    Can you make an updated version of this with better visual quality and a close up of you hands during the strumming techniques?

    I don't know if this is just me but i am having some trouble strumming upwards. i always find that my finger gets stuck on the 'a' string or when i go to strum down again my finger gets stuck on the ukulele itself. is it just down to practicing or is there something i can do to stop it?

      Just practice. Your body takes time to build muscle memory. Keep going slow and steady and speed up once you've got it down. Try a few different strumming methods. Maybe another feels more natural. I learned Hawaiian method from someone who uses their index finger. My index finger was terrible sounding so I used my thumb. Different strokes for different folks. Be patient and good luck with your ukulele!

      Colaris The way experienced individuals like The Ukulele Teacher strum makes strumming look effortless and so easy, especially when they strum so fast. And I think that after years of practice, and perhaps forgetting just *exactly* how it was in the very beginning for them, they themselves-at least many of them-start to take strumming for granted! In reality, strumming requires its own separate hours of practice; it can be tedious, noisy, and even make you feel incompetent, when you compare your moves to their gracefulness gliding over those strings up and down; but that's where almost all musicians have started. In short, don't think that strumming is easy; it can take a few days of at least 30 minutes of practice a day just to reach an acceptable performance and avoid digging into the strings most of the time...and again, that practice time is *just* for strumming. But with persistence, you can start doing what you see in this video.

    • @YaseenRocca
      @YaseenRocca 9 років тому +31

      Colaris Also separate practice of the "upward" strums from the downward strums in the beginning; like do 5 consecutive downward strums, then 5 consecutive strums upwards; maintain for 3 days or so, then move to mixing them to achieve "slow" versions of the patterns you see in this video.

    I do think my life has changed, in fact. Thanks for the tips. I find myself now using a variation of the claw strum, wherein I do the upstroke with the pad of my index and middle fingers (which are fairly calloused from playing fingerstyle guitar) and sort of let my thumb have a rest (which it needs because, as I mentioned, I play fingerstyle guitar).
    I am grateful to those who share their knowledge with the rest of us. It has helped me learn so much.

    I mostly prefer Hawaiian because it's easier and you get a smooth sound. Recently I've been trying to use a claw technique for better volume quality, but for the life of me, I can't get to work. My fingers always get stuck, which I have noticed to be a common problem among many beginners like me. Any tips?

    hey to all the people struggling with the claw method. this is what worked for me. i discovered this right after i cut my nails because i thought it would help): rip my beautiful nails lol. OK but i was having a difficult time with the claw it didn't sound right and my nails were catching different strings and my thumb wasn't working to strum up. my solution was to not join my thumb and pointer finger together i relaxed and separated them. i still used the 4 fingers to strum down and the thumb to strum up but it was a lot better when the weren't touching. i hope this made sense and help you!

    With the claw technique, I had difficlty with the up strumming as my fingers were getting stuck within the strings. I found it useful to release the fingers apart, and slightly angled my thumb so that it was able to 'glide' in some sorts across the strings. Kinda like changing to the hawaian technique for the up-strum

    I just got my first ukulele a couple days ago, and I've been having trouble with strumming, mainly strumming upwards. +Grace Haneline make sure you use a felt pick! harder materials have a high chance of damaging your ukulele over time. good luck!

      Izobel Holt In that case do what I do. Tuck your thumb nail under the index fingernail and try to keep any nail from sticking out too much. I helps for me as I share this issue.

      Izobel Holt my fingers are always held the right way as he shows them, but they get caught on the strings then!!! I have no clue what to do either!

    Hi Uke teacher! I downloaded your app even if I still don't have a uke. You're awesome, sir!

    Depends on budget, but I'd recommend getting a £30-40 soprano to start. That way, if you don't like it you haven't wasted too much money, and if you do you can upgrade.

    I am having SO much trouble strumming up! I am SO EXTREMELY frustrated! I can go down but not up! My fingers get caught in the strings... Help?

    • @sickboy932
      @sickboy932 11 років тому +11

      Only hit the strings with the op of your thumb (nail) during the up stums. Angle your thumb away from the strings where it will glide over to the next string. It takes a bit of trial and error, but once you get it you'll remember. Keep at it and pratice alot to build your muscle memory, this is the key to string intruments.

    I play with a felt pick. It's easier to do than the claw, and since it isn't plastic you can still control the volume. Plus it has a smoother, less twangy sound

    Enjoyed your lesson quite much. Not full of blather and useless bullcrap. Just straight to the point yet extremely easy to follow for beginners such as I. Plus, the accompanying graphics to follow along at every measure sets you apart from the rest making you one of the very best teachers! Hope all your other lessons are the same way in building a good strong foundation. If so, keep up the good work and please provide more! ;-)

    there's also a fourth way- my teacher told me to just use the pad of my index finger going up and the nail of my index finger going down, and if you're having trouble like getting stuck on the strings, relax your finger as of you're shaking off water!
