Of course Prince fired Jimmy and Terry. These guys were threatening. They are beautiful hit Makers. Prince was good but not all of his female proteges were bankable.

The Time was the most talented band in the 1980s Funk/R&B. Look at what each of the individuals did on their own. Incredible.

Even though the _The Time_ was technically, Morris' band, it was made up almost entirely of Terry's former band _Flyte Tyme._ It was Morris' band, but Terry was _still_ respected as the band's functional leader. When Terry and Jam were fired, Jesse basically took over Terry's role as the operational leader of the band. Jesse brought in *Paul Petersen* (a.k.a. St. Paul), *Mark Cardenas,* and *Gerry Hubbard* to replace *Monte Moir, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis,* respectively.
Morris clearly didn't like seeing Jam & Lewis fired, while Jesse was already someone who Prince worked with individually outside of his role with _The Time._ During his Questlove podcast interview, Jesse indicated that he contributed to some of the tracks on the 1999 album, although he was a bit disappointed not to be credited. Aside from frequently not being credited, Jesse enjoyed a good working relationship with Prince until Morris left _The Time_ after the _Purple Rain_ film was completed, and Prince formed _The Family_ choosing *St. Paul* to front the new group. Jesse was not about to be a backing musician for a guy whom he had personally brought into _The Time._ Up until then, he had a somewhat close and fairly cordial working relationship with Prince.

I love and highly respect Prince's musicianship and creativity. However, there are too many stories to demonstrate that he was a tyrant and had serious control issues. Also, Alexander O'Neal's charge about firing him because he was too black to be the lead singer, is likely true. Prince like Michael Jackson had obvious color issues too. If you look at the women that Prince chose to promote, you see no women darker than him as a sign. Still, I absolutely love Terrry's class positive way of looking at a past bad stitution: "Prince did not fire us he freed us to our destiny."

@@joiisler8986 But it wasn't "business." As they said, he didn't actually fire them. He was jealous of Jam for some reason according to both their accounts. What's that got to do with "business?" No. He was an immature individual, that let his power go to his head. Though this is not an unusual thing, I personally am not going to make it seem like it was something other than what it actually was.

@@onlinesavant One thing to bare in mind is at the the time Prince fired Jimmy and Terry he was only 24 years old very controlling and insecure and immature…a kid! In his later years Prince had evolved into a much different person. Jimmy and Terry were obviously done a HUGE favor by being let go and in hindsight Prince was the one who suffer the loss. He took the power of “the firing” out of the hands of the bandleader which was Morris Day. Monte Moir left with Jam and Lewis. Prince chose their replacements..not Morris….long story short the best band Prince ever had in his stable was torn asunder. I believe Prince regretted it whole heartedly the older he got. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Morris Day, Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson all left and went on to be great outside of Prince’s shadow. The Time was clearly the most talented act Prince ever worked with.
