It is amazing to see this film of Chalkhill Estate. I lived at 195 Redcliffe Walk from 1978/9 to 1980. I remember the first week end we were there and the reggae music blasting out across the whole estate. It was like having a sound system in your own flat!! From that moment on I loved reggae and dub. We had no real trouble while we were there. It had a bad reputation but I think it got worse in the 90s. I think this film will be more the mid 70s as some of the shops had changed by the time we moved in.

Amazing to see this. I grew up there, lived in one of the nicer flats across the road from the estate on the corner of Havenwood. I used to go to that launderette and Newsagents to buy sweets. My mum (God bless her) passed away in January this year. She lived on Chalkhill Road for 45 years.

1974 to 1980 lived at 75 goldbeaters walk and lived closest to the school yet late regularly😂. Lovely neighbours and Wonderful childhood memories. ❤🎉
All flats like these were great in the beginning and they really did try to address the problems of the slums they replaced .. no bathrooms, tiny windows narrow streets and back courts with no sunlight , no green areas for play , unfortunately it didn't take long for the cracks to appear ( literally)
They were poorly built poorly insulated and had expensive underfloor heating in the living floor only . Led to rampant mould and condensation in the bedrooms / bathroom . Then added to that no maintaince carried out even though it was known they'd be high maintenance .
The Labour government policy change from housing want to housing need in 1977, before then anyone could apply and was first come first served .
Change Meant point system being brought in , which although having good intentions, You lost the mix of tenure . Working / unemployed/ disabled / etc together .
The estates became unattainable unless you were a single mother , disabled , going through a crises , evicted from elsewhere .
By the late 1980's they were crumbling leaking and used as last resort housing .
Then you get people living there with no ties to the area who don't actually want to be there, see it as a stepping stone to somewhere else ( but the somewhere else had been sold to the tenants under right to buy ) so take no pride in the estate . So the spiral takes another downhill turn .
25 years as a caretaker in high rise flats so saw the decline myself . Not these particular ones but built to the same design

I lived on Redcliffe walk. At the bottom of my block was the health centre, this was back in 1970, by 1972 it was as rough as you like. Postmen could no longer deliver dole cheques,and tension amongst the resident groups had surfaced. I visited the month my old block was pulled down. Not too many fond memories for me of this estate
When kids could walk home from school on their own 👍
They still do in my village in Staffordshire.
Kids walk home alone from school in their millions across London every day, I see it so what the hell you talking about 😂
@@Taharqo.saved.the.Hebrew I think it starts at an older age though . In the 2000's even when I grew up it was normal to walk home alone at around 8 years old, now it's more like from maybe high school, Year 7.

I lived there, 1977, to 1980, WHAT A SH!!! Place it was, foreigners, every where, and where ever they go they turn it into slum, same as stonebridge estate, craven park, which is no go zone, even police will , not go there, they were covering up all the crimes then, local rag, Wembley obs. was told not o report on it, that was a copper who told me that, Chalkhill, became one of worst estates in London, to live in at one point, young women, was stabbed to death, 2 doors down from me, I remember them Playing Loud music, from Balcony, and white people shouting shut it down, as was about 2 in morn, mid week, and people had to go to
work, incl. myself. they ignored the people, so they got together, kicked there door in, and smashed all there decks, music up.
Was quite peaceful after that, used to take rotor arm out of car, otherwise car would disappear, they used to smash the lights on the stairwellls, which were covered in horrendous graffiti, and smear excrement on the handrails, as knew people would grab them, as so dark.
