I already have a huge 10’ tall leggy butterfly bush but it’s in an area by my living room window and there is room enough for another bush. I love these bushes, I can’t get enough of them. These and lilac bushes. Oh I adore them. But I do have a special love for my butterfly bush.
I have 16 on my property. I keep propagating them of all colors
You need to cut them back every year so they will be full instead of leggy
When I use rooting hormone I use a stick to poke a the hole in the potting medium then put the cutting in and push the medium around it. This way the hormone powder doesn’t get pushed off the cutting. Also, hoping that buddleia was just borrowing a recycled pot since I’ve never seen anything from those companies that wasn’t propagation prohibited. 😉. But it was a very informative video, thank you. I once took my daughter to Junior Olympics in Utah. I wasn’t there long but was astounded to see the amazing scenic mountain views everywhere, even when standing next to a dumpster in a fast food parking lot.

I've never propagated this plant before. Can anyone help me with the following question:
After watering, placing the bag over them, when do you water again? Or is a one time water all that is needed for the entire length of root formation. I've read it takes approximately 6 weeks for good root formation before transplanting.

hi, I transplanted butterfly bush and now it seems to be struggling to survive. one day the new growth is limp another day new growth is perky. today they are partially limp again. Should I keep watering or should I be careful not to over water as they don't like to sit in water. I am not sure what to do to help it fight to get established in it's new home in the garden. Yes, I know I didn't transplant at the right time but what do I do now.

can you propagate them in oct if so how would you do it?
I have three butterfly bushes in my garden two purplish and one white. They are prolific and self propagate throughout my garden but only the purple colored ones. Do they cross pollinate and in so doing is the violet color a dominate species. In a decade I have never seen a white one show up. Thank you for your reproductive suggestions and I look forward to your response. Also have seen apricot color but have never found one locally. Are they available or do they not work in this zone?
The white ones spread by seed also.
Trust me, I keep pulling up new ones because I have too many of them.

What does clipping the top leaves do
I've heard that it causes less energy to go to leaves and more to the bottom of stem , which will cause the roots to grow.
I know this video is 7 years old, but I’ve never seen a plant liner with Monrovia and PW on it. Were they once advertising together?
It could be different in other areas of the country but in my area Monrovia is the company that actually grows the plants while proven winner licenses their patented genetics to growing companies and allows them to sell them. All of the proven winner we get in our nursery is grown by Metrolina or Monrovia and the just pay proven winner for the right to do so.

Yes. From my experience, 10 Gallon pots, minimum.
Ours has been in a semi-large pot for three years and is thriving! Cut it back regularly
Can I propagate to the ground soil right away?
I am no expert nor am I all that well in the garden.
I assume One could go straight towards the ground, but doing so may require more attention to it from the weather outside to potential critters and illnesses. So by propagating into soil pot of sorts, it would be easier to care for & be mobile with until a mature state you would like to then move forward into the ground.
I've never seen anyone clip the leaves before , is there a reason what you do that ? Thank you for sharing your knowledge !
Cutting the leaves in half prevents water loss for the cutting (or so I have read).
Helps all the energy go into the growing of the roots and not into the leaves
Take aside a bit of that rooting hormone instead of dipping the cuttings into the whole pot preventing cross contamination if any.
WoW! THAT EASY?? I just KNEW I should have researched this earlier... I've had my BB's for 8 years now, & they've just NEVER self-sown as far as I can tell. I still have the same original two bushes (that I SCORED on, got from Kmart End of Summer sale for $2.00 each!) I was waiting for babies to take to the back yard which is where I spend most of my summertime, so wanted to have more Butterflies back there. Buuuuut, no seedlings have ever shown themselves. NOW I can take a weeee bit of control over Mother Nature, nay, I'll HELP her, ;) & try this method out this summer.. THANKS for the Very helpful video!! :)

jcofortco exactly what I’m gonna do. I’d so love to have this bush grow all over my back yard but it doesn’t, for the past 20 yrs it’s only stayed in one spot by my living room window. It does get pretty tall but that’s it, it doesn’t spread and grow in other areas like my milkweeds do. Milkweed I have growing everywhere, all over my yard, in between my roses, in odd areas. And I honestly don’t know where they came from coz I never planted a one. And there are now dozens. Last year I saw about 4. This year they’re everywhere. I let them be because I know they bring in the monarch butterflies. And that’s a beautiful sight to see.
@@ChildofGodforevr Does your yard promote self seeding? There needs to be bare ground for seeds to take hold. If everything is covered with grass or mulch. Seeds can't take hold.
A large butterfly bush will put out thousands of seeds.
@@ChildofGodforevr be careful with the milkweed, I've read they have a poisonous sap... even touching them might be an issue 🙂.

do the plastic bag need holes?
No, you want to keep the moisture in. Make sure you place the pot and bag is a shady area or you will bake your cuttings.
Can you propagate patent plants??
I think it's more of an issue if you are selling them, say a farmers market or as a business. There's no way someone would know if the ones in your yard were propagated, or bought from a store.
Not legally. Not for personal use or for retail. I think the patents fall off at 20 years.

I have NEVER gotten any "volunteers" from my Butterfly bush. Not a single one and I did look. It finally died after over 20 years. It probably was a lot older than 20, but that is when I moved into my present location.
I want one that will in fact reseed readily (preferably without my help) so I don't have to buy another one ever again and I can have babies to give away. What varieties are good for this? Supposedly they are invasive so maybe I got one of the politically correct, neutered ones? The hysteria over these things would have to go back quite a while for that to be the case as that would have been the Turn Of The Century.
Do they need another butterfly bush of a different variety like apple trees do to produce viable seed? Maybe that was my problem. No others were around in the neighborhood I know of.
I would like some of the natural ones from China. I have not been able to nail down what exact words I need to ask for to get such seed or mature or immature specimen.

The best way to propagate butterfly bush is by cutting the pieces into the garbage and throwing out the non-native invasive plant.
When was the last time you saw any Butterfly Bush growing wild along the highway?
Old Man from Scene Twenty Four I've seen it growing wild at Jamaica Bay Wildlife refuge and along Sunrise Highway on Long Island.
Well with all the Malls, Strip Malls, Bars, Fast Food Restaurants, Gas Stations and Condos in Long Island, I'd say MAN is far more invasive than a plant that actually serves a purpose in Nature. Man serves no purpose in Nature.

@Resurgens You should be ashamed - obviously not a plant person who likes to propagate plants to have more... I'm sorry for you - you are blessed with gifts all around you & It doesn't sound like you enjoy them.. You are missing out...
