  • James Murphy was over 30 years old when he started the disco-funk band, LCD Soundsystem. This is the story of a man who was afraid of failing so he did nothing -- but dream big.

In this video essay I talk about the beginnings of LCD Soundsystem and the making of the following albums:
    LCD Soundsystem
    Sound of Silver
    This Is Happening
    American Dream
LCD Soundsystem sprung from fear. Let me explain. You see, in the early 2000s New York was going through a “rock renaissance.” Interpol, The Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were just starting out. But they were all very nostalgic for New York’s past, resembling bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads and The Velvet Underground. By no means did that take away from these acts but a young James Murphy saw it as simply following tradition. He dreamed of a different New York, one where the sounds clashed, new musical styles originated and the people danced. Murphy sought to reinvent New York’s legacy, but he didn’t know where to begin. Murphy was quickly approaching 30, he couldn’t sing that well nor did he look the part of a frontman.

I'm a huge fan of an interview James Murphy did with NME back in 2010.
"It's the opening track, because it has a three and a half minute intro... Uh, which is really really quiet. So, I hope people don't blow up their speakers, because it comes in pretty hard after that.
      ...
That's another thing, this whole record? Almost every song has something that's just waaaay too loud. Like, the guy mastering it, my friend Bob was like, 'you know, that thing that comes in the middle there, it's like really, really, really loud!' It's like, if it didn't feel really awkwardly too loud, it was all wrong. Because I always like that on songs, and I always wimp out. But I didn't want to wimp out this time. So that synth is *really* loud."

Conor Drake I always felt that had to be intentional... like “make them turn it all the way up so the drop hits even harder”

@@ErikFromCanada That's an amazing story. With all the hyper-compressed records coming out of the 2000's, this release real feels like a breath of fresh air. A tough decision to make as a mastering engineer, but it's absolutely perfect on the record. The anticipation of that drop in Dance Yrself Clean has to be one of my favorite building tensions in a song.

I’m always blown away by how predictive “Losing My Edge” became as its satirical relevancy has only strengthened in the past decade.
I have to try to remember how late in life Murphy got started though; not just with the band, but with everything. Thanks for giving me that reminder, I need it now more than ever.

Gotta go with All My Friends. I know it's a cliche pick but it's just way too good to pass up. I remember hearing the song back in high school and thinking it was pretty alright; coming back to the track and LCD Soundsystem in general very recently, the song resonated with me emotionally in a way it hadn't before. Having just finished college and not seeing friends as often anymore, I can relate to the lyrics WAY more than before and I figure they'll only get more relatable as I get older. Also, that piano.
PS: James Murphy has to be one of the coolest people alive (maybe even THE coolest in a post-Bowie world)

    • @Middle8
      @Middle8  6 років тому +15

He honestly seems like someone I’d wanna be friends with. All My Friends is a classic. When I first listened to Sound of Silver, I put it on repeat two more times. I listened to it all day and Someone Great and All My Friends we’re perfectly paired on the album.

    • @alexjay3980
      @alexjay3980 6 років тому +2

Not a bad track to be found on Sound of Silver; perfectly sequenced record, too. There's something so captivating about the way Murphy delivers his lyrics (whether he's singing or speaking); I can't explain it.

I saw LCD Soundsystem live last year, when they announced that they were coming to my country I went mad, and seeing them live is something else, even the people that didn't know them were dancing, from teenagers to grown adults making fools out of themselves, it was absolutely great.

Middle 8 coming through with another mastapeece. Dance yrself clean is prob one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. I as a person don't really enjoy dancing but once I hear that song I throw the fuck down. It's so beautifully constructed and flows so seamlessly through it's different parts that you wouldn't think it's 9 minutes long. Also shout outs to I can change, Get Innocuous, and Tribulations

I’m in love with the mini documentary you make! Your video on King Gizzard really turned me on to their music. I know you probably have a giant list of artists you’d like to cover, but some bands I’d like to see a video on would be:
    Beat happening
    Neutral Milk Hotel
The microphones/ Mount Eerie ( lot of good material in this one)
Guided by Voice (kind of goes with the whole don’t give up on your dreams thing)
    The Magnetic Fields
Loving your work, keep it up!

I have a hoodie from that Madison Square Garden concert that was worn ragged. I remember my mom went to see the concert, her brother/my uncle was working on editing separate documentary for them which was eventually canned so she got free tickets. I only realized it was an LCD Soundsystem hoodie years later and started getting into them. I remember always wearing the hoodie which was an XL as it was originally my uncle’s who was a big guy and people making fun of how big it was. Really random but honestly, this brought back so much. Wore that thing for like 7 years... I still wear it occasionally and it’s how my friends recognize me even if I haven’t seen them for years (happened a while back.

"I can change" was a soundtrack on Fifa11. A game I spent like 300 hours on. Played it on my Nintendo DS when I was little.
When I was shopping clothes a couple of months ago I can change was played in the store. Thats how I discovered LCD soundsystem

You condensed the entire history of LCD on less than 10 minutes, fucking amazing.
Btw, where did you get the footage from the recording sessions?

    Yeah
I love how raw, danceable, and funky their debut is.
I love how masterful, deep, complex, and perfect sound of silver is (thank you for the tin foil part, helps understand the name of the album)
I love how nostalgic, emotional, and heavy this is happening is.
and I love how exciting american dream was as it released, really going down town with its singles and just the overall feeling of my favorite band coming back from the dead.
cheers fellow LCD fans, keep spreading the stuff worth spreading in this world.

Man these videos are exceptional, and on a lot of my favorite bands no less! I was excited to go to your channel, but realized how few there are :( In your Mgmt video, you make reference to Merriweather Post Pavillion, which I was hoping meant you had a video out on Animal Collective as well. Never the less, Keep up the great work!

Favorite is of course "All My Friends". As he says....i was there...in the early aughts...in NYC...James was the DJ and and music that surrouded my new marriage, my group of friends. Wistful, crazy, dance-y and very NYC-centric. It felt like he was OUR music. We did end up going to the garden show but we didn't get floor tickets. For that reason, the show wasn't all that for me. Its the floor or nothing. I did see him at Randall's Island with Arcade Fire. That was absolutely brilliant.

I love the LCD Soundsystem so much! A bit more than The Strokes and Talking Heads. This is happening is one of my favorites but the sound of it is so danceable and electronic that I would die for it! Keep the dream alive to everyone that is still trying to make something great like James Murphy did before!
