    As usual, a superb restoration. David you consistently reach the very highest of standards. That grubby, shabby bench is now a piece that can proudly take its place in the very smartest of establishments. I am so pleased that there are still people around who take a pride in their work and build a reputation for honest craftsmanship. Love to gorgeous, lively Daisy.

      At our 45th high school reunion meeting yesterday, we discussed that we had lost seven male classmates in the last five years to suicide, So much has changed in the last 25 years with regards to men’s roles in our society, they’ve lost their identities.

    • @helensearle1896

      @@BadlandsGecko It's not that so much as that men have always had a higher rate of suicide than women - it's seen as weak or effeminate for a man to talk honestly about his mental health or admit to vulnerability. I think this attitude is changing among young people but among older men (no offence David!) it's still prevalent and so a lot of men are suffering who don't need to.

    • @johnthomson1579

      @@BadlandsGeckofeminism has dismantled patriarchy. Men have lost their role as provider and leader in home and therefore their identity. Coupled with divorce suicide is a result.

    Also, I’m a retired psych nurse who suffers from recurrent depression and anxiety. Therapy is essential for most people to learn to manage both conditions ❤. And sometimes it takes a while to find a good fit in a therapist. So don’t give up if the first try doesn’t work! God bless everyone and be well 😊.

    That is an oak railway waiting room bench made by Gaskell and Chambers in Birmingham , England circa 1880 . You can see the quality built into it that made it last so long . Beautiful restoration David . Hope it lasts another 143 years .

      Thanks, my customer has since told me that the benches were commissioned especially for the Snooker hall which opened in the 1920’s but may well have been made by the manufacturer you said as the snooker hall is in Stoke-on-Trent which isn’t too far from Birmingham. 😀😀👍👍

    Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful bench. I think playing pool, billiards, or snooker (I didn’t know it was pronounced that way) must have been a religious experience in the UK to have such classy seating. As a retired nurse, the first thing
    _I_ thought of, was that most of that was probably tar and gunk and was inside the lungs of the smokers... Not a pleasant thought. So glad most folks have stopped smoking!
    My second thought is that going forward, they're going to need an air pressure hose to regularly clean that _before_ it gets clogged with dust and skin cells, etc, so that no one else has to go through what you went through.
    Can't say this was my favorite of your video's David, but it again reinforces what a craftsman you are and how you thought ahead how to do this in a way that would make the bench really glow; and it does! Well done, that man!

    The letter X represents 10 years ea. The letter I represents a single year, so in my opinion it reads 32, probably meaning 1932. However, it could be 1832 but, the bench doesnt look that old to me but, I guess its possible.
    Of course, it could just be a code from the manufacturer that represents a different year.
    You did an EXCELLENT job cleaning and refinishing this bench!! Its beautiful! With the arch design on the back, I wonder if in its early life, before the snooker hall, it was a church pew? The design looks like church windows.

    Excellent job ; thank you for shearing it with us!
    Also, for shearing Daisy's always nice appearance.
    I = 1
    V = 5
    X = 10
    L = 50
    C = 100
    D = 500
    M = 1,000
    Thus, XXXII stands for 32.
    Regards!

    I like this kind of restoration. The piece is clean, solid, and beautiful, but you can still tell that it's old. And it's quite a lot of work to do that!

    Roman numerals: XXXII is 32. X = 10, I = 1. Add same size numbers: X+X+X = 30. I+I = 2. 30+2 = 32.

    Looks amazing. I think I would have been cross eyed after cleaning all the holes. When you started scraping off thee finish from the arms all I could think about was the amount of DNA that was probably in all of that gunk you scraped off. And that made me laugh. Thanks for sharing.
