I wasn’t able to get any speed out of rl19 or 4831, but Accurate MagPro gave me +3000 fps with 155 Barnes. Accuracy was just under a minute. 24” Browning barrel
Oops you have a 20” barrel, yeah I agree with Weatherby and you may not go over 2900 as Rogue Hunter has shown with his 20” 6.8. You could try superformance that is using pressure to affect the burn rate.
@@montanamusingskeep on making these videos I’m loving them one of the few people making videos for the 6.8 western… Btw earlier I did some research and I have to search up 6.8mm instead of 6.8 western for the bullets itself to pop up.. I’m guessing you buy just the 6.8mm bullet and then make them yourself that’s how you get the 130 grains correct? Cuz other wise it’s 162-165-170-175 factory correct?
Hey Steve, you have an interesting problem. Check out the Shooting times they have a great article on the 6.8 and have a great line up of powders to try. I myself have had good luck with Stabil 6.8
In one of my other videos, I tried H 1000 with similar results. 165 ablr's were going around 2640 if I remember right. I might try Grand next. Thanks for watching!
I recommend H4831SC before I knew you got a 20 inch barrel with your new gun. I also recommend H4831SC for it's accuracy potential... not it's velocity. You will need a much faster burning powder with your short barrel. H4350, N550, IMR 4350.
Try Winchester StaBall, either HD or 6.5. Use the Hodgdon load data, but work from the minimum charge. Hodgdon load data can get pretty hot on the upper end. Great video.
I tried H 1000, it was slow too. I thought maybe it was too slow of a burn for a 20" barrel. Reloading Weatherby suggested 4831SC. It was still slow. I'm wondering if I can up the charge slightly. I do have some StaBall HD to try.
@@montanamusings I worked up to 62 gr of HD and got an average of 2695 fps with a spread of 21 and STD Deviation of 9. According to Hodgdon I can go up to 65.5 and would have, but I ran out of 165s. I just got some in, so I’m going to work up some more loads. I haven’t tried LRT or Grand yet but I’m hearing good things about them.
I’ve recently purchased Ramshot Grand. I’ve read in some forums that it’s working really well for the 6.8W. I’ll be loading and testing those here in a couple months after the holidays and once the snow melts off the ground.
Seems like 4831sc doesn’t have very high velocity in load data or in your testing. I’ve got the same two bullets and a pound of Retumbo and a pound of ramshot grand. Hodgdon load data says max load of ramshot grand should push the 165ablr over 3k from a 24in tube. I’ll start loading in the next week and hopefully find some accurate and fast loads!
🕵♂️ OK, Individual Barrel Length and Barrel "Quality" Do Matter! 🤪 However, If I'm Able To Get - With My 270 Winchester and The 165 Grain Nosler ABLR Bullets - 2,925 ft/s in Factory Loads and 3,000 ft/s With My 270 Winchester Handloads...Then Why Save The 6.8 Western??? 😳
@montanamusings 🤭 You Do Know, For Those At Lower Elevations, People Can Now Buy a Faster Twist 270 Winchester, Get 5 Rounds in The Magazine, and Get Similar (If Not Better Performance, If We Are Looking At What Your Rifle is Doing) Performance Than The 6.8 Western! ☹️ So, I'll Ask You Again, IN ALL HONESTY... Why Save The 6.8 Western??? 🙄 I'm Just Not Seeing A Logical Reason To Do So! 👀
@RON-m8c, The reason they are coming out with a faster twist 270 is because of the 6.8 Western. They're actually trying to save the 270. You still have a long action with a less efficient powder burn. A longer barrel would definitely be better for me if I'm only looking for velocity. That's not why I bought it. It's kind of a challenge to see what I can get out of this suppressed 20"barrel. I'm thinking of getting a Seekins PH2 or maybe an X-Bolt long range pro with a 26" barrel. That would put some zip on it. It's good to hear from you!
This is all part of the fun! I like trying new powers/bullets!
My x bolt loves magpro
That's what I'm thinking, or Grand.
@ haven’t tried the grand yet. Love to see what you would get from that combo. I’m not running sammi specs on my loads
IMR 7828 SSC is a sweet spot powder for me. Hard to find at the moment.
I'd like to try Grand or Magpro. Thanks for watching!

I'm going to pick up some MagPro and Grand. They should provide me the velocities I'm looking for. Thanks for watching and the info!

@GEMStateFirearms, I thought about Superformance as well.
Kool content, please keep sharing I think I'd like to take a shot at reloading in the near future.
I think you would enjoy it.

I just had a viewer email me. He recommended N560. Realistically I'd like to get 2800 fps. Would you recommend N550 or N560?
@@montanamusings N160
I run n565 with 170 eol bullets, 20” barrel, 2822 fps ave.
@spencerhagen3294, thanks for the info! Every little bit helps, especially since you're running a 20" barrel.

I’m surprised the speeds are that slow, even with a 20” tube, should be getting better velocities
I agree! More testing!🤠
I'm using retumbo 24" Win model 70 155gr LRX @2857.
That's perfect!
According to Hodgdon you are 7 grains over Max, Hodgdon lists 2800+ with 55.8 grains, go back to the bench and check your scale
61 grains for the ablr's. 55.8 for the LRX's.

I’m getting right at 3000 with retumbó and 165 able when trying 155s I’m at 3150

How many grains of 4831sc for the ABLRs?
I have some of the LRX, but haven't worked with them yet.
Wow. They need more hp. My factory loads are moving faster than that and there 175 grain
I need to bump up my charges more and check for pressure. As you probably saw, my factory 170 ballistic tips were 200 fps faster.
