A stunning reminder of why Donald Smith ranks among the greatest tenors of all time. It was a privilege, as a boy, to be on the stage with him as, time after time, he delivered one magnificent performance after another - always glorious.
Shame, that I failed to connect this name with this sonorous, virile, beautiful spinto voice. Jewel to treasure, much better, than Daniele Barioni and other MDM-channeling Italians.
Actually he sang at the Royal Opera and at the Met, also in Mexico City, but it's a mistake to think he simply 'refused' the many overseas offers. There were many, rather complex, reasons as to why he spent most of his career in Australia. It's high time we honoured our greatest artists - those who chose to remain domiciled in Australia such as Donald Smith and Geoffrey Tozer - fully, free of the cultural cringe inferiority complex. How wonderful that such artistry was present in Australia , so often and for so long.
Just beautiful. As always you"'ve provided a hidden treasure. Can one find full length recordings of his work? Studio ?...or live? I would love to know.
There are two TOSCA live recordings, one with Collier, the other one with Stella. He recorded abridged versions of CARMEN and RIGOLETTO, both sung in English - and a complete CARMEN with a young Kiri te Kanawa as Carmen. Further there is a live ERNANI with the Sadler's Wells Company. Segments from a Recital LP you can find here on UA-cam. Type his name and you will find some more surprising treasures ... Mike

A giant among a long list of wonderful Australian opera legends!
. . danke!

What other tenor has - or could - or ever will perform Rossini's magnificent piece like Donald Smith? No one!
Rossini & Smith...terrific!!

Marvellous! But refusing to sing in Europe and America is no wonder that he was passed by.
