I'm going tonight to see UM at the Showbox in Seattle. I've seen Phish 16 times, and this is my first UM show, however I'll say that when Phish was in their hiatus, it was UM that finally gave me back the joy from a musical experience. I had never really heard them, though I caught a little of them @ Bonnaroo in 02. I really appreciate Jake as a guitarist, and he is really flashy, but holds up under pressure as far as I can tell. I'm not here to compare... Just enjoy the wave for what it is.
I was at this show and it was simply amazing. Out of the 30 shows I've seen this is one of the one I go back and listen to a lot. Wish I had a complete video of this show.
totally puts my thoughts into words. When somebody asks me what kind of music they play, I tell them that if I could define them, I wouldn't love them so much.
This was a great show. Me and my buddies through are sombreros on stage and they rocked them for the rest of the show. Its so weird how Jake is so underated as a guitarist. You never see him in guitar magazines or anything. By far my favorite guitaris and favorite band.
Amongst guitar enthusiasts he is becoming more and more well known and popular. It takes time. Especially since they are not part of the mainstream garbage music of modern times. You know. The kind of music that is offensive to the ears. Yea. That crap…
A lot of people seem to have a really hard time grasping this concept. I've had some great times tripping my balls off at shows...but I've also had equally great times going to shows completely sober. If you need drugs to get into music and dance and have a good time, then you need to find a way to connect with the music more. I've tripped balls at shows without even taking drugs. It's called being high on life...and it's pretty freakin sweet. :)
hey rockstar blaze, if i wanted to name drop i could tell you the bass player in my band for almost 30 years was sam lerner, roseann barr's nephew, thru' her i met the clintons, and a host of who's who types. Im 50 and have been gigging since i was ten. ive seen alot of good shows that have very little to compare to today, but the best show ever, without a doubt was early stevie wonder, whom i met, na-na.
are you serious? Umphrey's is amazing. I've been to 6 of their shows and I've never felt unwanted or that anyone was self conscious. Their concerts are the most fun I ever have had.
idk. I find myself able to thoroughly enjoy badass bands whether or not I'm on drugs. Sure...tripping at Umphreys shows has given me some of the greatest times of my life...but it's nice to enjoy music sober sometimes too. You take more of the songs home with you and remember them more vividly, at least in my experience.
How bout this...they are all great! They are different, so you cant say "x" is better than "y" because it all comes down to personal preference. Let's all just appreciate the music and be grateful that we have it!
fusion at its finest! is it hip-hop? is it electronica? is it metal? is it jam? LOL... no i am not asking this, i am stating all the dif genres this song segues through. flawlessly!
mjktrey hit it on the head, Ive seen both bands numerous times and I would say that Umphreys is the most technically skilled band. Any band that has signs for when to switch keys, go up whole or half steps, milk a jam,etc and can execute them without talking or really listening is amazing. And lets be honest Umphreys is that band, watch them communicate on stage next show you got to the talent is unmistakable
You have to look at UM with the following mindset: They love everything about being onstage and jamming with each other because, of course, they are all friends. Being a fan, you just have to enjoy the upbeat style of theirs and let the music take you for a trip. No comparisons need to be made, just enjoy their music and don't start arguments over it. UM doesn't want that.
I've gone to shows tripping and not tripping. I've gone completely sober. They don't make the music for you to get fucked up to. Listen to the damn music and dance. Um has nothing to prove since pretty much all of them are literally masters at their instruments. If you're going to hate, go listen to David Guetta.
I know what you mean man. But unfortunately, a lot of people will just look at the scene and lump them altogether even if they have completely different sounds and call them related. Phish, UM, the Dead, moe., Bisco, SCI, STS9, YMSB, all those bands have completely different sounds and styles but they are all joined together by sharing more or less the same fan base. I always found that to be one of the most beautiful things about the jam scene.
i agree sort of but i wouldnt say complexity and technicality are one and the same. i feel that technicality relies on more strategically placed notes which i think umphreys does a little bit of a better job with... i got an umps show tonight in burlington either way ... ill let you know how melted my face is when i get back hahaha... cheers!
i will add that phish is more compositionally awesome from start to finish of most songs, where umphrey's awesomeness comes from more individually sophisticated parts. that being said, i agree, i like them both for different reasons. oh yeah. umphreys got me on the metal + untz jams
Phish is more technical because they write very complex logues like YEM, Divided Sky and David Bowie. Both are equally amazing and dynamically complex improvisers.
@hubertrogers i do not agree. I speak of technicality as acurately executing the notes one attempts to play. Cinninger stuffs a boatload of notes into any given riff and nails them. Not nailing them by just playing them, but hitting them very accurately and perfectly. I mean that the way they play is more technical. Perhaps phish has written a more technical song, but the style in which they play is not more technical. It is looser and more abstract. especially trey versus cininger.
@Bonzoandthemadhatter Not raining down on you-but for the sake of discussion I think the dissonance and chromatism that Phish use while jamming is actually way more "technical" and difficult to pull off than sticking to the scale. Of course there's the issue of tightness vs sloppiness but that varies according to other factors.
hope for art in music, as someone whos seen brand x, kazumi wat on a good night, the dead(50+xs), metheny, chick electric, spread and phsh, yes, elp, carlos, weather report, pastorious, luc ponty, the dan,the allmans original line, and the jackson 5, and led zep 3x, and pink floyd animals, and marley, i can tell you, these guys are good.
to those debating the phish/um issue, ill start of by saying that cinninger is my favorite guitarist to listen to right now, but phish is being discredited here. um's jams are more formulaic and structured, giving jake and brendan an opportunity to shred with the band steadily backing them up. trey was trying to lead the direction of the music in many of their jams, and didnt have as much time to play "traditional" guitar solos. listen to 1992-1994 Phish - almost nothing compares.
Um . . . phish is a different, older band now. They're doing different things at their shows than they did when they were UM's age. But they have played longer jams than anyone. I mean come on, a 60 minute Runaway Jim?
thats a serious tossup, trey and page are musical geniuses, straight up. phish songs are maybe not as technical as UM's shit, but consider where the musical roots they were coming from (Dead, Allman, jazz) and the fact that; Umph came up playing phish covers. no phish=no um imo, at least not the same band and catalog as these days. still, i have always maintained that umphreys man-for-man is the most technical/ttalented band out there today, and will go down as a legendary group. Im a tribehead.
I love Phish as well, but you are right, UM is definately more refined. You have to put Cinninger and Blayliss up there with Jimmy Herring on the Jam genre. Trey is a great song writer but isn't in these guys league.
@MrOpenmind77 Lol dude "even though they sound like they need better compostition and song structure"???? You obviously don't know what improvisation is. Umphreys jams a lot, hence Umphreys fits the definition of a jamband. They're not just progressive rock. You obviously haven't listened to umphreys that much. take a loot at anchor drops.
bcbower you disprove yourself simply because Phish writes there stuff. Yes both bands improve but see phish live there jams are much shorter and after the structured parts you expect to hear. Umphreys has been known to jam longer as well play reprises or only portions of songs going into Jimmy's or straight up jams in the song. With Phish when they start YEM they finish YEM and you hear every part you want to from prevoius shows which makes pHish weaker in my opinion.
also moe. has been pretty stagnant recently, their new album wasn't nearly as good as the one umph put out, plus i've seen both bands in the last few months and umph blew moe. outta the water. i agree that once moe. goes on haiatus umph is gonna blow past em, unless moe. practices like madmen while on haiatus. it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out
@caelumborn Yeah...allowing fans to text phrases to a screen for the band to improvize off of is totally not innovative. I mean...all bands are capable of that feat. /sarcasm
What planet are you from? UM is a million times more talented than Phish. When comparing musical abilities and talent, you should be comparing UM to Mozart or Beethoven, not Phish...
I've met all these guys while volunteering at Summer Camp, some of the coolest people you'll ever meet.
I'm going tonight to see UM at the Showbox in Seattle. I've seen Phish 16 times, and this is my first UM show, however I'll say that when Phish was in their hiatus, it was UM that finally gave me back the joy from a musical experience. Did anyone else witness Umph's exceptional show at the 10,000 lakes festival this year? absolutly on fire!
I was at this show and it was simply amazing. Out of the 30 shows I've seen this is one of the one I go back and listen to a lot. Wish I had a complete video of this show.
This song song is what got me hooked on Umphreys 10 years ago #umphreys
Awesome Band. been into these guys for like 7 or 8 years they've really come into their own.
this 3x is so great and one of my faves of all time. Jake with the sombrero.. umph you guys rock
hell yea dude i was there!!!!!! probly the best concert ive ever witnessed...
Everything a good jam should be. Just amazing.
totally puts my thoughts into words. When somebody asks me what kind of music they play, I tell them that if I could define them, I wouldn't love them so much.
yea the show at higher ground burlington was amazing!!!
great as it can be
I love this so much. Talk about a jam.
Cant wait to shake the bones to this gem...
You are a badass and a true umph-lover for uploading these videos. Thank you!!!

pretty sweet band.. this video made me a fan

My favorite piece of Umph C:
LOVE THIS FREAKING SONG. sounds like they've changed it up a bit since the last time i heard it.
bad ass upload.
idk. I find myself able to thoroughly enjoy badass bands whether or not I'm on drugs. modern day lol.
these guys have been killing it for over 10 years.
How bout this...they are all great! They are different, so you cant say "x" is better than "y" because it all comes down to personal preference.

@BuKnAsTee151 he's one of my top 10 favorite (most creative) guitarists of all time.
yeah i was there and my face got torn off. long live the umph
double dosin' errrrtime. 8 shows
Jake is God, Brendan is JC, Joel is the Sun, Ryan is the Universe, Andy is the cosmic particles that put it all tougher, and Kris is the stellar BAND!
I've gone to shows tripping and not tripping. I've gone completely sober. They don't make the music for you to get fucked up to. Listen to the damn music and dance. Oh it is.
So is this Dallas or chicago??? Looking for chicago @the vic and it keeps bringing me here😮
I think UM already is the baddest jam band in the land.
I know what you mean man. But unfortunately, a lot of people will just look at the scene and lump them altogether even if they have completely different sounds and call them related. love the mexi hat on cinco de mayo!!!

where do i start with this band (preferably live)?
I think it was the name of a distant relative of BB's named Humphreys McGee. No matter the name, the music is umfucking-believable
@smokasomeweed did,,, it is...
@smokasomeweed it is man
Truth
jerry garcia passed away in '94 :(
but that doesn't stop jam bands from jamming!
RogueLeader1337abxy 95*
@Rcs52590 hahha wizard burial grounds for sure just gotta fasten your seat belt and go along for the ride
I think it is 59min. but who's counting
I love this song, but unlike pretty much everyone else commenting I neither smoke weed nor trip.
word
@mwyatt222 Name dropping is fun isn't it!!!
Phish is more technical because they write very complex logues like YEM, Divided Sky and David Bowie. Both are equally amazing and dynamically complex improvisers.
Umphrey's and Phish are both amazing, just different. Being a multi-instrumentalist, I do find Phish more technical though.

Check out the band "Audiobakery" if you're bored and/or wanna hear some great music.
Phish, what's that? UM - SBC!!!
@smokasomeweed it would be lame not tripping lol
in your opinion...
I think sticks and stones was amazing because moe. changes it up during every album, its all apart of their genius
@smokasomeweed Yeah it is, but beware of the DBK's and Wizard Burial Grounds because they might spin you the wrong way ;)
Wake me when something happens.
enough with UM vs Phish; they're both outstanding bands
Um . . . phish is a different, older band now. They're doing different things at their shows than they did when they were UM's age.
But they have played longer jams than anyone. I mean come on, a 60 minute Runaway Jim?
Widespread panic is so much better.
i bet everyone there was baked
.....Thats the point lol
Wish the biscuits came in on this one with buddha.
ya they dont have as much soul so they have to compensate somwhere, but they also havt been around as long
@slideon check your email inbox and prepare to be blown away.
@maxwellkelly Don't be a hater.

@dietzj16 Yeah just shoot me a direct message
@maxwellkelly obviously a coffee drinker, stop hatin on good music!

lol most people are
Ya comparing two COMPLETELY different bands is stupid, it always just end up in an opinion based consensus.
um no...why do u find it necessary to post such things in here...they don't even compare

Utopian Fir? different "movements" and always 20 minutes long like YEM

they don't, they're even better than phish.
hahahahaha
Mozart, phish and UM are completely uncomparable
improg.
@caelumborn Yeah...allowing fans to text phrases to a screen for the band to improvize off of is totally not innovative. I mean...all bands are capable of that feat.
/sarcasm

Ump Is SOOOO much Better than Moe. not even Close
But Moe Is Dank Too
