Sure. One thing to keep in mind of course is that any demanding physical activity puts stress on our joints, ligaments, bones, etc., so we always have to make the choice if we'd rather live a passive life trying to preserve our bodies as much as possible, or accept a certain natural wear and tear in favor of an active lifestyle. In this regard, karate is no different from sports etc. Karate puts quite a bit of stress on the knees, and practicing with a bad technique can definitely lead to damage. On the other hand, karate strengthens your glutes, hamstrings and hip muscles, and those are areas that should be exercised anyway if one has bowed legs. So depending on how you train, karate can be either very beneficial or harmful. If you focus on good, disciplined technique and correct movement and also make sure that your body stays fit, you can definitely train and profit from karate.
it did years of Shotokan, got mugged twice and realized it is a posturing, ritualistic art, excellent for body and soul, useless to face all aspects of reality,
in karate as in all fighting arts YOU must figure out how to apply it. Shotokan Karate is an ultimate fighting art. It works!! I know from my own experience. Maybe you need to change your attitude and maybe even your teacher.
@@markospapasifakis4210 I would respectfully disagree based on pressure testing experience in street and ring, only few arts actually consistently work, no matter the teacher or student, karate is one of the least effective, yet it does have some efficiency if crossed trained, but your experience could be different from mine, no problem!
@@OverSooll I have worked as a doorman at a rock club in Boston. Fights all the time. The knowledge saved me more than once. I was a cabby working nightshift. Saved me quite a few times. I have been mugged unsuccesfully. Our chief instructor and my Sensei's teacher was Sensei Yahara. Believe me it works if you train correctly and you have cultivated a fighter's spirit and put sport karate where it deserves to be. Sport karate is fun for the young ones but it only comprises, I would say about 5% of what the martial art is really about. Unfortunately, there are too many people posing as Senseis that are very far from what a real sensei is about. All you need to do is look on youtube and see the mess our art is in. The Eastern disciplines have long been represented by people of extremely dubious credentials as it is very easy to say you studied with so and so and there is literally no way of confirming any of the information they advertise. Just look at Yoga. Everyone has gone to the Far East and studied with one Swami or another but did they? Or did they go to a week long seminar and later state trhat they are a student of the Master which nobody has heard about? What do I know about Yoga and it's teachers? Nothing! You could tell me that you spent 5 years in an Ashram in India studying with who knows who and perfecting all techniques and I could not know if it is true or not. The same has happened in Karate whether we are talking about Shiotokan or any of the other Okinawan styles, Kung Fu or Aikido or any other martial art. There is a bloodline and a system that works and that can be proven. That is why the World Shotokan Karate Association and the European Shotokan Karate Association are so careful when allowing people to become members. You must be able to prove your lineage. Try mugging Sensei Frank Brennan!!!
