    Another loyal Canon user is leaving, is Canon watching this? Great review Caleb, I hope to have mine done pretty soon.

      I bought my 6D a couple of month ago so i ll stick with it until i feel the need to upgrade. Meanwhile, I ll wait for canon's response to the GH4. Good thing is that will save me from going crazy on buying additional canon glass in case i decide to switch.

    • @guillaumeerard6
      @guillaumeerard6 10 років тому

      That being said, i am no specialist but the GH4 upsets the entire Canon lineup pricing, and by a substantial amount right? So if a response there is, it could canibalize their higher end products.

    I love this camera, especially with the Metbones for 35mm glass. Here is a quick test I did with a Canon 24-105mm L series lens.

    Really nice job on the review Caleb! Loving my GH4 so far but finding some funkiness on skin tones with most looking a little too orange or red. Haven't figured out whether it is the Cinelike D picture picture style but otherwise, quite pleased with that this little cam can do.

    • @dslrvideoshooter
      @dslrvideoshooter  10 років тому

      I've had the same weird color issues. I think it might be Cinelike D. I'll do some more testing.

    Nice review! The best I've seen about GH4! I'm looking a new camera for our vlogs. We are ok with our Sony a5100 but definitively we need a camera with external mic input in order to improve the sound. We have checked the Sony a6300 (no flipping screen) and the GH4, of course. I have some Canon lenses (24-70L f2.8 and 50mm f1.4) and I would like to use them with the Metabones+GH4, but do you think is it ok for vlogging? I mean, can the Canon lenses with Metabones autofocus and stabilize? Or do I loose control of the Canon lenses? Sorry if you talked about it in the video, but my English is really bad and I couldn't understand all the pros/cons of Metabones. Thank you!!

    • @LUPONELLASTEPPA

      According to Yuri Palma ( he use Matabones with Nikon lens), Vlog should be avoided if not an external recorder. He released Rome by bike, best GH4 video so far

    thanks for putting in the time for a monster review like this Caleb! I'd love to see some more examples of the speed-booster moire, I wasn't aware of that problem. Would you say the rolling shutter is noticeably worse than your 6D?

    Would you at least want a low to high impedence adapter if you aren't going to buy a XLR preamp interface?
    Has anyone tried this with a dynamic mic straight into the camera, if so how are the cameras preamps, was there any hiss? For example, a SURE SM57 plugged straight in or with the use of an impedence adapter?

    One of the best, detailed and well thought dslr tutorials i have ever seen, especially on the gh4. (Speedbooster and canon lens issue-) Content covered, spokes man, editing. A well argument based opinion but still inter-subjective enough to avoid the fanboy feeling.

    I am mostly a ground and aerial stills photographer and had to buy the GH4 for a gimbal on one of my drones. I use 5dmk3s for everything on the ground - but - once i started to get into the GH4 and buy the panasonic 12-35 and 35-70 lenses i was blown away by how versatile this camera is. I have come into video late in the day but I'm loving shooting video and learning the complexity of the new language plus final cut pro x too. Thanks for a great review of the mostly pros and the low light cons. Like you I'm now considering selling all my canon gear and going the panasonic route. If the GH5 has at least a 20mp sensor I think that will be the break point for me to do this. I took the GH4 on holiday with both lenses and a flash gun and it all fitted into a small bag, try doing that with my L series lenses! I'm now going to check out your other links - Nick

    I'm selling my 5D Mark III and 21mm Zeiss f/2.8 in favor of the GH4 with a couple of Voigtlander lenses. Main reasons are: 96fps, 4K scaled to 1080p, and the overall compactness in terms of battery, sound, display and pure size and weight compared to the MkIII. Thanks for the amazing Review Caleb.

  • @NationsCapitolMedia
    @NationsCapitolMedia 9 років тому

    Caleb-- Thanks for the review. One little correction though-- the Voightlander *OPENS UP* to .95, it does not *GO DOWN* to that number. When you are talking f-stops, the higher number is DOWN, and the lower number is UP. That is because f-stop is a ratio, and that makes the smaller numbers larger openings. That lens goes DOWN to f16.

  • @BrianWeith
    @BrianWeith 10 років тому

    Caleb, thanks for another great review. One question... In the DOF tests could you confirm how the crop factors affect the focal length and aperture? Please correct me if I'm wrong on this: In shot one, the 70mm @ f/2.8 on a standard adapter becomes 140mm @ f/5.6. In shot two, the 70mm @ f/2.8 on the Speedbooster becomes 105mm @ about f/3.2 (2.8 x 1.5 plus one stop). In shot three, the 35mm @ f/2.8 becomes 70mm @ f/5.6. In shot four the 70mm @ 2.8 is exactly that. I would love to see another test where the aperture and focal lengths are equal *after* applying the crop factor. Thanks again.

    When you mentioned the Metabones SB at 17:48 you said that it 'turns the m4/3 2x crop to an APS-C size sensor (1.62x crop).' From my research it seems that the crop factor is actually closer to that of a Super 35 sensor (1.39x crop).
    2x crop (m4/3) * 0.71x crop (SB) = 1.42x crop (m4/3 with SB)

    Absolutely loved your review, as expected. You really covered so many significant lesser acknowledged points like bringing back detail from overexposure, EVF value vs Canon options, flip out screen, compactness, speedbooster, voigtlander lenses, etc. . Only thing is I think it would have been nice to mention how pleasing the noise/grain looks at 800 and less (with -5 noise reduction) and that the crop factor is actually 2.3 and not 2.0 in UHD and 4K mode. 2.0 in 1080p

    Fantastic and thorough review. I'm a bit late to the GH4 party, but thanks very much for sharing your tests and opinions. I'm also tired of Canon's artificial feature restrictions and the GH4 has me seriously considering selling all my Canon gear. My hesitations are things like low-light performance, shallow DOF, and wide angle framing; and you've addressed all of these in a lot of depth. Great job!

    Excellent review.. in all aspects and with great depth. I have a GH3 and love it. It does all that I want (for a serious enthusiast). The GH3 is a lot cheaper (about $650 less with lens) and does all that the younger sibling can do. For most of us, we do not really need to shoot 4K for good videos.

  • @MagnumDB

    Awesome video, I really appreciate the work that you put into this. I've been seriously considering the Gh4 a my first DSRL purchase after having only used prosumer video cameras. I've owned both the Panasonic DVX100-A and the Panasonic HMC-150. It felt like a Panasonic DSLR was not an insane choice for my first DSRL. I did have a question about the audio and I in no way mean to demean this video, but there is a hiss in the audio heard mainly while watching this with headphones. I have the NTG-2 as well and the hiss problem fluctuates for me depending on the circumstances. Is the hiss audible no matter how you set gain in either the Wooden Camera box or in-camera levels? As I understand, hiss is best decreased if you keep the in-camera levels as low as possible and the mic levels as high as possible if available. It doesn't seem like the Wooden Camera adapter has it's own levels though. Thanks so much again for the video!

    Hi Caleb great video as always. I want to ask a question. I have a G80 and have purchased your guide which has helped me get the best out of the camera, but I will soon have some more money to either upgrade but selling the G80 and then buying the GH5 or I could keep the G80 as it has IBS and buy a GH4 as they are now great value. I do not make videos as a professional but it is a passion and everything I do is such as short films and Doc's. Because I don't make money from my work would it make sense to keep the G80 as it as IBS and use it as a second camera to the GH4 this way I will have 2cameras for filming great for films or just go for the GH5 I am confused . I am not sure if the GH5 is to bigger investigative for a person who is not doing work professionally and making no money. I truth I am thinking between the G80 and GH4 I should be able to get stable footage when needed and super slow mo and V

    Great video man! I'm leaning towards getting this but I want to know if this is a decent camera for photo because though I mainly want to shoot video. I want to still have some that I can take good photos with too and I know some say for best of both worlds get 70d but that 4k has won me over. So is this camera worth it for the photo aspect as far as wanting to take decent scenery or portrait photos?

  • @avarmadillo

    As a lens option I don't know why you didn't mention Olympus MFT lenses. I have two Olympus lenses, both 1.8, one 17mm, the other 45mm: AWESOME results with either, but both relatively economical. Of course, I use them on my GH3, but there should be little to no difference between the GH3 and GH4 in terms of quality. Also, the adapters for the Minolta AF lenses yields great quality and sharp focus.
    I'd much rather use the minolta Af and M lenses with adapters than the Nikon...but, that, of course, is in some degree personal taste.
    There's nothing like having the right tool for the right job.

    Thank-you Caleb...a comprehensive review. I had come to much the same conclusion having been eventually overwhelmed by my 7d, the wretched Z finder and the sheer bulk of the lenses. I loved the resulting images but the sheer inconvenience has been eroding my pleasure. So I have sold the lot. The Gh4 will soon be on its way....I already have a Gh2, some other primes and the lovely Voitlander f.95 ... so thanks for the heads up and I will follow your progress.

    Great review! I am looking at this camera to replace my aging Canons, but am affraid that the low light might be a problem...I do a bit of night time-lapses and need to often bump the ISO up to 3200 and sometimes even 6400...if you get time, can you try and shoot a night sky at 3200 or 6400 with a long exposure to see how much noise it produces? Thanks, and great review.

    • @CBSuper
      @CBSuper 10 років тому

      ***** Thanks! I think I will hold off for the time being. No rush. I do love the price point on the GH4, but the low light performance may be a sticking point for me. Maybe the GH5 will be a different story. I'm as tired of Canon as everyone else, but I can't wait to see how that Sony pans out.

    • @qwiklok
      @qwiklok 10 років тому

      Chris Blair The low light performance is improved with the metabones speedbooster that gives 1 extra f stop. F 2.8 becomes f2. F1.4 becomes f1 etc. That is worth something. I also noticed that the lenses are actually sharper than when uncropped. they say the edges suffer a bit - but that would depend on the original lens. Whatever the case, there is a lot going for it and low light might not be as big a problem as you might expect. You can always turn on more lights!!!

    • @CBSuper
      @CBSuper 10 років тому

      Well metabones is nice, but doesn't help as much as I would like. I will still need to bump the ISO up to 3200 for night time lapse. More light isn't really an option. But I am still waiting to see if anyone puts out a night sky test shot. I may get one anyhow, just to use for other things. I just don't want to change out all my lenses until I see what that Sony camera is capable of at higher ISO. Thanks for all the ideas though.

    Great Panasonic GH4 camera review Caleb. I bought the Panasonic GH4 camera and a Metabones Speedbooster so I can us my Nikon Nikkor lenses with it. I have't got rid of my Nikon camera bodies yet but I do love my Panasonic GH4 :-)

    Great review! Just purchased the camera but have been apprehensive about what direction to go with lenses - thanks for the overview. The speedbooster looks like it will be a must. I too am a loyal canon user in the midst of switching gear.

    Outstanding review. Long but informative and gives a good overall feel of the capabilities.
    I'm a Canon shooter and I totally agree with the "I'm sick of the Canon crap". It's like they have meetings and discuss how they will screw with their loyal clients. It's sad. This GH4 looks like an honest little trooper.

    I'm enjoying my GH4 for non-cinematic projects, like interviews and sports and some wildlife. But for my narrative, I still enjoy the full frame DOF and I like to be closer to my subject, because I'm usually in tight spaces, or I don't want to be too far from my subjects out in public. Also, I don't like ultra sharp for people's close ups, and I like the option for low light. Well, I still prefer my 5d3 right now, I'm kind of interested in the a7s, but only time will tell. Thanks for this detailed review!

    Loved your review. I've preordered the FZ1000 because it has a very good built in stabilization system, not in the gh4, plus a zoom lens with servo motor. What 's the camera cage you're using in the review and what cage do you recommend for a bridge camera?

    Hey... great review. Im.serously tempted by this gh4 due to its 4k . However I shoot stills and video for work and currently use the 6D which is one of the best Yiu can get for stills and decent for video.
    How does the gh4 compare for stills... the half sized sensor seems like it will just dissapoint for stills...?
    Also the other issue is using all my 6 canon lenses on the gh4!

I was thinking in 6D and try magic lantern to make some astrophotography timelaps but now im in doubt. The thing is micro 4/3 still dont do it great with hi iso´s .. What you think about it? i still have a cople of months to take a desition and buy a new camera.

    Thanks for this review. I am a ex pro snowboarding/skate photographer back in the film days. Shot Canon 5 and still have a couple lense from then - a f2.8 70-200 Tonika. BUT I want to take that skill set into short form video grapher.
    The slowmo of this thing is a HUGE must for me, as I want to shoot action sports, plus Image stabilisation.
    A question is what lense would I need to match full frame super wide 18-35mm, 50mm and 70-200mm - I am a bit puzzled. I like the speed boost converter as fast lense and short focus is a cool tool. Thanks mate.

    Can you explain what you lose capturing internally. Is it true the GH4 captures 4:2:0 internally, but 4:2:2 externally? How does the colour compare on each configuration?
    I am buying a Metabones Smart Adaptor for Canon EF lenses to Micro four thirds mount. On their website this is listed at $US399, but now they have upped their price to $US599. No supplier in Australia sells these. They have to be ordered in especially.

Yes, there are nany other units out there that can crush it, but if you really no your lighting and push this thing to its limits, i think its still relavent in 21. I have an old but still functional digital light meter that I used in my
    still photograhy days decades ago, a Sekonic digi lite F 328. Whenever
    I get a gh4/5 I plan to use the Metabones Speed Booster xl which adds
    one and a third stop of light. I like to set my exposures manually.
    Assuming I have a gh4/5 set at iso 400 (default I think?), shouldn't I
    set my hand held meter at iso 1000 to compensate for the extra 1 1/3
    stops of light via the metabones? Excuse my ignorance as
    I have never used a digital camera of any type in my life other than
    my iphone, so if I'm metering manually with a hand held meter, does it
    matter what the Lumix iso is set for? I'm coming from a background
    where the iso setting on a manual camera is moot if using a separate
    light meter, and I'm thinking that what I have the gh4 iso setting at,
    that it will affect the noise of the image or video. Thanks.

    Does the GH4 have a focus peaking or targeting center that turns green when in you're focusing in video? I'm planning on trading in most to all my Sony Gear. I'm just so use to focus peaking on the Sony A77. Also, is there a metabones adapter for Sony Alpha to M4/3? I want to use my A-Mount Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 on the GH4. I want be wide enough while using my Glidecam HD4000. Thanks!!

    Thank you for this detailed review. Im one of those guys who is just getting into both videography and photography and I am ready to buy high end gear. I already have a successful youtube channel (non camera related) and I want to upgrade my production value with slow mo and shallow DOF. My friend who is a Canon sports shooter tried to sell me his 70D and explain to me that its really all about the lenses and that Canon has the largest catalog of leneses. But I just need a good run and gun trade show event shooter camera and I think the GH4 fits my needs. Your video really reinforced my decision. Thanks. Btw what cage was that?

    Hi Caleb. Love your videos dude! I am thinking in getting the gh4 but I don't have lots of money. I was thinking in getring a metabones speedbooster or other speedbooster alternative and a vintage nikkor zoom lens or a couple of primes until I save up enough money for a Sigma 18-35mm or a nikon 17-35mm. Can you use old nikkor lenses with the speedbooster or just with the dummy adaptors. Do you think a speedbooster with a vintage nikkor lens would make a good combo? Thanks. Keep up with the awesome contet! :)

  • @srobart
    @srobart 10 років тому

    I think you made a little flub up when talking about the lenses. The reason that the 12-35mm is so small is because it's equivalent to a 24-70mm f/5.6 on full-frame. When you convert the focal length to full-frame equivalent, you also must convert the aperture. A 24-70mm f/2.8 is a certain size because it has to let in enough light to be a true 2.8 aperture lens. If Nikon/Canon made a 24-70mm f/5.6, it would be identical size to the 12-35mm f/2.8 (all other things being equal). The kit lenses are so small because they have higher apertures. Higher apertures allow for smaller lenses because they don't have to let in as much light. It's why the 400mm f/5.6 from Canon is so much smaller than the 400mm f/2.8 from Canon.
    You're not the only one to make this mistake though. In fact, I did it myself for a very long time. We just have to learn that when we are talking about full-frame equivalents from MFT, to double the aperture too, in addition to the focal length.
    Beyond that, this is tied with Dave Dougdale's and Philip Bloom's review for the best GH4 review of all time. Between the three of you, I learned everything I need to know about the camera. I do hope you will also be doing a review on the A7S, as I am currently kind of stuck as far as which camera to buy (both Dougdale and Bloom are working on their reviews currently). I love the great detail and 4K of the GH4, but the low light ability and S-Log of the A7S is really appealing too. It's both a blessing and a curse that both of them came out at about the same time. And to make matters worse, the BMPCC has dropped to $495 for the next month too. I'm currently using a D800 and I really love the image it gives 99% of the time, but there are a few moire/aliasing issues which I am sooooo tired of seeing. I just wish one camera manufacturer would FIX the problem so that we never had to worry about it ever again. Just ONE camera that's perfect in every way...I don't think that's too much to ask. ;)
