Altered Altoid Tin: Making Faux Rust Cover

- In today’s video I am going to show how to add faux rust to the cover of a tin. It’s what I did here for this altered pocket shrine.

The materials used are a tin (such as an Altoid tin), Gorilla wood glue, and a mini-blowtorch. Please take care when using the torch!

What? You threw away free art supplies? We don't have Altoids in Britain so I have to get my family to save them up for me and send them over in a shoe box every year or so. They keep me going to a while.

Kelly, I'm trying to also know how to get an antique look on an altered tin with paints or other materials. I don't want to obliterate the decoration on top but still show what's underneath in an interesting way. Any thoughts? Could you do a video on this or suggest one? Thanks a bunch!
Hi Leslie, my first thought is a kind of stain. I make homemade plant inks and tomorrow I will take on to the studio and see how it stains on tin. YOu may need a stain specifically for metal such as you could get at a DIY store. It is possible to get a faux stain with an acrylic glaze but it might peel. Let me do some experimenting and get to you. And thanks for the suggestion to do it as a video. I ALWAYS want to know what people want to see. 🌻🌼😺
Thank you for this tutorial! I don't have access to the same glue you used, but found another brand wood glue. Will try it out safely in an open space and see if it works. :) Also, I couldn't find the link for newsletter subscription in your website. Saw a "follow" button, but it just takes me to another website. Hope you can help me with this. Thank you!

It’s fun combining colors to get the look and feel you like.
Anyway, I Love your French Religious art and use of Catholic iconery. (Did I use and spell the word right?)

Thank you, Kara. It is fun how many art supplies we can find in our kitchen. When you use texture paste what do you colour/cover it with? I once used embossing powders and they worked surprisingly well. I am in France today and am finding such cool, old religious pieces. I am not Catholic but there is such mystery in some of them, and beauty, and stories, so I keep on collecting them. 🌻🌷🌼Kelly
@@BookandPaperArts I didn’t think you were Catholic so I thought that was really cool that you appreciated the art without being Catholic. Then I saw the rosaries and chaplets and thought “oh she’s just a Catholic doing her thing”. THEN somewhere I learned yoy weren’t and I became really impressed again. Lol. If you can follow that!
France - St. Bernadette (my patron Saint), Lourdes, I think St Theresa is French also. You’ll see her portrayed holding a large wooden crucifix with flowers. So I’m sure you’ll come back with some great stuff. I dig the altoid shrine idea. I have 2 altoid tins on my craft desk now. I’m going to dig up some stuff and do a shrine too!! I used to have all those medals.
Kelly as far as the texture paste I used a blend of colors, a med brown, a red, and god knows what I covered it with. Some varnish. Whatever I had.

For me the rosaries are very special vintage jewelry, worn with respect but not imbuing themselves with supernatural aspects. I bought one yesterday with lovely garnet coloured glass beads! And yes, you see a lot of Bernadette and Terese of the Little Flowers. I actually found a holy card with Joan of Arc yesterday. She wasn't made a saint until 1920 so she comes to the holy card game a little late and I am always delighted when I find one. She also figures in the history of Chinon where I am staying and I look forward to learning more. Saturday I visited a 12th century church carved in the side of a mountain! (Quite a trek to get there.🌞) Okay, off to an abbey! Kelly

Interesting, how did you come up with this technique with the wood glue
Hi Nicola, I borrowed it from encaustic work. You can blister the wood substrate for wax encaustic with wood glue and I wondered hmmmm, what about tin and hey, presto, rust!
Does this technique need to be sealed afterword? It seems like the glue would easily chip off.
Hi David. Nope, the blistering fuses itself to the tin. I have done this for years and have had no flaking. Give it a try! Kelly

Curious if you took a standard long neck lighter -- like for a grill, and would that work as well?
Hi Leslie, in theory, yes, it would make the glue blister but in practice it would take a long time to cover the whole tin and to get a really gorgeous patina it helps to do two or more coats. Still, you can try! Or hold out for a small blowtorch. Mine is a "chef's" blowtorch for lighting small desserts flambé. They do not cost much (I bought mine on Ebay).

Also, I like the look also of just one layer if you want the picture or text beneath to show but to still look antiqued.
@@lesliemacdonald7976 Terrific! They also make a mean creme brulée, if you have a hankering for one. My husband, who likes to cook, keeps swiping mine!
How about the fumes?
Lucy, I've been doing this for years and have had no problem with fumes. I think it is because it is the smaller version of a big propane torch. Not much more than a cigarette lighter but with better aim. If that makes sense.
that is a BUTANE lighter, propane would explode that
