  • When Uber exploded onto the New Zealand market it was celebrated as a disrupter, and hailed as a win for consumers. Every company wanted to be 'the Uber of X.'
But is Uber really a model we want other businesses to follow?
John Campbell talks tax, fair pay and drivers' rights as he investigates the Uber economy.

I love John Campbell. He's not afraid to ask and investigate hard hitting or controversial topics. I was upset when he left TV and went to radio, but I am glad to see One welcome him, as he was previously on 3. I always thought Uber was shady, and it's shocking to see just how bad it is for NZ. Thank you John for bringing this to our attention.

as long as there is a demand from the public for cheap rides , there will always be uber. The drivers are the victims of this kind of economy. As an uber driver, i can tell you a ride within the city limits is only about $8.80 and if you share with 4 people, it is cheaper and faster than taking the bus at $2 each. The public hate taxis as some taxi drivers have a bad reputation of ripping them off but taxis used to make a living as the fares were fairer.

Great piece John and the team. I have to say owning a small business in NZ is kinda just like working for Uber. I work 50-60hrs a week and don’t even make half of the minimum wage. You could do a similar doco on small business owners.
This isn’t to diminish the drivers situation but tonnes of us are doing it really hard in the country. I don’t know what the answer is. But it’s hard going right now for lots of people.

That's before Land and Transport decided to change and Amend the Deregulation's Act around 2015 or 2016. Which allowed Uber to start up here in New Zealand while the office is in Australia? Very good old boss I knew told me this He owned, His own taxi company in New Zealand before he died in 2016. God bless his soul.

  • @Rontheanchorman
    @Rontheanchorman Рік тому +10

Its a similar story in Australia. Ive done both Uber and Uber eats and on a good day youll earn $20 max per hour ($14 after expenses). There are drivers who are working 12 hours a day, seven days a week who are sleeping in their cars just to earn enough to survive. Uber has closed all their offices, they hide behind the app which they use to manipulate drivers into accepting trips where the driver is often working for free, even losing money. If you dont accept these trips or you cancel too many trips, they throttle your earnings by not sending you trips for up to one hour or more. They mostly prey on people who are desperste for money and they treat you like garbage. If you dropped dead tomorrow, they will just replace you with another driver as there is an endless supply. If they just paid the drivers fairly (which they easily could), everything would change for the better. The fact that they know full well that that they are exploiting their workers yet refuse to do this, tells you exactly what sort of company they are.

This is the tip of the iceberg. In construction maybe 40% of workers are ON CONTRACT not contractors. The difference is that a contractor submits a price under his/ her conditions where as a worker on contract works for a company full-time and receives no annual leave, sick leave, overtime or job security (we've run out of work means nothing for you next week)and still have to employ an accountant, pay their own acc and tax and yet 100% of their income comes from one business. It's basically self employed without any chance of profit.
Employers (and I call them that because they treat contractors like staff) have been getting away with this for decades and it's illegal for NZ residents operating business like this in NZ according to employment and IRD laws.

Use to do ubereats for two years. Was good back in the day but stopped as I was wasting too much time. If drivers become employees, uber is going to cut off heaps of drivers. Last year, late at night I struggled to get a taxi from my local hospital home. In the end I downloaded the app and got an uber. The guy looked wiped out, like he'd been working for hours. A few days later I was in a cab and heard on the radio about a crash the night before, it was the poor uber driver! He died working for Uber, a company that didn't give him basic employment rights. If you work full time in any job, and the company that hires you treats you like an employee; you should be paid as one. People here saying “it shouldn’t be a full time job” are missing the point entirely. Uber treats the drivers like employees. Uber drivers can’t change pricing, advertise Uber or even negotiate any single thing. So I say, if a company treats you like an employee, they need to pay you as one. Also, these same people will say McDonald’s shouldn’t be a full time job and only for school leavers…. Yet McDonald’s pays their staff as employees, because they are. That’s the point of this.

Very soon there will be a massive cull on all vehicles on the road , and the autonomous vehicles come in and boom they make billions in profit and we have no choice but to use their service. Uber charge the drivers 28% of the fare you see on your smartphone. this is too high. If they charged 18% then there would be more incentive for the drivers to do more trips. Also they could have a three tiered zone system for charging customers, like the public transport sysytem. The further you are from the city, the less comission a driver is charged and the fare is slighly higher. I the rural areas the drivers have to travel further to get a customer and return to a more populated area. This would make it fairer for drivers.

If Uber drivers are employees, then they should be regulated as Taxis. They should also be required to undergoing interviews, background checks, etc before being able to be an Uber driver.
This could very quickly go sideways for those unskilled people trying to use the gig economy as defacto employment because they can't manage to get a traditional job.
People wouldn't be trying to work Uber full-time if they actually had options. It was never intended for that kind of use. What do this union think they've got as leverage? If union members walk out what do they care, fewer cars in the area mean more surge pricing events.

Uber has takes a % commission to run their business, if too much go find someone else with less fees. Seriously question your judgment on this matter. How is this good reporting? Just typical John Campbell story to encourage complainers. Almost anyone with a drivers license can be an Uber driver but doesn't mean it's a good job. I has instructed my bank to cancel the fee. Their map directions are rat shit; They deviate from the shortest route; driver's will not follow passenger's instructions about the route because they fare is based on their devious longer. If all Nz employers have to follow the guidelines of employment rules.
Why any company who wants to do the business in NZ and don't want to follow the rules?
Why are ministers powerless? and allow these kinds of companies to do whatever they like to their citizens?
The last minister of transportation deregulated the taxi industry, which allowed anyone to charge whatever they liked.
Fuel prices are rising every 2 weeks, but the uber fares were still the same until now.
The customer wants to pay less.
The drivers want minimum wage like the rest of the NZ employees.
    Unfortunately
    The government
    The company

    The insurance companies
