2 things to note - FFG doesn’t own AMG - I think there might be some confusion there. They are 2 separate companies both under asmodeee. 2nd - I’ll agree that AMG likely didn’t want this to happen, at least not now - because they did still have things like the gunboats in the queue and a rumored points update in the queue for Armada - this was clearly a directive from Asmodee, and likely a result of the Embracer group fiasco - but they never really had the resources to do proper development for these games. I think the best case would be for a studio like FFG, Renegade, or wizkids (who currently have former x-wing/Armada devs on staff) to take the reins with some familiar expertise.
You are far too kind to AMG. They were, at best, indifferent caretakers who did the minimum and made changes no one wanted with 2.5 seemingly as an FU to the community. The community is terrific so the game will continue! On that, we agree. Thanks for posting this.
Just to restate it, this was my breakdown of how AMG has behaved as a business so far: ua-cam.com/video/wRCX0TrFLMo/v-deo.htmlsi=gVjsLV01m3l72veI - I still stand by almost all of what I said, with the exception of the big releases coming out. I still honestly think that AMG had a ton of development on deck, but wasn't able to get past some combination of production hurdles, red tape, and/or corporate obstacles from multiple levels up the chain.
Or Asmodee is the one that canceled X-wing but made AMG tell everyone. Why do an interview then unlist all your product 2 days later then 2 weeks cancel X-wing. I wonder when the final decision was really made and who knew when the interview was done.
No judgement there - I've been fortunate to have a play group that's moved with editions with me, but I can definitely see scenarios where I would have stuck with 1.0
Thank you for this video, your channel overall and your measured, positive, hopeful views for X-Wing. "I've been in this fight since 2012", I will keep my (way-too-complete) collection and keep playing/flying.
I might be off here, but I believe that 2.0 was providing the stakeholders with good money and players played the game in big numbers. After takeover by AMG and introduction new rules, playerbase dropped to 50% and never got bigger numbers. My look is the game has been slowly dying also thanks to AMG's design team.
It's hard to know without the actual sales numbers, but I believe the jump from 1.0 to 2.0 was cataclysmic. That knocked out almost all casual players and a good number of older players. 2.0 made some strong rules revisions, and won a good number of players back, but never held a candle to 1.0 in terms of raw sales, and really screwed retailers because they were stuck with mountains of 1.0 boxes they couldn't sell for years. Then... COVID hit, and basically torpedoed the whole thing. So we had two major dings before AMG took over. Still, AMG was on a path to making the game appealing for new players AND retailers in ways 2.0 never did - but then died in the crib. No new ships and not enough points couldn't last forever, and whether we believe it's straight production costs that never worked out or not, without new stuff it was only a matter of time.
😂 ‘nothing is over, nothing!!!’ J.J. Rambo I’m sure ‘we’ will survive. Terribly sad AMG wasn’t up to the task, Shatterpoint, Legion, and MCP are just too important!

It’s a sad day and I stayed with 1st edition and will keep those ships and ability to play it going. I have to say though I believe AMG didn’t care for x wing or armada. No new product and no news , leads to a dead game , then they shut it down because it wouldn’t sell. Always going to be awful people and threatening death over a game is beyond stupid but this is the world we have now. People don’t talk correctly to each other and are awful to one another and it’s not just a Star Wars thing or even a game thing it’s a people are too free to be a holes to each other thing.
It's all still fun, no matter the edition. And the cards and models are satisfying by themselves! I don't believe they didn't care, I just don't. Every single panel, every single product, they're a bunch of nerds that love games and Star Wars. I remember how excited they were to tease the Gunboat reprint - that's a fan-favorite that you have to be deep in the fandom to even know about, let alone get excited about. And then... It never happened. Which had to really suck for them too, regardless of the reason.

I have appreciated your optimism over the last few months and had hopes myself that better times were coming.... however, I have to now completely disagree with you about AMG as a company. Full disclosure, they did just block me on twitter after I made a couple negative comments, but I had already stated I thought that they were a horrible company before that. Their lack of communication, horrible marketing, community engagement, and lack of respect for their players has left a very bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. I have really enjoyed everything FFG has done to promote, stream, tease, and make roadmaps from their products. I was at Adepticon the last couple years, I did not enjoy Shatterpoint, I dabbled in MCP for a bit but not sure how long the life of that game has left selling the same heroes over and over... I thought about going big into Legion, but will not support this company any longer. If you have not tried it already, Star Wars Unlimited is really fun with a bright future for the foreseeable future. There was so many other options AMG could have done instead of the way they handled this and continue to operate.
I can't fault you for disagreeing with me on that, not in the least. One of my biggest frustrations with the announcement is it's *still* the Black Box it's been for years, to where we still have no idea at all what really was/wasn't developed or planned. It's up to every individual to insert whatever they believe, which sets up a landslide of more negative opinions than necessary. I have played MCP, some Shatterpoint, and a good bit of Legion. Legion is the most "my style," coming from 40k, but outside of X-wing the games I enjoyed most were the Shatterpoint ones. I still like the design of the game - but of course get that that's not everyone's experience. I also fully agree, the move to cancel development with so much left up in the air doesn't make sense on the face of it. I expect there's more there that's going to come out after AMG's run is complete.
I think your third option is the hardest ,as to revisit X-Wing at a later time will not work. This is because most people are going to dump all their ships and walk away, why is beyond me, but mostly true. I will be playing indefinity and will keep all my ships. I still think with the last actual ships we got was in 2022 and when the plastic ships stopped, thats when a new sustainable game started development and thats why we have not gotten new ships. When SW Destiny was cancelled we learned that they were already working on SW Unlimited which took 3 years to get to the table. Perhaps we are in this silent production lull and in a year or so we will get a big Gencon style announcement of a reimagined new space game. There has never NOT been a SW space game and not having hurts the SW gaming IP imo. Space combat is a core part of the SW story and needs something like it on a tabletop. Hope is all we have. Thx for your positive content.
I'M SO SAD😭 X-Wing is literally my favorite board why did FFG had to sell it i don't understand... Guess it's time to buy literally every single expansion :( Long live X-Wing!
The Internet as a whole has grown increasingly more toxic over the years and I can definitely point to a specific political demographic as to part of the reason why. Star Wars online especially has grown vitriolic, so I understand AMG's stance to protect its staff. I firmly believe they did their best with the resources they had available. I've seen the team in person and their passion was undeniable. While angry people online certainly haven't helped, I can only surmise that Pandemic + Asmodee business realities/choices = Death of X-Wing/Armada. I'm very frustrated by this cos I was finally going to make the jump to Clone Wars factions in X-Wing but with my own money issues right now I don't know how much I'll be able to get in the UK before it's all gone. I hope one day, X-Wing is able to make a return, that it doesn't stay dead forever when there was so much potential for the game to be balanced, for Epic ships to be updated and the game to hit its stride. I speculate we'll only learn of its possible continuation after this Asmodee farewell tour.
Well, there is some silver lining there in that we should see a ton of X-wing stuff up for resale ;) I've been holding out for a VCX and Saw's Renegades for ages, it may finally be time to grab them for posterity
