Glad that you made it away safely. After seeing your full-speed version of the video, I think it's extremely possible that the shark saw you - not the fish onboard from 5 min before, as a cautious opportunity for a meal. Look again at the attack vector and think about what could have happened if you were seated in the opposite direction.
You're right, a few mins before the "attack" I was sitting side saddle on the opposite side the shark rammed, and would have gone over for sure. I'm no shark expert but the "experts" have said that its highly unusual for a tiger shark to attack that quickly without sniffing around. I guess we'll never know why the shark did what it did.
Okay I'm reading the comments now, so it sounds like he had brought in a catch, that would have drawn in the tiger shark. They hunt via chemical and electro vibrations.
@@sharaguchi1do you wash off the kayak, I take it you probably don't... If you're anything like me and my fishing habits lol I mean at the end of a season is different but just to take it out, I was theorizing if there had been any scent on the kayak from a previous expedition that along with a thrashing of a recent catch could have attracted the tiger shark to believe you were just a large piece of meat lol floundering fish flopping a hopelessly and when he got close and hit the plastic he got bummed out😂😂😂😂 I'm happy that you're okay, I take it you still are out there on a regular basis lol fisherman some crazy foos for real! 😂 rest in peace to my grandpa, fisherman from Norway and World war II veteran, a man of peace. With your paddle attached but floating to the side of the kayak, it’s likely the Tiger Shark confused that silhouette for potential prey sitting along the water line like a wounded seal or other sea mammal. Large sharks like Tigers, Great Whites, and others will often attack their prey from behind and under. And biting the paddle area mimics biting a seal or other sea mammal on their flippers to incapacitate the prey and prevent escape since Sea mammals get propulsion from their rear flippers.
I think you are a cool cat under pressure, kept your head, and remained safe, great work! I'm glad that tiger scumbag took a powder on account of you are not a seal. Great fish you caught also, looks great to eat.
The fish that was landed wasn't bled, and the way the shark attacked the kayak wasn't the way sharks normally approach fish that are being landed. i suspect that shark was scouting the area the wounded seal was in, and was making sure nothing took its kill.
Most breeds of sharks and especially tiger sharks… Are born predators. That thing took a bite to see if you were edible. Especially if it let you see it coming. if it was trying to scare you off would not have given up pursuit.

@@lullubelljingles9567 That's my paddle in the water on the left hand side. I put it in the water because earlier I was sitting side saddle on the right hand side and had just got back into the forward position with my legs straddling the kayak.
it wasn't an attack the way it approached your kayak nor the way it bite your kayak. It was more of a nipping/testing/checking. Secondly, if it wasn't testing/nipping then it must be trying to bully you away because you are competing fishes in that area. The shark saw you were catching fish in his territory. Believe me, the shark saw/smell/felt everything around his vicinity. Just because you didn't see the shark when you caught that fish doesn't mean the shark didn't know.

*Why anyone would fish in open water, in a kayak, is crazy to me* . I mean you got balls. I'll give you that. But, it's dangerous, for many, many reasons.
Kayak fishing offshore is dangerous for many reasons but attacks by sharks on kayaks is extremely rare. The bigger risk is getting flipped and not being able to climb back in, having a heart attack while separated from partners, not being able to paddle back to shore because of a weather change. I try to mitigate these risks.
@@sharaguchi1 Yeah man. I live near the Gulf Coast and I have friends who go kayak fishing in the canals and the marsh. But, open water?! Holy moly. The tide, shift in weather, hell falling out like you said... Be careful, bro.

I think most similar shark attacks like this, happen because there’s a fresh kill in the water or the shark is being territorial & simply defending all aspects in that surrounding area. Be it there’s a kill (Seal 🦭) or an abundance of food in that area….sharks are opportunistic predators, but not the killing machines there made out to be. They weigh up all aspects & looking at this particular incident…that shark most definitely was defending its kill thinking you were trying to mooch in on his hard labours 🦈 ❤
Tiger sharks are known for their attacks on humans and if you had fallen into that water when the sharks food was there, I'm afraid it would have been bad news for ya.
Nah. It thought you were a big fish coz you had fish onboard. They wouldn't try attack something bigger to ward it off, they'd just try get to the kill quicker. They're not hunting by eyesight, they using electrical field energy and scent. You were a big dead fish to it.😂😂
The tiger sharks in Hawaii, in this area have been seen slowly cruising around on the surface. Maybe they are looking for floating turtles that frequent the bay?
Just speculation based on what I've seen and heard. Friends who kayak fish the west and north sides of Oahu are followed and bumped by tigers on the regular. Getting rammed like this is almost unheard of.
