      @@carolinebarley To be fair it's pretty damn hard to do this alone when you don't have expertise in building things, anyone to advise you, help you and you don't have all the tools. I've built stuff and renovated rooms on my own (as a woman too) and it's a hassle and takes a looong time and many days of patience! Keep running back and forth to the stores almost daily because things don't work out the way you want, things you didn't know you were supposed to do, and it ends up being 3x as expensive as planned. So I too would love to have a partner who's into this kind of things!

      You are never too old to start woodworking yourself. I started at 60, and have done many repairs around the house that would have cost a lot. Plus my sister asked me to come and fix something that her joiner did wrong (but she didn't want to get the joiner back). he did a lot of things wrong. Luckily I had the equipment to fix those things.

    You can tape and mud a drywall joint that is a 1/4 inch or more. They don't have to be perfect. The real reason to have your drywall off the floor is in case of spills. You don't want a minor spill wicking up into your drywall.

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  Рік тому +1

      My OCD side that has to make joints perfect can't stand drywall for this reason!😂 That makes sense! I'd thought about that when hanging drywall in my basement (leaving it off the slab so that moisture wouldn't wick into it).

    one small tip: rather than use glue on trimming, just tack some very shallow oval round molding on. The problem with the glue is that people drag things off the shelves and they can catch on the edge and pull it off over time. Using real wood trim also gives the shelves a nice hand feel.

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  Рік тому

      Solid wood trim is definitely a good route👊. So far, I've only ever had edge banding peel off if the corners aren't slightly rounded with fine grit sandpaper (making a lip for baskets or clothes to catch on) or the bond was somehow compromised from the beginning. Thanks for watching and definitely a good alternative!

    Could you give any tips for sizing out the door opening? trim looks 1". how much of a gap do you leave for the door?

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  Рік тому

      Sure thing! For the door we used it listed the necessary dimensions for the opening which made it easy. If you're by chance using a door you already have and don't have the mfg. recommendations for the door opening I would first measure the door (obvious I know lol). For a bi-fold door like I used in this video add the thickness of the casing (for left and right side) you'll use to trim the opening + 1/4" for a bit of wiggle room. You can trim these doors a touch after the fact if needed.
      Hope that helps!

    An amazing job, especially the doors look so gorgeous, but such a closet is not cheaper than going to IKEA to buy a finished product, and you have to spend like 5 days to build it, especially difficult when you don't have so many tools. And not to mention that it's not really finished yet, to install the inside of a closet takes you like another day to install all the drawers and that might cost another thousand dollars.
    And when you fasten things to the floor, it’s better to drill through your hardwood floor first, and only fasten with the subfloor underneath. hardwood floor needs some room to stretch.

    • @Wavelover33
      @Wavelover33 2 роки тому +1

      Do your research - that would be $1500 to do an ikea closet. This was probably $300 of wood and drywall plus doors. Then with ikea to blend it into the room you’d still have to buy trim and wood etc.and he did drill the floor first.

    What would you do if you have VERY textured popcorn ceilings, so the stud won't sit flush on the ceiling?

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  Рік тому

      I would be caught trying to just screw it to the ceiling joists but if it wasn't seating well I'd scrap/and the popcorn texture where the top cord needed to go.

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  Рік тому

      Hi Yin! If you find a door you like you can then look up the specs for required opening dimensions. On Home Depot's site this information is fairly easy to find.

      @@WoodshopMike yeah I know the opening dimensions from the door. However from the frame to the finished opening , I see some Guidelines of leaving extra 2inches all sides for the frame opening to accommodate the drywall or trim?

    Curious about the decision to have the doors not go the entire length. Now that is is installed, would you prefer the doors to be wider or have different doors?

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  2 роки тому

      We really like the door. We'd originally thought about a barn door, but given where the closet is in the room we opted for bifold doors so we could have a larger opening. Also, I kinda like have a bit of the closet not open. This gives more corners to prop stuff in. Just my 2 cents though👍😃

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  9 місяців тому

      Thank you very much! I don't believe I do, but I cope baseboards with a narrow fine tooth blade in a jigsaw held upside down for the inside corners. (I'm sure that's only marginally helpful 😂). Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Okay newbie question here but, do I need to know what size and kind of closet doors I'm getting first? How will I know how wide the doorway needs to be?

    • @WoodshopMike

      No worries! Yes, you'll want to know what door size you want before framing in the closet. The rough opening for the door will be provided with the door specs 👍👍

    Great work Woodshop Mike 👍🤓
    When thinking of the entire build before hand did you take into consideration the bi-fold door widths for your opening?
    I understand the build is pretty straightfwd if a person is quite handy. But dims sometimes stump me from beginning. Thks,

      Thank you! We actually wanted barn doors originally, but the space just wasn't conducive to that. I made sure I had all of the dimensions for the bifold doors before framing the opening. That information is available from where the door is ordered👍👍

    Hi, how would you extend the height of an existing closet all the way to the ceiling?

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  2 роки тому

      That's a difficult question to answer. It could be as easy as just cutting away the drywall and framing in the ceiling of the closet, but there could be utilities like HVAC ducting that had to be framed around. Best bet is to have a contractor come out and take a look at what you're wanting to do if you're unsure.

    What size trim did you put on the sides of the closet. I used .5” drywall framed with 2x4. If I want to do it like you, I would need to use a trim that is 4.5” inches wide and I can’t find any. Did you cut yours to that size?
