I agree that I don't fit an atheist mold either. I have my own thoughts and ideas that a lot of people think are still from my christian up bringing. I have thought a lot about it though. I have made up my own mind on issues and how I feel about them. Hearing that you feel the same way really does resonate with me. Thank you!
Cultivating peace requires getting to know yourself better and better. I'll be hitting 70 next year and still making progress. It brings not only peace but also immense joy.
I am in disbelief mode. Thanks Timmy for the words of truth. Holidays are a time of celebration. I and my wife still have a manger scene decoration in our home. It’s only a tradition to me. Nothing else. Peace and good will to all. 😊
To keep the peace, the other day someone asked me if I attended a church on Sundays, and I said, no, but I listen to a preacher on the computer. Hahaha, no I didn’t mention that you were an ex preacher.
Here in Norway, we grow up with the advent tradition. However, you have given me a new perspective on it. As atheist, it can indeed give meaning to me as well. And Christmas (jul or yule is Norwegian) is a much about celebrating the gathering of friends and family. And that winter solstice is close, we are REALLY tired of the darkness. Who can’t drink to more daylight in days ahead? God advent og god jul!
The flavor of Christianity i spent 20+ years in wasn't "good people go to heaven, bad people go to hell." It was simply "There are no good people." They taught kids that. Nice, right?
Please, tell me where all these good people are at. Do you think it's bad to teach kids the truth? Did you have to teach your kids how to lie, or take something that wasn't theirs, or to be selfish? I bet not. All kids know how to be bad naturally because it's our nature. You have to teach them to be decent, and it's hard to do because it goes against their nature. It's not rocket science. People in these comments seem to want justification on how good they really are. Well, you're not good. Grow up and act like adults. Quite worrying about your fragile self-esteem and deal with the fact that you're a bunch of wicked sinners, just like the rest of humanity. This is why the world is fallen. People not only lie to each other; they lie to themselves. You may have been in a church for 20+ year, but you weren't a Christian. If you were a Christian, you'd know that Jesus is the one that said, "Why do you call me good? There's no one good but God." Also, all have fallen short of the glory of God. Also, the heart is deceitfully wicked, who can know it. The only reason you think you're good, or anyone else for that matter, is because your standards of good are extremely low. On the other hand, God's standards, (and it's only His that matter), are extremely high. He expects moral perfection. Neither you, nor anyone else has ever achieved that, except Jesus. He wasn't self-righteous, like everyone else, He was literally perfect. Bottom line, you will stand in judgement one day. Your knee will bow, and your mouth will confess Jesus as Lord. The only question is, which side of eternity will you submit to this? It matters because, if you do it on this side, Jesus will take your punishment for you, if you do it on the other side, you'll have to take your own punishment. Big, big, very big difference.
When i let go of the existence of a eternal punishment firey "hell" (contradiction to the love of God), it was quite freeing.. definitely gives me more peace ✌️
@dmalane - Anyone who "attacks" ANYONE, whether Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim, IS NOT A "Christian" !! These religious terms like "Evangelicals" or "Christianity" mean absolutely NOTHING, as they do not "equate" to being a REAL "Biblical" Christian, which is someone who has received a "Revelation" from God that Jesus is the Christ. (Matthew 16;16-18) (John 6:45), something that Timmy Gibson obviously never experienced.
How funny! As an atheist, I feel seen. Halloween actually IS my favorite! For me, Halloween is all about the kids and candy and the fun decorations and my whole neighborhood pitching together to make a great experience for the littles. I mean, sure, there are adults who think of Halloween as an opportunity to for adults to wear goofy (or smutty😉) costumes and to drink or party or watch really scary movies. To each their own. I think part of the fun of Halloween is that it really is a holiday that can be as low stress as you want to make it. You can carve a pumpkin (or not) buy a few bags of candy to hand out and you're good. I go all out, but it's not expected of everyone. Christmas (at least for many people) involves a lot of planning and managing other people's expectations. Christmas can mean having to decorate your house, put up a tree and decorating it, planning a meal (or meals) to share, getting gifts for everyone you know (and some you don't), hoping you don't forget someone, wrapping the gifts, worrying about sending Christmas cards, and so on and so forth. And it can be a whole slew of social gatherings that you feel obligated to attend. Exhausting. Halloween (again, for me) is pure joy without all the tedious traditions or religious baggage to navigate.
I agree you can celebrate Christmas. I don’t think of it as a holy day, I just think about it as a holiday to spend time with family and celebrate family. And yes Christmas is a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice
Went to church today with my family for the first time in quite a while and they had a guest speaker (missionary from India),.who claimed his dad (who started their ministry) became a Christian when he was about to take his life and literally met Jesus and spent hours with him and met him again after his brother died and (after fervently praying with him) was able to ‘raise him from the dead’ and to this day, pastors one of their churches. This all supposedly happened in India. After we got home, my wife was like “what? you don’t believe him”?? I mean, these are some pretty bold claims right? It’s this kind of stuff that’s just,..creates more questions than answers.
With respect, was he actually dead? As soon as a person claims they were able to raise someone from the dead, my bull$hit detector would be sounding loudly. Think about it. It's not possible. I would have the same response as your wife.
@ correct,. My bull$hit meter was definitely going off, lol,. and my wife was actually on the defensive, questioning ME, like what you don’t believe this is true?? So, her and I got into a bit of a tussle over it. My point was just the ridiculousness of claims like this and we’re supposed to just take it at face value, lol,..
I have a Mother in law who claims to be a Christian, but causes turmoil in our family on my wife’s side. Claiming her daughter in law is a Witch, and can’t understand why her son doesn’t want anything to do with her. My wife is caught in the middle. Don’t know how to fix it.
As an Atheist, I experience peace because I have a "live and let live" attitude. I'm not instructed by scripture to hate certain groups of people. I also enjoy the Xmas season because to me, it is about family and friends, vacation from work, and eating good food. I've never really associated Xmas with god. Well, maybe when I was a child but never as an adult.
The word “shalom” or “salaam” both mean “well-being,” which is what I think of when I think of the word “peace.” Just like the word used for “salvation” means “healing.” I don’t get behind the religious tinge to words like shalom or salvation. But I will always get behind wellbeing and healing. Those two words aren’t religious. Those two words are for everybody and everything.

Inner peace in this world is achievable through self-reflection, humility, and sincere devotion. However, ultimate peace and salvation in the afterlife are promised only to those who worship the one true God, the Creator of all. To clarify, when I speak of God, I do not mean Jesus. While Jesus holds a revered position as a prophet and messenger, it is clear from both logic and scripture that he was human, not divine. You know this, as I do.
