    Lewis and Clark's PCP was a .42 caliber that shot round balls fed through a gravity feed tube, loaded with a push-pull bolt that picked up a ball out of the tube. Air tank was in the stock. It likely saved them from several Indian arracks. It was a repeater which the NA were unfamiliar with and they didn't know how many shots the gun would fire or how many air rifles they carried with them.

    • @MrPanos2000
      @MrPanos2000 2 роки тому

      With only 2000-ish psi in the tube unregulated and roughly 500fps of velocity, I cant imagine it being potent enough to reliably stop medium and above game, or a man. Dont get me wrong, 18th century airguns are spectacular machines and I love them as much as any airgunner, I just find we overly romanticise them nowadays.

    • @MrChris7582
      @MrChris7582 2 роки тому

      @@MrPanos2000 it shot a 146 grain ball around 500 fps and made between 110-120 ftlbs of energy. this of course is not good if your hunting the way modern guns are used go go through the shoulder of a deer for instance. but you could kill a 300lbs 10 point buck with a well placed shot. it has as much power as some 22 lr rounds. although not thought of as ethical to use today to kill deer it will infact get the job done. they reportedly killed a bear with one albeit it was a black bear. an adult Male can weigh up to 660lbs. but 3-400 is the more normalized size for most adult Male black bears. so it should actually have killed that animal with a well placed shot.

    • @wildrangeringreen
      @wildrangeringreen 2 роки тому +3

      @@MrPanos2000 they were only able to fill their roughly 1L reservoirs to 800-850 psi. Their tanks wouldn't reliably hold more (being made from thin steel sheet that was riveted and soldered together), and they only had single stage pumps. On the Corps of Discovery Expedition, they took Elk and Deer with the large caliber (likely somewhere between .40 and .45 caliber) rifle, and small game with the small caliber (somewhere between .30 and .35 caliber). The Austrian Army adopted a very similar airgun, but in .50 to issue to special purpose troops, but eventually abandoned it because it was determined to be too difficult to teach their conscripts how to properly maintain airguns.
      What you have to understand is that we've actually gone backwards with air rifle design in the last 140 years. The reason why Herr Girandoni and others were able to get as much power out of a low fill pressure was by using a timed valve (valve stays open more or less the entire time the ball's in the barrel). Current air rifles virtually all rely on super high fill pressures and beating the hell out of the valve (some of these air guns are running 50lbs springs and 4 oz hammers lol) to get a tiny puff of HPA to get any power, they did it then with better design. By changing the pressures down to 800 in GGDT for my own timed-valve gun design, It shows you should be able to get around 640FPS / 131.8FPE with a .457 145gr ball in a 30" barrel (short for the day), 665fps/142.2 fpe in a 35", and 685fps/151.2FPE in a 40" (35"-40" were common barrel lengths of the day), all on 800psi. At 850PSI, your first shot (the one you'd use for hunting) would run around 701fps/158.3FPE out of the 40" barrel.
      If you were to somehow fit a bullet in a rifle like they used (bullets were only just starting to be used in rifled firearms in 1803, and hadn't become common yet), you could sling a 200gr bullet out of the 40" barrel at around 621fps/171.3FPE with 850PSI for the first shot. Timed Valves are the only way to truly max out the power of 4500-5000psi fills. Nothing currently offered by the big MFG's comes close. My design (still testing) bests Lethal Air's Custom Texan in output in .50, and the Zeus in .72 (though I think I will use it more with the 20 bore smooth and rifled barrels, I don't see the need for 12 bore, IMO), and is only 100-250fps short of many common mid-power black powder cartridges. I ended up building the barrels with integral moderators, it'll certainly damage your hearing otherwise (still 100DB at the muzzle unregulated with the 35" 20 bore barrel and 5" moderator, only around 90DB back by shooter's ear).
      The small frame version of the design (what I'm currently distracted with lol) seems to be able to 1080fps/103.8FPE on average regulated to 2900psi with a 40gr bullet in the 25" .224 barrel I currently have made for it (with the set trigger and decent sights I made for it, it's a terror on groundhogs lol). I kinda want to shoot a 17gr ball out of it to see what it can do.

      AEA guns are well made and accurate …. Aluminum and steel……some of the competitors are putting more plastic in their guns and they want much more money…….some are new to the game and they come out of the gate wanting 1500 to 2000 dollars for their air guns…..The price and quality is good for me…….I’m not gonna pay more for an air gun than I pay for a power burner…….but this is just my preference….I’m not going to tear down anyone else’s choice for what they choose to spend they should get whatever they like.

    Very impressive gun I love your videos ♥️ what makes it even more of a value 💲💸 stock it produces 400 plus FPE but very simply if you add a couple washers to the rear of the gun add more air pressure to the tank 4000 PSI, and add a 300 grain slug people are getting a little over 600 FPE talk about an "awesome value" in a big bore 💪👍👍

I own several AEA guns and about a month or so ago I got one of the Big 9s and the pull weight on my trigger is nearly 8 fricking pounds! That's EXACTLY why he won't talk about it. It was the video of him testing the big bore bullpup go back and read his answer for yourself. AEA big bores have the shittiest triggers of any gun produced. It's a damn shame because the barrels are very accurate. Instead of putting a bigger/better flowing valve in their big bores they just added a massively heavy hammer spring to gain power. I'll not buy another one until they fix this issue. They're that bad!
