It's like realising Clark Kent is Superman, Alex Lifeson, Secret Guitar God 😂 These guys were never about showing off but all 3 of them are amazing and they pulled out all the stops for this show in Cleveland, the city that gave them their first big break. All of them pushing 60 at the end of a 3 hour show!
Working Man was their first breakout song from 1974. It was played on a Cleveland radio station by DJ Donna Halper and it got them their first recording contract. The reggae part was a change up after playing this song live for decades. The guys were pushing 60 here and this is at the end of a three hour show. The original Working Man sounds much different and it would be cool to check out that version as well. Cheers
Rush was having a lot of fun with this song, what is probably one of their most beloved songs to their fans. The original song was from their first album, with original drummer John Rutsey, and this was the song that really introduced Rush to the Midwest of the USA. I was in a high school R&R band between 76 and 80 in two different states, and EVERY high school garage band played THIS SONG! This is one of the very few songs that's been performed at EVERY Rush concert over their 40 year career of touring, for many of which, this is the final song of their final encore. In fact, this was the last song they played together on their final R40 tour.
Glad to see you enjoying this. Rush is the best trio rock band in history. A career spanning 40 years, 160 songs and 17 albums… Enjoy the ride. Lots more fantastic music ahead!!
Not only were they aged 56, 56, and 57 when they played this concert (as somebody else already noted by mentioning their respective birth years), this was also their final encore after well over 2.5 hours of playing! PS - That little bit at the end is from another legendary song from another Rush album. It’s Cygnus-X1 (and it comes in two portions - one placed at the end of their Farewell to Kings album and the other to start the following album, Hemispheres.
I only got to see them 15 times live, but every time was an absolute joy. A delight. Three of the top most virtuosos of their respective instruments. Pure talent. I’m so sad I cannot see them live anymore, but glad I have the recordings forever. Such memories. Such great personalities too.
Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left is a must watch. I too love live songs and of all I've watched, this is my favorite of any band ever. Get ready for lift off.🛸🛸🛸
Who needs caffeine when we have Rush? I'm watching this at 5:30 in the morning, and now I'm wide awake! The reggae bit was a nod to The Police, a British band that influenced their early 1980s music; for more performances highlighting this, I recommend Vital Signs from this same show, Distant Early Warning and New World Man from Live In Rio, and Digital Man from the Snakes & Arrows Tour. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
That moment when Alex was shredding and went up past the fretboard, right up into the pick-ups, THAT is a thing that I am surprised more guitarists haven't had fun with. Alex is such a freak, gotta love im.
I love your reaction videos, and I enjoy a lot seeing you as you discover this great band! Next live videos you MUST see from them are: 1) Best intro ever 2) La Villa Strangiato (exit stage left) 3) Xanadu (exit stage left) Great compositions and an incredible talent from this guys!
Great reaction. Remember with RUSH EXPECT the unexpected. Now You're ready for Freewill, the Spirit of Radio and 2112 (a 20 minutes song in 7 movements). Again great reaction
The reggae part is also a callback to the video intro to this concert. Before the band hits the stage there's a video you need to watch where the "band" plays several different genres. In this same concert Rush starts La Villa Strangiato as a polka. These boys played differently. Alex was also playing with pretty bad arthritis.
The reggae intro is what you do to keep it fresh when you’ve been playing the same song for 35 years, lol. Cheers! P.S. - The Police were an influence on these guys, and Rush have a few other songs that are a great reggae/rock fusion. Digital Man and Vital Signs are good examples.
Your reaction was priceless... Made me smile... Yes, Rush is amazing... Keep going and watch "YYZ from Rush in Rio"... I was there and It was awesome ❤
The reggae portion at the start was unique to this tour. The studio and other live versions are hard rock from the start (just in case you ever listen to another version). Also, the song ends just before Neil raises his fists...when they start playing again at 11:32, they are actually playing a part of one of their other songs ...again, just in case you ever listen to another version of Working Man. :)
if you want to see a really energetic guitar try iron maiden the clansman 2001 9/16 rock in rio. he dances, jumps up and down, runs around, throws guitar in the air. jannick gers also played with the solo tour bruce dickinson dive dive live no lies where he is climbing up on the amps. the rest are running around while they play, enough energy to power a city.
I give credit to this song for keeping me half sane for the god-awful 3 1/2 years in Hawaii. A band that played at a nearby bar/nightclub would play this and nail it. Giving me a reason to live. When they saw me roll in, they knew they were going to be "Working Men".
The original from the very first album, even before Neil was the drummer. This song never had reggae. After 40 years of live performances they changed it up a little on this song and La Villa Strangiato. You should listen to both of the originals, then watch La Villa Strangiato from this same performance.
How about some more music by YES? "Roundabout", "Close to the Edge", "The Gates of Delirium", and here's a good live version of "Awaken": ua-cam.com/video/nDXccU0xgNo/v-deo.html
2 born 53 drummer 52. lots of energy. alex plays with other bands and people, always in back quietly playing. seems to like to blend in not be the guitar god person.

Just a small correction; 167 songs on 19 studio albums...close enough 😁👍
THEIR VERY FIRST HIT, LIVE MORE THAN 30 YEARS AFTER THEY WROTE IT. RUSH!!!
With Rush be ready to expect the unexpected
You will love the video for RUSH - Best intro EVER!!!!!!!!!! It is a live version of Spirit of Radio from their 30th anniversary tour (R30)
Not only were they aged 56, 56, and 57 when they played this concert (as somebody else already noted by mentioning their respective birth years), this was also their final encore after well over 2.5 hours of playing!

Amazing 😍! Try Xanadu from Exit Stage Left album 1981! Another live gem!

Bytor and the snow dog 1981 is the best example detailing this band’s skill.

Again great reaction
This band is the kings of transitions , The Reggee part was just added for this concert
Epic Indeed. Amazing performance by a trio of 50 year old musicians at the end of a 3 hour concert.

Loved this reaction, it's what I watch for. This is my favorite version of this song. 😂
I am glad you enjoyed it jonathan. 😁😁👍

Welcome to the greatest band on the face of the earth! The 3 most technically proficient musicians in rock history! Keep going. Try YYZ in Rio next.
as you can see from iron maiden rock in rio brazilian audiences are over the top so no surprise they are singing along to an instrumental piece.
Your reaction was priceless... Made me smile... Yes, Rush is amazing... Keep going and watch "YYZ from Rush in Rio"... I was there and It was awesome ❤
I appreciate those kind words. I actually did a reation to YYZ. It was amazing.😁😁😁
they've played this song so many times over the years that it has evolved into this reggae beginning (they were always Police fans)
Next up: Rush - Best Intro EVER!!!!!
Now listen to the studio version. It will kick your butt also.
Love your enthusiasm :) Good journey...Peace!
Welcome to RUSH. You went down the rabbit hole with no return.
You should check out "The Spirit of Radio" & "La Villa Strangiato" from this same show.

Original Studio track sounds the best by far but this is 35 years later and Live snd still shockingly good
Saw this tour! "Epic" doesn't even capture it : )

Now for a completely new adventure try Natural Science studio version get ready for a ride fire fire 🔥, again Natural Science Studio version,
i've seen them fooling around alex playing like an old bluesman cough cough or doing country western sounds.
The reggae opening wasn’t on the original version, they were goofing around with the arrangement
That might be the best reaction EVER!!! Do not come out of this rabbit hole!!!
If you like Reggae you're be REALLY disappointed! 😂
First!, BTW 😊
My grunge band did a version called Velveeta Man but we just skipped all that unnecessary middle noodling bit.
2 born 53 drummer 52. lots of energy. alex plays with other bands and people, always in back quietly playing. seems to like to blend in not be the guitar god person.
Dude there’s no rule that says a rock band can’t play reggae.
Stop being so confused and just enjoy the song
