6:20 I started rolling! Looks like that wiring job was done by a chop shop in the 70's! It explains where all of the wiring harnesses went to back then! One day I'm going to build another rock crawling jeep and might need a harness... maybe you could send me half of that 20 lb. mess. Love these old restoration jobs & wish I could find what rolls through your door on a daily basis! Goes to show how revered you really are in your works. You're the man Mr. Davey!
Did some research about 2 years ago. I forgot the exact year but I can easily find out again and get back to you on that one. It's condition is similar to the one you have in the vid ( noisy gold foil pickps, nicks, and some paint crazing). It's red with white binding, missing pick guard, and trapeze style bridge. I think it was the top model Rocket in it's day.
when you come to put the wiring in, can you show the feed-thru to put the pots back in place? Its tricky on these hollow-bodies without access panels, but not many videos show it well. Thanks!
We also have an H53 we are restoring in the shop. As I said, I love these things. I was considering not doing a decal so I am very interested in seeing how the headstock decal comes out. I'll guess it is a waterslide but..... Thanks again! Very, very cool. R/S dm
By the hundreds of vids i've whatchs now i shure know how to set up my guitar !!!! Then why the hell am i watching every new one lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Cuz..... YOUR A NATURAL BORN ENTERTAINER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NICE!! I got me a late 60's Rocket. It's a double cutaway model similar to an ES335. Got it for a hundo almost 20 years ago. Good to see some around still. Do you think they have any sort of collector value?
Boy what a cluster f....! So is that how the pickup wiring ran originally, down through the F holes? I don't see any wiring holes where the pickups were mounted? Hopefully that bridge pickup just has a broken wire where the lead attaches to the coil.
You're a magician too ? Damn, you can really do everything :) Seriously, it'd be nice if you could show how you put them back into place in the following videos. Just curious.
Wiring?, Holy Gooch shit Glad its you sorting it out....:) Can you save the nasty p/up? Be pretty hard to find a replacement I would think. Nice axe! Great project Vid Dave looking forward to the conclusion - Good Luck
Gee with all the length of wire you were pulling out of there, i was expecting you to pull out a canoe! O_o that is a beautiful guitar, boy do i want a hollow body like that one day! After this is restored how much do you think it'd sell for? Hope all is well where you're at!
Dave all I can say is how can you let all these guitars go after you restore them? I'd be beating the owners away after fixing these beauties up...Especially with the work you do. Cheers Dave!
That Gold Tone (DeArmond Gold Foil) pickup is going to be a pain to replace. I own 2 Rockets myself and it would be a shame not to at least use something that looked right. I might try asking the person who made the pickups (a couple of videos ago) if he could rewind the bad one. Just a thought. They are getting 99-100 bucks for an original one on ebay. I own a 1965 H-56 and a 1967 T-36 (Heathkit version of the H-56 Rocket) both in mint condtions. My favorites! Respectfully, Don M
What I'm wondering is how the hell you're going to put all the switches and knobs back into place... Is there an opening on the back of the guitar or something ?
It would be more than worth your while to get a pro to re-coil that old pickup. If you can find someone you trust you could end up the everything original but the copper windings. The problem is finding some one local that can do that stuff. Vintage pickups are very desirable... and would preserve the guitars value.
It's kinda strange that one old rocket has to die so that one may live. What about the rest of the donor rocket? Is it so wrecked it couldn't be fixed, or what? smashed up maybe? I see guys on Ebay all the time taking apart perfectly good guitars to sell the parts. Sad, really. Question is, who's buying the parts and where are all these old guitars that are getting fixed?
Re-winding a pickup is not that difficult. Dave could DIY - there's a bunch of places selling parts, or he could just fabricate a new bobbin, etc. Problem is those Harmony guitars were basically toys - the pickups were never any good to begin with.

Oh boy! looks like at lot of fun! keep us posted on this, man!
Nice vintage guitar, cool video.
Great video! Really looking forward to seeing the progress!

Dave OL on your multimeter means 'open line'. There's no resistance or continuity through the pick-up - NOT overload OR short-cuitcuit. GOOCHED!!!

looks like a fun project, the gold foils are a hard to find item, sometimes costly also...

OL on meter indicate open coil -- not dead short, no ?
What a cool old guitar
interesting old twanger look forward to seeing next installment Dave.
Very cool. I have a Rocket III, triple pickup, '67.
That looks like a fun project. Are you putting it back to stock?

I had a '72 H56 .. Wish I still did. Hope to hear this baby sing ;)
Go for it, it deserves to live
Man I wish you live closer so I could get you to paint that spot on my guitar and have you do a setup xD
are those those "movie magic" replica knobs you mentioned in a video a long while back?
Boy what a cluster f....! So is that how the pickup wiring ran originally, down through the F holes? I don't see any wiring holes where the pickups were mounted?

Hey davey, ever have a Hofner Shorty in for repair? :) I'd love to see one worked on!
Have you ever considered making your own guitar/bass? You have the know how and the skills
Dave Where are you getting the new wire harness from?
You're a magician too ? Damn, you can really do everything :)

Is the whammy bar original? Why would you take it off?
Dave's World of Fun Stuff ever work on Harmony acoustic guitars?
those harmony dearmond gold foil pickups have recently became very popular. they will bring $125 to $150 each.
Big can of worms you got there, Davey!

Does it have truss rod?
How do you manage to lose the dot?
getting all that stuff back in looks like it's going to be a bastard...many beers on stand by.

Hey Dave!! More info on my red Rocket (ha ha). It is Rocket model H54-1RBS.
Everything and a canoe too

Rockets and sovereigns are Harmony's higher end models there usually worth fixing
Love ya Dave, but the "OL" on the ohmmeter indicates an open, not a short. Cheers!
whats that mean? i have one of this same problem on my Harmony H70 meteor Bridge pick up as well. Meter shows OL...
Harmony Rocket from the 60's- the first electric guitar Randy Rhoads ever played.....
good luck.
save it brother, its hurtin but can be saved
lol ..the Harmony is the same age as me ..pretty much same condition..Gooched ! :p
I agree I think the back pickup is fucked
wiring conundrum
what a neat old guitar
you'll get it brother
So far, I haven't ran into anything that couldn't be fixed, if the parts were there and in working order. Too bad nobody makes quality repops.
How much for the fake Bigsby?

You have to show us how you get the guts back in
Damn Dave....thought You would be cussing much more on this Rocket
Looks like your removing intestines at one point lol, surgeon Davey
Its hard to find a harmony thats even playble. The rocket and the soverign where there two best guitars there worth fixing unlike other harmonys.
I predict 3 or 4 episodes!
The last guy to work on that guitar must have had 3M stock....which would explain the tape! LOL
Loved the old condom under the Fakesby!.
Agreed

Great video Dave. But 1959 for me will always be the year that Buddy Holly died. Just saying.
davey,im probably wrong, but when this guitar was originally, were all the electronics installed before the guitar was put together? dick bailey
Looks like a Horror show to me.....
Nigga, my Stratocaster doesn't even have that much shit in it.
i will shoot you a personal email on canadaguitar .
KINDA LIKE TEN POUNDS OF SHIT IN A FIVE POUND BOX !!!!!
