Kolzig. I also like the old Minnesota North Stars logo. It is awesome like the Whalers logo was. As to gambling, I generally don't. However I have a cousin who does and has done pretty well with it too. She's also a Penguins fan. Since the Pens and Caps play this weekend, we made a $5 bet. Of course I want the Caps to win, but I really don't care so much about the money and if the Pens win, I don't mind paying because she is a favorite cousin.
Maniago played a little for the Canucks but was best known as a North Stars goalie. Looked so much like Roberto Luongo it was eerie. Same size, build, everything. The famous early Canucks goalie was Gary "Suitcase" Smith. A big, big goalie with a blonde afro.
Jon Casey had perhaps one of the best, if not the best goalie setups of all time. The black with green pads with the green mask during the N jersey era, and the full black pads with black with gold mask during the STARS jersey era were simply awesome and stunning to look at. I'd take Jon Casey's 1992 goalie gear over anything before that
Also regarding the losses to the Panthers, it looked like the Stars were starting to get somewhere against them. I wondered to myself what would have happened if Panthers had to win 4 games.
For the 3 years leading up to the Avs winning the cup, I listened exclusively to the radio broadcast and synced it too the stream. I was so happy when I heard my favorite commentator call the win I helped because of my tireless effort syncing the streams. I switched to the TV broadcasts the following year and they haven't won since, and it's all my fault.
Favorite sports names : Larry Goodenough, Bill Goldsworthy, Darryl Strawberry, Tom Canada ( American) and Wonderful Monds (Wonderful Terrific Monds Jr. who won a Grey Cup with Ottawa in '76)
The only one I have a difficult time understanding is still liking the Stars after they moved from MN. At the same time, I grew up in MN as a huge North Stars fan and being from the state of hockey where the team was shipped away, there was a lot of resentment. Ironically, I moved to CO over 20 years ago and am now a huge Avs fan and the irony is that I imagine many folks in Quebec probably feel quite similar about the Avs as I do about the Stars.
I also cheered when Dallas won in 1999, I was pissed at buffalo for knocking out the habs when I was a kid lol It’s weird because I feel like I was aware of the rule change that the player with possession of the puck was allowed to have his foot in the crease when the revised the rules
Favorite hockey name: Miles Zaharko. Not only because it's a great name but also because it could never turn up anywhere but hockey. Doug Gwosdz was also a great hockey name but he was a baseball player, LOL. (Pronounced "Goosh" which makes it even more of a hockey name. I grew up on hockey on the radio. Not too much hockey on TV in those days. Maybe two nights a week, and that was because I grew up in NY where we had two teams. But Saturday night Islanders, Sunday nights Rangers, Tuesday night Islanders, Wednesday night Rangers, on WMCA & WNEW. Saturday nights there'd often be a TV game, so you could have one game on the TV and the other on the radio. Baseball & hockey were both great on the radio. Football, so much.
the Hockey Guy is probably a much bigger hockey fan than most of the regular viewers of this channel. i know i appreciate his knowledge of the game as i don't have the time for that. so i come here and get my fix of NHL news. yes i am a Canucks fan and the Boston series gives me nightmares for different reasons that the results. Oh, i thought the Big M video was great. people should watch it😃
You’re allowed to like multiple teams, especially if it’s not fair weather fandom. I grew up in NJ and was a Devils fan. But I’ve spent most of my adult life in Nashville and warmed up to the Preds (helped that Jason Arnott was the captain when I first moved)to the point where choosing between the two would be like choosing between my children. Now my closest team is Utah and it’s hard not to cheer them on after all the BS in the valley.
As a Canuck fan 2011 was devastating and still pisses me off.. but nothing pisses me off more than 1994.. and the lame-ass Mark Messier era that followed a few years after.
Honestly, it is kinda remarkable to have 3 favorite teams and only witness 1 Stanley cup win between them in your whole life so far. Theoretically you have better odds than most people.
100% agree on the regular season Luongo, playoff McLean take. For a little while there, McLean would always go beast mode in the playoffs and probably stole 1 game per series.
2011 run makes me think of how important depth is. Losing Manny early in playoffs, we're able to replace a key cog Defence was deep enough till they lost Hamhius, Salo, in finals, even losing Rome to the hit on Horton. Can never have enough qiluality dmen
My favourite hockey names from my time as a fan, off the top of my head: Branko Radevojevic Daren Puppa Sergei Krivokrasov Keith Tkachuk Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre Miroslav Satan And because it's the easiest, most basic hockey name of all time: Mike Smith

I’ve also never been big on gloating because, of course, the hockey gods are vengeful. However, I will defend my players (not always every single one wearing a blue note) if an opposing fan belittles them
I understand the not believing in the team and being a true fan. Been saying the Wings aren’t making the playoffs this year since free agency but have been a fan since 1997 when I was five so that makes total sense to me being hard on your team I think shows how much you love them
I'm thinking how many people remember that terrible DJ😅 Not for his play selection but because he was only guy Cheering for those Dallas Stars- AND HIS FOOT WAS IN THE CREASE
Has Shannon ever given us a count of how many jerseys he now has hanging up back there? Also, it sort of looks like he has them in alphabetical order too. It really looks like a retail store behind the white board. Pretty impressive.
🤣the Albuquerque Isotopes! ... "Damnit, that city has way too much spirit! Call Dallas, ask em how much they want for the Cowboys!" "uhm...they play Football sir..." "They'll play what I tell em to play...for I am the Mayor of Albuquerque..." One of the last really good A+ episodes imo, the seasons after 13 could be great if they removed about half of the episodes, a lot like South Park did to manage to still be good when reaching 11/12 seasons. I always like that humor us internet morons are likely to catch you insert in those videos 😆
I don't really gamble but I do fantasy football. Historically, I've felt bad when I played a player or a team in eliminator that played the Browns, but since they've been perpetually putrid, I don't feel bad anymore because at least something good can come out of their awfulness. I hate the "oh you're not a true fan or you're not fan enough" or "You don't know how many goals Connor McDavid scored last year, you're not really an Oilers fan". There are different levels of fan from the bandwagon to the stat dictionary fan. If you're a Bruins fan because you like Black and yellow,, fine.
I'm not surprised Kari Lehtonen is not on the board for you there. But I will say, for me he is the most naturally gifted goalie I've ever seen play live. My physio used to play junior hockey with Kari and he said Kari was absolutely phenomenal. The problem was Kari relied heavily on his talents, some of the more physical exercises not so much.. Maybe he could've avoided some of his injuries if he laid the quote unquote foundations for his career better. Who knows... So yeah I'm sad he didn't become one of the legendary goalies in the NHL. However as I said Lehtonen is the most talented goalie I've seen playing for Jokerit. And for that he's one of my favorites ever. Though I understand there's not a ton of love for him in Dallas.
I liked the video for the title alone hahaha
@@jtnotmiller same here!
Should be a new series.
no one asked . tag ur sister
same, first clicked the like, and now watching the video
Another legendary title 😂
My brother decided in 2011, coming from a boston houshold where our father and me were of course cheering for the Bruins, that he needed to be a vancouver fan. He doesnt really watch hockey.

Fun names just make everything better lol. Kings got a guy in our system called Mathew Mania and man I hope he makes it because wow such a good name
The marketing with that last name practically writes itself.
Ukko Pekka-Luukkonen is my current fav
McLean's 50-save game 1 in 94 was one of the greatest goaltending performances in a cup finals I've ever seen
DJ Skanes is a great name
My all-time favorite hockey name is Pär Djoos ("pear juice"). Other favorites include Håkan Loob, Zarley Zalapski, Reijo Ruotsalainen, Aki Berg, Merlin Malinowski, Espen Knutsen, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, Dion Phaneuf, Larry Playfair (1814 PIMs), Jean-Yves Roy, Bruce Shoebottom, Wacey Rabbit, Bob Beers, Jakin Smallwood, Canadiens teammates Guy Carbonneau and José Charbonneau, Pete Peeters, and of course Daren Puppa.
Aki Berg becomes so much better and more fun when you use the proper full name: Aki-Petteri Berg.
Wacey Rabbit 💪💪
I have enjoyed seeing the other 'fun' jerseys, I was thinking about it earlier today, but I also love the 32 team collection.
Don’t worry Man we’ll keep that little Dallas, Boston secret between us but thank you for risking yourself sharing that. Made the video 😂
I'd say there's a fine line between self-deprecating and self-hating, but hey, what do I know?
I'm so bad at self-deprecation, the last time I tried to insult myself, I ended up taking it as a backhanded compliment.
Haven’t heard the name Wakaluk in years! The Moog and Wakaluk tandem were fun.
Roberto Luongo's first ever playoff series was the absolutely amazing goalie duel against Marty Turco. Completely gobsmacked by that set.
I've never believed in there being a "right way" to be a sports fan.
The only right way to be a sports fan ..... watch and enjoy the sport with some passion. 👊
You are an inspiration! You are a true fan of the league and your favourite teams, no doubt. Loved the stories about you and your dad! Keep making these amazing videos. Cheers from Sweden
I had the cooper Eddie Belfour street hockey goalie equipment
80s and 90s hockey brought us the biggest stars, the greatest plays, the most insane saves and the fans were completely unhinged....... i feel honored to be a part of these eras.
some of the battles between Luongo and Turco in the playoffs were crazy
For the superstitions, they are all valid because It’s Always Sunny proved that “everything that every fan does, at home or at the stadium, makes a direct impact to the game”
I do the exact same thing with jerseys after wins. Only exception to wearing one the day of a game is if I'm going to it
I struggle to comprehend how anyone could think that you're not a true fan. You are the biggest most passionate fan of the game itself that I know of. I love seeing Shannon's enthusiasm come out. It's not just about numbers, it's about LOVE!
Internet Moron Guy, the twice removed third cousin of THG and TEG

You are a grear fan thank you ,I love the career videos keep them coming
Keep being you Hockey Guy. Perfect
Gerry Cheevers was an older Boston goalie, and had a cool last name too.
"at this point I just feel bad for them it's not fun" ...yes it is and I'm sure your dad would agree
Watching the Leafs every postseason its tons of fun for me
Been an on and off Ranger fan for a long while. I was way too young to witness and appreciate their 94 run (born 92). Forgetting 2014 which is a past nightmare now, but regardless it’s team that I’ve followed since childhood, I’ll just see how far they’ll go. I’m used to the heartbreaks.
"I've gone through my fandom before" lol yeah I'll say.. there's probably enough for a playlist
Ok, Shannon, you have me intrigued
I enjoyed this video.

Didn't Cesare Maniago play in goal for the Canucks sometime during the '70s? I saw him play here in Pittsburgh; looked like a solid goalie.

Good fan👍 This turned out to be an interesting history video as well.
I love the Anaheim - THG dynamic. Will they win you over eventually? I hope so, their outreach team seems fun and they have great jerseys.

Great video Shannon
Marty Turco pulled off the open bench door prank during an NHL game. Legend.
Also regarding the losses to the Panthers, it looked like the Stars were starting to get somewhere against them. I wondered to myself what would have happened if Panthers had to win 4 games.
Don't get me started on superstitions !!...
New signs look sharp! 😁👍

Favorite sports names : Larry Goodenough, Bill Goldsworthy, Darryl Strawberry, Tom Canada ( American) and Wonderful Monds (Wonderful Terrific Monds Jr. who won a Grey Cup with Ottawa in '76)
Definitely do a video of your favourite Finnish names. I would watch that immediately.
So hard for me not to comment while watching, saying, you wrote “listeD” instead of listen 🤦🏻♂️😂 so yeah, you caught it 👍🏻

love this video!
I just hope you’re still liking Ottawa, it might finally be the year 😂
Ah maaaaan. Those Diwali Skate hats are so sick.
My teams are the Leafs and the Sabres so this hits home
I also cheered when Dallas won in 1999, I was pissed at buffalo for knocking out the habs when I was a kid lol

you're an awesome guy shannon definitely not a moron
As a Philly kid I was NOT allowed to cheer for non Philly teams of any sport lol
Everyone has a favorite team. Some have two. I always loved how you have three
Absolutely and I’m a Buffalo & Vancouver fan in BC to
Luongo was the best Canuck in the 2011 final. Best goalie the canucks have ever had, easily.
Kirk McLean was pretty good as well
Marty Turco is still loved in his hometown.
the Hockey Guy is probably a much bigger hockey fan than most of the regular viewers of this channel. i know i appreciate his knowledge of the game as i don't have the time for that. so i come here and get my fix of NHL news. yes i am a Canucks fan and the Boston series gives me nightmares for different reasons that the results.
Nob star + that title. What a great video.
Honestly, it is kinda remarkable to have 3 favorite teams and only witness 1 Stanley cup win between them in your whole life so far. Theoretically you have better odds than most people.

Defence was deep enough till they lost Hamhius, Salo, in finals, even losing Rome to the hit on Horton. Can never have enough qiluality dmen
I'm still more angry at New York for 94 than Boston in 11. Haha. Man, that 94 run broke 10 year old me's heart.
I read the title, instant like.
My favourite hockey names from my time as a fan, off the top of my head:
Branko Radevojevic
Daren Puppa
Sergei Krivokrasov
Keith Tkachuk
Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre
Miroslav Satan
And because it's the easiest, most basic hockey name of all time: Mike Smith
Back when it wasn’t such a hassle to watch hockey, I used to watch other teams more, followed playoff runs, and though it was fun when, say, the 94 Rangers won, it’s just nothing compared to a team you’ve been rooting for years winning.
I’ve also never been big on gloating because, of course, the hockey gods are vengeful. However, I will defend my players (not always every single one wearing a blue note) if an opposing fan belittles them
That no gloating superstition is etched in stone with me.
I understand the not believing in the team and being a true fan. Been saying the Wings aren’t making the playoffs this year since free agency but have been a fan since 1997 when I was five so that makes total sense to me being hard on your team I think shows how much you love them
"I didn't see the game. Who won?" 😂😂😂😂
I'm thinking how many people remember that terrible DJ😅
Not for his play selection but because he was only guy Cheering for those Dallas Stars- AND HIS FOOT WAS IN THE CREASE
Ryan miller with the greatest save of all time while in Vancouver.
Which one was that?
@Aarona97 ua-cam.com/video/7SJROJdpRE4/v-deo.htmlsi=Jtp33gTuIVjunn7C
@Aarona97 search YT for Ryan Miller Goalie, you will find a video of Vancouver vs Detroit from 7 years ago.
Video title checks out
I like opening this app and immediately giggling at a title.
Well, you could have put the Stars logo in place of the North Stars' logo and it would have spelled "SOB", so I think nob was the better option.
Imagine Vancouver beats dallas in the semi-finals and then boston in the finals? Shannon would lose his mind.
thank you for not trashing dan cloutier, he's definitely more maligned than he should be.
Great title ! 😂
"I'm not that old." 😂 I was born in 1986 and coming up 40 lol. Age is just a number
That jersey is 🔥
I like that hat 👌
Damn I was born in 80. Thought you were younger than me brother.
What is good ol’ Darcy Wakaluk up to these days anyway?
Has Shannon ever given us a count of how many jerseys he now has hanging up back there? Also, it sort of looks like he has them in alphabetical order too. It really looks like a retail store behind the white board. Pretty impressive.
Darcy Wakaluk. You are correct. A fun name to say.
Go Topes!!
Rask was great wasn't a fan of the his team but Finland was pumping out some great goalies then
Where did you find the early 90's variant of the skate? Never seen one in that good of condition.
Of all the things for an internet moron to do, this is the most productive. Thanks for using your powers for good.
THG finally is self aware. Dude yaps about stuff which is obvious to everyone
🤣the Albuquerque Isotopes! ... "Damnit, that city has way too much spirit! Call Dallas, ask em how much they want for the Cowboys!" "uhm...they play Football sir..." Somebody roots for some TERRIBLE teams.....😂
I'm a bad fan because I don't think the Sharks are winning the cup this year.
I don't really gamble but I do fantasy football. Historically, I've felt bad when I played a player or a team in eliminator that played the Browns, but since they've been perpetually putrid, I don't feel bad anymore because at least something good can come out of their awfulness.

NOB* - basically a decent name for the greedy corp that brought you GTA V.
I'm not surprised Kari Lehtonen is not on the board for you there. But I will say, for me he is the most naturally gifted goalie I've ever seen play live. So yeah I'm sad he didn't become one of the legendary goalies in the NHL. However as I said Lehtonen is the most talented goalie I've seen playing for Jokerit. And for that he's one of my favorites ever. Though I understand there's not a ton of love for him in Dallas.
