Just a tip I found re testing paint colours, paint A4 sheets of white paper with the relevant tester paint and then you can move them around walls and rooms holding them up with bluetack. Sometimes if you paint directly onto the walls the patches can be difficult to cover up and if the Swatch is moveable you can see how the colour looks on different walls, the lighting both natural and artificial can make quite a difference depending how light hits it. Good luck with everything!
We all know how much you enjoy your projects, and we all know, as well, how hard working you are so this house will be amazing when you are done! Can't wait for the upcoming videos. Oh, don't forget your boys!!!
OK this is sooooo exciting! And again I cannot repeat enough that a brand new build would most probably have just as many “issues” to frustrate you. This is going to be fabulous. And the walk through is so nice🥳
A few pro tips: paint colour on INDOOR rooms will always look darker that what you imagine, so pick a colour sample you like and then go a shade or two lighter. Paint colour OUTDOORS will always look lighter than you think it will, so pick a sample you like and go a shade or two darker. Paint colour reflects off itself indoors, so if you paint all four walls in a room the same, again, the colour will look darker than you think it might because the colour is reflecting back onto itself. But if you only paint one wall in a colour and the rest of the walls are white or off-white, the single wall colour may look closer to what you imagined, or even a bit lighter than you thought it might, because it's reflecting off the white. Wall colour also is affected by ceiling and floor colours. If you have dark brown wood floors, going with a light colour on the walls (just a hint of tint) will look fresh. If you have a light coloured carpet or light patterned carpet, however, you can get away with a darker colour on the walls without the room looking gloomy. To create a focal-point wall, consider painting one wall a colour you like and the other three walls at least two shades lighter in the same colour. That will give the whole room focus and look planned, rather than one wall being a dark colour and the rest of the walls white (harsh and looks like a mistake). Try for overall blended colour rather than harsh contrast. For a super dramatic statement, paint all four walls a very light tint and then paint the ceiling a few shades darker in that same colour. This is especially cozy in a bedroom. Remember that the wall colour will reflect off the darker ceiling, so again, choose lighter wall tints than you think will look good, and you will end up with exactly what you imagined!
Love some of the color choices, rose pink, lighter sage greens, and cream beige, goes well with your color scheme in the kitchen, perhaps a one accent color looking from the kitchen to the dining room area but don't know how you would make the transition from the dining area to the living room. I feel like I am there with you, and so glad you are doing a proper job and not a cheap way out. Love the idea of the dining table. Can't wait to see the final reveal? Do you have off-street parking? Are chickens and ginny pigs coming with you to a new house? a cat? rabbit? Lovely! renovations ideas-love the archway! You need some new curtains (LOL)
It doesn't matter how well a property is checked out there will always be unforeseen issues. You are lucky that yours are able to be fixed quite quickly. When painting samples on the wall it is best not to write the details on the wall. To remember paint names I number the sample cans 1,2,3, etc. usually I paint a piece of white paper or board too so that you can move it around to different walls and see what it looks like in the light at different times of the day. I am sure it will look beautiful when finished as you seem (thankfully) to want to maintain the character.
I vote on the first one on the paint. That is the green we have in our bedroom and you will never tire of it. I smile every time I walk in. Happy for you and your cottage.
I have to say, I admire your positive attitude! It will be fully your customization now! 😂 I hope it goes well from here on out! (I also love the paint names 😛 and the "walls eating cheese puffs"😂) Secret rooms are awesome!
Clicked as soon as I got the notification! Love, love, love house renovation videos and can't wait to see more of this! Good luck though, it's gonna be one heck of a ride lol, but I bet it will be so fun to look back to these videos in the future once everything is done. ☺
Oh no I hope everything works out okay Esme sending positive prayers for ur beautiful cottage journey series 🎄💚🐴💚🎄❤️❤️❤️🎄💚💚💚🎄❤️🎄💚🐴💚🎄❤️❤️🎄🐴🐴🐴🎄🎄❤️❤️🎄💚🐴🐴💚🎄❤️🎄💚🐴🐴💚🎄❤️🎄💚🐴🐴💚💚💚🎄🎄🎄💚🐴🐴🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🐴💚
Awesome video! Hope everything turns out right 😊 we moved about a year ago and had to re do EVERYTHING we had termites and water damage to so and we still have little un finished things 😂 but i love my house now it’s definitely worth it! So cool ❤
This project will be so satisfying when the bathroom is done! For colors, instead of a pink, maybe A Hint of Violet 2114-60 Benjamin Moore? I first saw the color in a 365 square foot studio apartment makeover YT vid. and it looked so soft and versatile. It's light enough you can change the color later if you want.
A few tips: I also used F&B and LG colours but used a trade paint (Tikkurila) get your samples colour matched in the trade paint as there can be some slight colour variations. Also the samples are usually cheaper. paint your samples onto paper or foam board so you can move them around the room to see what the colour will look like in different lighting. Also, painting the samples on the wall sometimes you can see the outline/texture on it when you paint over it. So make sure you sand and sugar soap your walls before painting to ensure a good finish.
Great video, Esme. You have a great attitude for dealing with the unexpected. You will appreciate taking your cottage down to the bones as you will be secure in knowing that once your beautiful bathroom is put in there won’t be any leaks or water problems. It would have sucked if you just prettied up the bathroom and then the ceiling fell down a couple of months later. Your cottage is so charming, I’m sure you’ll find that doing this work now will be so enjoyed and appreciated for the many, many happy years you are going to spend living there. And you couldn’t have a better location, location, location since you discovered it was for sale while out on a hack. Very much looking forward to continuing updates. Thank you for sharing :)
When sampling paint in a room you should make the square as big as possible and definitely use two coats! Also sticking a sticky note next to it with the same so you remember which one is which! Goodluck with your renovation!💜
Love how you are such a positive person and don't let things get you down ❤️, 👏🏻 so excited about your walk in closet lol. Edit: Secret room?? 😮 🕵♀️🔎 that's even more exciting.
Kitchen area is pretty nice! Disasters turn into mini-projects. Remain positive and keep your focus. Look forward to the end result... Old cottages or houses have character. See, you found a hidden room. You would definitely not find that in a new build. Instead of carpets, consider hardwood floors. I like the Archive color for the walls downstairs. Lilac for your bedroom and bathroom perhaps.
Esme had improved over the years of her channel and i'm so proud she is such a happy funny person and I love her horses. she is SUCH a good rider and I cant wait for more vids!!
That's what I meant before. Totally satisfying 🙏🏻 Thank you for taking us with you on this journey... Looks great with the new door. And the bath room will be great too. If it's ready at the end. And I like it, that you will preserve the charm of the old house...
We are 2 years into our cottage renovation and only done 2 rooms completely! Every time you start to do something it uncovers huge horrors! We are now battling mould and damp in the front bedrooms! Buy dehumidifiers they have been great for us! Always look at the bigger picture when things get frustrating, like how lucky we are compared to others as it’s easy to only see the bad! Good luck I’m enjoying these videos! X
I hope and know you will fix this! I'm glad you enjoy your new house apart from the issues! Thank you so much for taking us along your journey as it's kept me busy all day! Thank you, Esme☺!
"The more we take things off, the more damage we find..." Welcome to old house renovation! Looking on the bright side: you've found out the worst now ad can repair it before the house falls down, LOL! Brilliant cottage, though! Love the garden especially.
I'm soooo happy for you, Esme! This is going to turn out fantastic, I just know it, we all do. We are still here to support you. And what an amazing home (besides the bathroom and carpet LOL)! One more thing: Please don't forget about the guys! 👍😄🥳
Bless you, that’s a lot to have to work with after just getting the keys to the place. I’m so thankful I’m working with a stable block in the future and that’s the worst of the lost for the time being. Best wishes and looking forward to what’s next, I think lavender would look nice in the sitting room.
Aww bless you! hope you’re okay and get your dream home sorted so you can relax! cannot wait, you’re doing great ❤ so happy for you but wishing you best of luck!
esme thank you so much for sharing! 🥺 me and my mum just bought an old farm to renovate and have the exact same issues, mostly the water in the walls. And this video helped us both so much to not feel so alone in the issues we’re facing.❤
Highly recommend one of the brown or beige ones for your living room. Its a room used so much, it’s important that it feels calming and cozy, so it isn’t a place you get a headache or cannot relax it. The lilac would be beautiful for the bedroom with the wall behind your bed could have tapestry with beautiful lilac and white in it behind the bed.
I think any home owners will agree that new or old, houses will always have something needing sorted! Once a lot of work is done you won't need to do it again though in your lifetime, so I'd try see it that way. 😊 It is such a cute home with a lovely garden!
You’ve got such lovely taste Esme! The place is going to look beautiful once you’ve got it all done up. Sorry it’s been a bit more stressful than expected at the moment but you’re right, it’s such a unique property and character is priceless 🥰
Wow Esme it's just amazing. It's awful when work is being done and it seems never ending but Yr home is taking shape and will look stunning when it's finished. I'm so excited for you xx
It will be so worth it when you are done with your home! It may take years as you move through but that is the best part of the journey. Your home will change as you change, which is super exciting. Yes, stressful and costs money but worth the investment. And new builds aren't worth it, your home is going to be magical.
I bought a derelict 100 yr old bungalow, it was totally overgrown and inside it hadn’t been changed for about 40 yrs , it was great doing it up but exhausting as well , but worth it in the end , so I’m loving this cottage series x
Herbs need to be kept in the dark ie a cupboard..light fades them and they loose their flavour. You will succeed in making your home amazing.. take your time..and enjoy the process..including the lows!..you can't change what will be with very old houses... its usual.. Once you start opening things..you discover more problems.. we had rats distroy 1/3 of our ground floor from the screed down to the foundations and our house was only 10yrs old ie new build. We only discovered this due to damp from a pipe leaking. It cost 17000 and 5mths work!..with 7yr old, 9mth baby, no stove only microwave to cook in the living room (the front half of the house needed ripping out and repairing down to the foundations). It was challenging.. but we got through it.
I love how you always make your videos so interesting. I can’t believe i have watched you for so long, even when i didn’t have a UA-cam profile! Keep up the good work Esme!
O wow, thats alot to deal with! You seem to be handling it in stride. As stressful and expensive as it is, finding these things now will save you future headaches and worse expense. As an American, it is really cool to see the older cottages. We have old homes here, but not like you guys do. I'm really enjoying these videos as much as your equestrian ones!
Hi Esme, with the paint situation the really expensive ones (2nd one you painted on) actually turn a bit greener when you fill a whole room with the colour also i love your vids. Congratulations on the new house💌💌💌💌
i cant wait to watch this vid but i can imagine ut wont be very good from your side of things but it will all be worth at the end of this series!!! Love you and keep safe with all your ponies!!!
I can 100% relate to your home reno woes! We bought a place last year (not a 100 year old cottage, but an older house) and there is always so much to do/think about! Plus all the extra little things you didn't know about that love to surprise you and add extra $$ to a renovation just when your bank account is feeling stable 😅😂 Love this series! keep them coming!
You will always find things when renovating! Don’t be disheartened by it. We’ve had the same sort of things happen in our first home too as we have been renovating. Just a tip with the paint, I would recommend putting samples in different areas of the house, ie in spots that are very light and spots that are dark. It’s amazing how different paint can look in different lighting. Also, make sure it’s completely dry before you make a decision too as the colour will change as it drys. We painted our walls a light gray. In some rooms it looks almost white, in others it looks blue, it’s crazy!
Hello Esme I am a huge fan and the boys have grown so much. I love all ur horses and donkeys and I love watching ur vids and when I'm sad u always cheer me upp
Oh, oh, oh, you should do two tone, with the darker color around the fire place alcove thingy 🤣 it would give the wall more depth. I absolutely love your cottage, old homes are the best, they have so much caricature. And I don't know about the UK but here in the US new homes are built quickly and cheaply with little or no real depth or beauty. Also, the "crack den" comment had me rolling 🤣.
OMG! Love your cottage it is SO BEAUTIFUL LOVE IT!! Esme!🐴💚🎄🎄🐴❤️❤️❤️🐴🐴🎄🎄💚❤️🎅🏻❤️🐴💚🎄🎄❤️🎅🏻🎅🏻❤️🐴💚🎄🎄💚🎅🏻🎅🏻❤️🐴💚🎄🎄💚❤️🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻❤️💚🎄🎄🎄💚❤️🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻🎅🏻❤️💚🎄🎄🐴❤️❤️❤️🎅🏻❤️🐴💚
Oh no! I hope everything will be ok Esme!! Though Im sure everything will be Esme-fied with awesome style and decor! you always make the best of situations! 💕💕
Honestly this is to be expected with such an old house, but even a newer house anytime you open a wall you open a can of worms. And you finding the problems now and fixing them properly will be a huge peace of mind. I mean this is a huge investment, best to do it right. And I have 20 years on you and I have to say I am proud of you. No matter how old you are getting those keys is a huge thing!
Hi Esme, when the your cottage is all finished, can you do another this Esme kitchen? I love your videos so much and can’t wait to see how it looks at the end . And also have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. ❤️
Hi did you know those testers of farrow and ball you can get them from B&Q for less than half the price they also mix the same colour for half the price too. I learnt that after buying so many testers from Farrow my painter told me also about the good quality paint from there and the same colours as Farrow .
Your cottage is going to look amazing Esme 😊 I can only imagine it was a nightmare when you found one problem but like you say it wasn't as huge as your bathroom!! Keep up the good work 👏
Omg Esme! I admire how positive you are even when things go downhill. It's a pretty cottage but omg I love the kitchen! Hope everything goes well after Esme ❤ your amazing and I look up to you as your an inspiration :)

Aww bless you! hope you’re okay and get your dream home sorted so you can relax! cannot wait, you’re doing great ❤ so happy for you but wishing you best of luck!
Kudos Esmé for properly renovating and saving a lovely 100 year old cottage. Hang in there and carry on. 💙🐎😎
I think the second green and the rolling fog are the best colors! And I wish the best for you and your house journey!
esme thank you so much for sharing! 🥺 me and my mum just bought an old farm to renovate and have the exact same issues, mostly the water in the walls. And this video helped us both so much to not feel so alone in the issues we’re facing.❤
I love your house so much and the colors was so beutiful they reminds me of you:) Its a bit like happiness to me❤
Highly recommend one of the brown or beige ones for your living room. Its a room used so much, it’s important that it feels calming and cozy, so it isn’t a place you get a headache or cannot relax it.

Going to make it look lovely. Looking forward to the next video on the cottage. Giving me ideas. I'll be decorating my bedroom. Good luck 🤞 x

Thank you for making your videos esme! You are a huge inspiration to me.
Nice to see your new project taking off, lot of hard work but it will be amazing once finished.

Im super exited for more of your house renovation!!!!
I AM SO EXCITED!!! ❤

Esme your kitchen is absolutely adorable 😊😊😊
