  • Fungus gnats can sometimes thrive in a terrarium. They find their way in and are trapped, but the moisture inside provides them with a suitable habitat with which to thrive. Moreover, the moist media can help the population continue as they lay eggs.
    Fortunately, there is a simple way to control them inside a terrarium by applying hydrogen peroxide.
    Hydrogen peroxide, not only will kill the gnats and larvae thus interrupting their life cycle, but it can also help control any fungus which the gnats will feed on. Moreover, it helps aerate the roots of the plants.

    Tried this with my Cacti terrarium and it worked great! I diluted the peroxide though, since my cacti are still very young. Thanks for sharing this!

    Hi, I’m planning to use this in my snail terrarium, do you think it may be toxic for the snail?

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things-  Рік тому +1

      The peroxide would be caustic to the snail so I wouldn’t recommend it.

    It didn’t work 🥺
    *update* I did it a few more times and over the last few days they all dwindled off 😀 thank you 🙏🏻 🌿

    I have this green tree python I just acquired , made a full bioactive terrarium for him , idk if your familiar wit isopods but I have some in there , you think this will harm the animals? Thanks

      I don’t think they would. if you notice anything, you can always remove them but since they focus on the decaying matter and not snakes hopefully they will not bother the snake.

    Hello! I want to ask, if I have isopods and springtails in my Terrarium, would the isopods and springtails die from the hydrogen peroxide?

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things-  4 місяці тому

      I doubt they would be happy with the ph of the peroxide.

    I'm trying to get rid of the flies, but would the hydrogen peroxide get rid of the beetles and isopods in my terrarium too?

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things-  2 роки тому

      It likely will harm them so I wouldn’t risk it. One thing you can try is an open container of soapy vinegar in a location where the isopods and beetles can’t get to but where the gnats can easily find them.

      Old comment, I know, but for any future visitors with a similar problem - a product called Mosquito Bits is supposed to be safe for springs and isopods and target only fungus gnats and mosquitos. It is corn granules cultured with a bacteria that is consumed by the pest larvae, killing them. You can use tape or, if the terrarium is big enough, hang one if those yellow sticky gnat traps. It may take a couple of treatments and breeding cycles to completely eradicate them. I've done 2 treatments on mine and seeing a huge drop off of adults creeping about. My springtail population is still thriving and I saw a couple of baby isopods today, so I can confirm the product is safe for bioactive vivs and terrariums.

      It depends on the terrarium size, soil amount, etc.

    Do you know if this can harm my spiders? Gnats are everywhere inside and unfortunately my spiders do not feed on them

    i am a year late. my wandering jew is getting “stringy” as well. what would your next move be?

    • @Growing-Things-
      @Growing-Things-  11 місяців тому

      I would suggest pruning the stringy wandering jew first, then work on tackling the gnats. If you build a miniature vacuum, like this one ua-cam.com/video/rZCk-dOMcnI/v-deo.html you can suck up some gnats really well to expedite getting rid of them.

    your problem is your terrarium doesnt have a false bottom. you need a layer of rocks below the soil and some kind of mesh to keep the soil out, then any water that drips down will sit in that open space and eventually evaporate keeping your soil from rotting and gnats wont be a problem.

    • @Growing-Things-

      Hi Matt,
      Thanks for your suggestion. I'm not keen on using false bottoms in my terrariums as they result in a thicker area for the roots, and less area for the plants to grow in. Not having a false bottom works well for me as long as I don't over water.
      However, the real issue is that I had a gnat problem and they worked their way into the terrarium where they had a great environment to breed in. Since it's not a carnivorous plant terrarium they didn't get "eaten".
      Since I don't use false bottoms, I am unsure of how well they work at inhibiting gnats, but I would imagine with the humidity in there keeping the soil at the top from drying out, they can also help foster a family of gnats as well. Perhaps I should do an experiment.

      False bottoms/drainage layers are 100% not needed if you know how to make an adequate terrarium soil and don't overwater. They also create the possibility of excess water stagnating and growing algae.

      Even with a false bottom you can get gnats. That's the problem I've beed dealing with, but I will try the peroxide and see how it works for me.

      I currently have gnats in a big closed bottle terrarium that has a large base layer, gravel, carbon, mesh, new house plant soil that I believe already had the gnats. I have had two sticky traps in for months now and still have the problem. I seen this video bought 9% peroxide diluted 1 to 5 parts water , left terrarium to dry out even though have never over watered it, added peroxide multiple times now over a period of two weeks I still have the problem, even though I can hear the fizzing when peroxide is applied it doesn’t seem to kill them even spraying them directly, I have poured it all over soil, it burnt a few of my plants but no luck getting rid of the dreaded gnats. I’m going to try neem oil now. 🤞🏻

      Google -
      Neem oil is a natural pesticide that's pressed out of the seeds of neem trees. Just like hydrogen peroxide, neem oil can be diluted with water. Unlike hydrogen peroxide, neem oil solutions kill both larvae and fungus gnats and thereby speed up the process of eliminating the pests for good.
