16:00 Final Thoughts of Cape Verde & Learning about Morabeza
I knew Cape Verde would be special for me since in Part I of Cape Verde ( • Discovering Cape Verde... ) I discovered the music on the cultural island of Sao Vicente. But through that discovery, I literally learned so much about the country.
How the people became such incredible sailors, how the country resupplied passing ships initially for slavery and later for commerce, how the island has one of the most diverse populations as a crossroads of African and European identity forming a single unified population that now spans the globe.
Above all, I was so so fortunate to meet so many incredible people, artists, architects, musicians, and creatives that come from all backgrounds and are so proud of a nation that truly embodies Morabeza. I hope to return and see more of the islands (the volcanoes of Fogo, the beaches of Boa Vista and Sal, and the rugged, raw terrain of Brava) while enjoying the music, food, and of course the hospitality of the people.
In this video, we'll show you some of the most incredible places on the islands, from the stunning white-sand beaches to the dramatic cliffs and rainforest rivers. You won't believe what we discovered on our journey!
Make sure to check out Part I of Cape Verde which takes us to the island of San Vicente to discover the country's Cultural Capital and how the musical traditions shaped the world’s imagination of this great island nation!
~ Stay Curious. And I look forward to seeing you on my next Final50 journey! ~

Obrigado pelos vídeos maravilhosos do meu país, Cabo Verde, volte mais vezes.
Thank you for watching Edson!!! What a beautiful country!!!
at 4:03 you can see the mural painting of Roberto Duarte Silva, a famous chemist born in Ribeira Grande in Santo Antão Island, 1837 - died in Paris, 1889. He was a chemist first in Macao, then Hong Kong and then in Paris. Duarte Silva was presented with the Jecker Prize (Prix Jecker) by the French Academy of Sciences in 1885. In 1887 he became president of the Société Chimique de France.
In 1863 he went to Paris, and taught analytical chemistry at the École des Mines de Paris (now the Mines ParisTech), the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures (now the École Centrale Paris), and the École supérieure de physique et de Chimie industrial de la ville de Paris from 1882 until his death.
Interestingly, like Duarte Silva, I was born in Ribeira Grande in Santo Antao and I live in Paris and attended Ecole des Mines de Paris and and the École supérieure de physique et de Chimie industrial (ESPCI) de la ville de Paris.
Super cool!!! Thanks for sharing.

Portugal was in Santiago from 1462. The island was used as a slave stepover. Slaves spent between a couple of months to a year there to learn Portuguese and be Christianized and then sent to Portugal, Spain or Brazil. Some slaves escaped and their descendants are the "rebelados" and had their own village in the interior of Santiago
In fact Sao Vicente never received any slaves because it was populated after 1850. It was a stopover for british ships going to south America. There was a coal "station" where british boats would refill their reserves. To be more precise it was handled/managed by "british" jews from Gibraltar. From 1850 there has been a relatively large influx of jews from gibraltar, spain and Marroco (under spanish control) who settled in Sao Vicente and Santo antao.
What a fascinating history!!
@@Final50World yes, you can find jewish cemeteries all over the archipelago but mainly in Santo Antao, and in Santo Antao there is the village named "Sinagoga"
