    I JUST saw mold in my propagation box this morning. Perfect timing for this Jeff. When I saw it I took the one moldy container out of the grow box and also left the lid cracked some. Will see if I can salvage the starts that were just getting roots. If not no big deal. Nothing really exciting. So off I go to take care of this.

    Thank you for making this video! My 1 yr 3 months old terrarium just has mold recently.I just realized it today lol. I ignored that terrarium but it is doing fine, justa bit of mold on top some part of the soil. I contemplating to either buy springtails,discard it and remake it or using something to effectively get rid of the mold. This one is cost effective too. Your explanation also easy to understand and clear.

    I'm so bad about leaving extra soil out. I def need to work on that haha, you're right that sanitary conditions are better

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 роки тому +1

      Oh I do it too, it's a double edge sword bc if we put the soil in an air tight container then it can loose a lot of it's good stuff we want for the plants. However, if we leave it exposed then it can become infested. 🙄 most big company peat and coconut based packaged soils are pretty void of nutrients though, so with those it probably doesn't hurt to store them in something air tight.

    I have a Parlour Palm that seems to be happily married to some sort of white fungus in the root system. It’s been like that for over 2 years and the palm seems healthy. I’ve decided to leave it be as an experiment but it’s not a good sight. Thank you for sharing your ideas

      Not all fungus is bad! If it's been ok for two years and isn't causing any problems then it's prob just fine. 🙂

    Hello!! a very timely video! Thank you, just waiting for this!
    Two days ago I noticed a fungus gnat flying around my terrarium (tall glass vase with hole and stopper on top and extra hole on its side), then I checked the bonsai tree and it was loosing its tiny darkish leaves.. , the moss was blackening..so I took everything out (tree, moss, soil, add ons etc), washed and sanitized the container, put the lightly pruned (blackish leaves) bonsai tree in a little pot to dry off, cleaned the moss and sprayed both liberally with H2O2 which is just oxygen and water non diluted as I do with orchids. Was wondering about the moss which I have just started to use: it looked yellowish on top and blackened on its underside, I took off the black bits, rearranged it in a dish and cleaned it with rainwater which quickly triggered new growth.
    So, when the varying bits dry off I think I’ll let the bonsai soak in diluted H2O2 to get rid of the sticky old soil and get the terrarium going again with a better drainage system and adding wood charcoal ( is the plastic net above the stones of any use?).
    Well, it is my very first try with a terrarium so with all the cleaning business done I hope it settles. I had watered it with a dropper but obviously given it too much water.
    Really grateful to you, as I was using my improvised method and wondering whether it was OK.
    Thanks again!!! Very clever and sensible (not many terrarium experts on YT approach these issues).
    You’ve got a new sub, of course 😊

    Thanks for this vid. My first time on your channel. My terrarium is just a month old and I went out of town for three days. Came back to mold on the wood branch pieces that I added (after soaking and boiling of course). I don't think it's too bad other than that. So my plan is to just soak the wood in HP and go from there. Perhaps use the Qtip HP on the surrounding moss. Does that cover it?

    Non terrarium related questions, if that’s ok ... algae on vanda roots ... spray with hydrogen peroxide as well, or it doesn’t matter if the algae doesn’t affect nutrient uptake. Does algae affect the efficiency of vanda roots? Last year I tried to scrub the algae off with a soft toothbrush, but it was a pain & now it’s back (of course) - any thoughts? Tips? Or just leave it alone? Thank you 😊

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  4 роки тому +1

      There is some chlorophyll in vanda roots, so getting the algae off isn't a bad idea. I have however seen plenty of healthy vandas with algae all over their roots.

  • @basia3564

    I think hydrogen peroxide is just unstable mix of water and oxygen that decomposes very quickly after use and that means what you'll have left after a while is just water. So technically we could use it as a spray on already planted terrarium as no chemical would stay in there long-term, right?

    there are places in mexico where there used to be 1000s of air plants growing in the canopy and now if you visit those same places you can hardly find those plants in the wild because of poachers/comsumers that unknowingly pay the poachers. It is very sad, if you love these plants you want to see them in their natural habitat/ecosystem where they are at home and in balance with their enviroment where they evolve. please help us fight poaching, it starts with the consumer not buying rare and exotic plants, depending on the species more often than not they are poached.

I have a video ready for tomorrow (3/13/20) but haven't been vlogging bc I'm just laying around recovering so there's nothing to vlog and even if there was I couldn't edit the vlog in time to get them up on UA-cam on saturdays. I found raven zzs at a local grocery store for $15 from Costa farms...except it had mealybugs? White fluffy things. I said no thank you even though I reaaaally want one.
      Right now people in texas are absolutely freaking out & emptying the grocery stores. I'm like extra half gallon organic milk since I'm halfway through mine (expiration date in may), extra 12 eggs even though we still have 8 (I envision a lot of scrambled eggs in my future), broccoli to go with chicken pastas and celery since I use that a fair bit.
      We still have carrots, potatoes, onions and some leftover brussel sprouts in addition to a decent pantry (way too much pasta hence need for broccoli). Plus the freezer is full of frozen meat & veg. I probably could hunker down for 6 weeks without panicking. Even the cats are set for 4-6 weeks and I haven't bought food in weeks. I'd probably go stir crazy though...
      Hopefully with all major gathering spots closed plus 7+ days of rainy weather predicted, people stay home & quit spreading crud.
      And at least maybe people finally learned to wash their freaking hands! Clean your tv remotes, digital devices and light switches too!

    i compare buying poached exotic plants to buying ivory from an elephant or a rhino, its so sad. People assume that just because you can buy it legally that it wasnt brutally poached from its home. This is one way that species become endangered. Your best bet is to always grow from seed.
