- Three pairs of cowboy boots were in my flooded basement and some were more moldy than others. In this video, I take a look at three different kinds of cowboy boots and the varying degrees of mold on each then I clean them all up!

the mold isnt' just the visible outside parts, its spores have likely penetrated at least a little bit into the leather. I'd keep them out in the hot sun for a while to try to dry out and kill everything in there. Condition them so they don't crack of course. For dark boots, or boots you don't mind getting darker, use a leather treatment that has pine tar in it, it's a natural antifungal. Hubards Shoe Grease is a popular one and works well but you can also make your own for a fraction the cost which is what I do.
This would’ve been a perfect Halloween video
It has never occurred to me that this would be a problem. Who knew hahaah Thanks for this entertaining video...hope you are doing well Jeremiah!
Cheers! Thanks for watching!
What a way to capitalize on a video.. man you are a natural! As always, your content is nearly impossible for me to pass up! I’m an old guy with lots of experience with boots and I really enjoy hanging out with you. Thanks so much!!
One more thing- thanks again for the recommendation on hondo boots. I normally only purchase American made boots but like you, I prefer all leather traditionally made cowboy boots and hondo has it down! I have a few hondo boots now and I’m about to add the hondo 7875 boots to my collection because I am in need of a work boot now. I’m tired of spending $200-$400 for work boots that can’t be repaired like the hondo boots can. Thanks again!
I might give them a little toast in the oven on a low-ish temp (like 150 or 175), just to make sure everything is dry and the mold is killed!
I have had this problem continually until I stopped storing my boots in their boxes. Those are contaminated. Spray the boxes with something like Lysol spray (or equivalent). The boots soles should also be sprayed. As many have suggested, they should be heated to also kill the mold that has penetrated the leather and stitching. A black plastic bag set in the summer sun works well. Wear and condition them more often and the problem will fade eventually. DON'T reuse the boxes until thoroughly cleaned.
Good call on the boxes! I threw them all away
I have thrown away a pair or two of boots for extreme mold. Great way to save a pair of boots. SOB= Save Our Boots. Thanks again for the interesting topics!!
Very educational, J-Craig. Thanks!!
Sadly, I had to do that once before. Live and learn.
Good tip on the distressed leather brush.
Cheers!
Although I don't have any mold problems with my boots.... Very educational & entertaining video. I just picked up a pair vintage Tony Lama 8590's. Again great videos.
I always like those Thursday boots
Definitely not the way you want your boots to look after pulling them out of storage. Damp places like basement are not an ideal place to store boots. Live and learn.
I swear UA-cam has everything lol. I have 8 pairs that this happened to. All exotic. Another problem is now they have shrunk up. How do i safely stretch back out? All ostrich and lizards.
Could you do a review on justin boots? Looking for comfortable boot for standing and walking all day on concrete. My Ariat Quickdraw boots aint comfortable on the concrete
Have the same problem but not because of any flooding. It's just the high humidity here!🤨
Btw, what I also do is spray the inside of the boot with Lysol disinfectant and leave it out in the sun for a while. Of course the leather needs to be reconditioned
Good call. Between takes I was letting these dry in the sun
Really like the twisted x boots, but my favorite was the brown pair! If you ever think of getting rid of them give me a holler
i can't store my cowboy boots in my basement because the basement of my house has problems with flooding every time it rains and it aint air conditioned and down here in alabama it's really humid in the summertime so it causes mold on stuff
Party foul 😂
For real!
...I don't think unless I'm wrong, that it's really mold because mold, it lasts for a very long time, you don't remove it like that! What you got out man was just a flood deposit or something...
Its sad boots ain't made like they're supposed to be nowadays i wish they were still made like they were back in the ol days.
Did Jeremiah say if the boots were submerged underwater while in storage? I learned lots from this video.
No not submerged. They were on the bottom of a storage shelf that was closest to the standing water on the floor.
@@JeremiahCraig I see. Thanks Jeremiah!
Moldy boots, never a good thing to find when you go to get your boots😢
Interesting to see how man made materials isn't nearly as effected as natural materials are
I have an issue with a pair of moldy cowboy boots myself but in my case they’re brand new but the outsoles are kind of moldy, and on the leather I barely notice a little bit of mold build up, how do you recommend me cleaning the leather so it doesn’t get damaged or change color? And would I have to condition it after since the pair of boots are new? Thank you!
better to use vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide - then leave them in the heat to dry out. discolouration is expected but a bit of dye can fix it. very important to condition (as you stated) the boot a few times over the next few moths. steam cleaning followed by a good dry will also kill of any fungal spores.
Why is hydrogen peroxide better than alcohol?
can i get a pair of boots 🦖
