On paper, as good as a West German team as there ever has been. I miss the huge cacophony of airhorns at German games back then. Its all so boring now. None of that now.
I miss (W) Germany. Liberos, strong personalities and great talented players, players charging down the flanks, powerful physical strikers. Now we have weak Germans and non German thugs playing in the shirt and the team acts gay.

If West Germany hadn't eventually scored from that penalty against Malta, there's a good chance that with modern VAR it would've been retaken as the goalkeeper was way off his line when the ball was struck.
In this time West Germany had a couple of offensive players who were hardly used in the national team, like T. Allofs, Wohlfahrt, Kögl, Waas, D. Hoeness, Allgöwer, Rahn, M. Rummenigge
Well, i think M.Rummenigge was not good enough like Waas and Kögl. But there were other players, which have been totaly overseen at this time like Hans-Jörg Criens, Stefan Kuntz, Frank Neubarth, Frank Mill (well, played from time to time without luck in the national team), Michael Zorc or Fritz Walter (Waldhof Mannheim).

Only the miracle of losing to Morocco stopped there being a repeat of the match against West Germany in the knock out stages in Mexico. That being said beating West Germany in Stuttgart was the ONLY occasion West Germany ever lost a WC qualifying match. Indeed they never even lost a EC qualifier either before unification. As things stand now, Germany have only ever lost 3 qualifiers. v Portugal 1985, v England 2002, and v North Macedonia during the last WC.

I feel that West Germany were a little unlucky to lose the 1986 final to Argentina. On another day they would've won. It's interesting watching these games approaching 40 years (3 years time) on from the Mexico World Cup, I wonder where some of these players who played in these games are today.
As a matter of fact they were quite lucky not to lose more clearly as it was Argentina's lack of concentration that allowed Germany to level the score. Otherwise Germany were clearly inferior in that match. Argentina were a bit like in the WC final 2022 against France.
