      I had fun in basic (Army). I kept out of the spotlight and did what I was told. They ended up making me a platoon leader for almost 5 weeks when everyone else was only 3. It was a great experience.

    As someone has already mentioned, active duty has both guaranteed jobs and open contracts. I went in as an open mechanic which basically meant I'm guaranteed a job from the mechanical field. Week 4 of boot camp (it's been 15yrs so my memory is probably a bit off) those with non guaranteed jobs go to choose a job. You pick 8 jobs, putting them from your favorite to your least favorite. Week 7 of boot camp is when you find out what job you got. I got my #1 choice. Most ppl got one of their top 3 choices

    I want to thank you Aunie for your upbeat and very positive video about your experiences with the ID ANG. You reminded me of what it was that I had loved about my time in the ANG, I accessed memories I hadn't thought of in far too long. I enlisted in 1983, retired in 2005. In those 22 years I was privileged to travel throughout the U.S. and Europe with my Air Guard units to places I would otherwise never been. Despite all of that, however, my greatest joy came on 16 Dec 2016 when then Pres. Barack Obama signed into law the "Jeff Miller and Richard Blumenthal Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2016" which granted veteran status for National Guard soldiers and airman and reservists from all branches of service. That had been an open and painful wound for so very long, to now join the ranks of our countries veterans was beyond words for me.Once again I thank you for a well prepared and presented video. I wish both you and your husband very successful careers and happiness in all your endeavors.Laura

He eventually become commandeer of maintenance in 177th and also 170th air guard units. He retired. as a full Colonel.. In 1973 I enlisted while I was in college, he swore me in. How do you maintain a stable job if you are constantly sent to all those locations? That’s my biggest concern right now.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 років тому +28

      If you're employed by a civilian job while you're in the guard, they're required to support and honor your commitment and allow you to leave. They're required, if you get deployed for instance, to give you up to five years away and still guarantee a job of your same pay when you return. Most civilian employers are very understanding - mine loved it because of all the cool skills I brought back with me each time!

    That was very helpful. I've been thinking about joining. I feel like my life is at a dead end place in time. And have a friend who is in the air national guard and he loves it. I have to set up a time with him to go to his recruiting center. It just feels like the right thing to do in this part of my life. I have nothing right now except a skydiving and BASE jumping back round. Which really hasn't gotten me anywhere,as a citizen. So I think I know which path I would take in the air national guard. Maybe like paramedic or a main rigger. Or both.

    I was an enlisted Air Technician in the OHANG. Technicians are full time federal civil service employees and members of the units they work for. We were unionized and wore our uniforms to work every day. Best job in the military.
    I was in mobile radar units. We deployed for training and real world missions several times per year. Being constantly in the field far removed from anyone who cared about haircuts and shined boots. I’d have never made it in the “real Air Force” on a base.

    In Belgium its sooo much different. If you want to be a professional officer you go to the Royal Military Academy.
    After that you will go to the officer school and in total this will take 5 to 8 year before you will be a officer. even before you start it, you need to pass a exam and have the best results.

    Txs from a retired AF/ANG 1972-1997. I grew up as a child of a Guard member who who entered AF/ANG in 1948. He started out enlisted- AB to CMSgt. Received his commission in 1961. He was a radio operator and then Cyber Security in CAM squadron. Activated when the pueblo incident, we were sent to Myrtle Beach AFB which was one of bases decommissioned. He was what they called civil service, long before AGR. He retired as 06 in 1988. I entered as a Medical Tech Specialist in 1972. In 1989 as received my direct commission as a RN. Dad swore me in for E and C. Did 25 years and then retired bc of back problems. That's so very much, very few women I know have done what we have done. This time in Guard was the best time of my life . MSgt to Captain. Karen. Enlisted E7 MSgt and commissioned as RN, out as a Captain bc of health reasons. I am a female also.

    So basically you had a degree and was selected to become an officer after applying. This seems atypical for the young person out of high school (or enlisting early while in high school) but wanting to join the Air National Guard to afford college. The path to officer would be different in most cases as the commitment is 6 years for some AIT being offered.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  5 років тому

      The path would be atypical if all people joined the Air Guard to pay for college. I joined to do something bigger than "myself" and to better my future life & finances. That's a perfectly normal reason to join. And the path to officer is actually typically like mine in the ANG. You will hardly get selected off the street to be an officer without any prior experience because they often only hire officers from within the enlisted force of the Guard. The exceptions are for pilots, nurses, and doctors. Folks think they can just apply as a civilian and be guaranteed an officer spot. That's hardly the case. Lots of people message me and ask if their recruiter is spitting lies but that's hardly ever the case. This is the normal process.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  5 років тому +1

      Sometimes that's the only way you'll be able to join. Just depends on how your career path looks, what your education is like, and what the hiring unit by you needs. If they NEED officers, maybe you could transition to that pretty easily. If they are full, might be better to go enlisted first to get the time in before commissioning.

      There is a test you'd have to take to get in, it's called the AFOQT. Most folks have to pursue the same route I did, which was enlist and THEN commission. The reason is that officer jobs are typically only open to those who are already enlisted. The exceptions are doctors, lawyers, and highly-skilled nurses.

    Hello. Am i able to come to air national guard as a navy reserve officer? I have a bachelor's degree, but the air guard recruiter will not even discuss me joining as an officer. Navy reserve will. I was thinking of joining guard after 4 yrs in navy reserve

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  5 років тому

      Hey there. For the reasons I discussed in the video, it's super, super challenging to come in as an officer when you don't have a prior service background. Typically ANG only hires folks into officer jobs who are already in the ANG because they have to apply for the job and the qualifying factor is that they're already an ANG enlisted member. SO--if you want to be an ANG officer, my best suggestion is to enlist first (the recruiters are right) and pursue commissioning after you're in. If you want to join as a navy officer, more power to you. Transferring services can be challenging.

    • @Auniesauce

      It’s very hard to join as an officer, even if you have a masters unless you’re a doctor, lawyer, nurse or pastor. Most start as enlisted no matter what. Joining as an officer is like going straight into the company Amazon with no prior experience and taking on a high level director or manager role. Your best option is to speak to a recruiter and see what the options are in your local area.

    Something I'm bothered by is the air national guard won't cover all of flight school. I have a bachelor's of science and want to go to flight school. After speaking with an air national guard recruiter he told me it would most likely only cover "up to" 60% to get all of my ratings in flight school and that I wouldn't even have access to the GI until I acquired active duty time which could potentially take years going air national guard. Being that I can expect to pay about 50k for flight school 60% at best means I'd still be paying 20k out of pocket minimum. I just always thought the military's tuition assistance was better than that.

    I am torn between ANG and Active duty...I have a bachelors (in education in arts and photography) and I am 33 years old. Went to the ANG recruiter and asked about opportunities as a officer and they kinda steered me towards enlisted because my time to get a commissioned is short (I have 1.5 years). I already knew this, apparently no options for officer according to them. They told me the go ANG page is outdated even though weeks ago a lot of jobs seem to have opened up in my area. I don't know if to believe them or not on that.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 років тому +1

      I totally understand where you're coming from. It's VERY hard to join the ANG and commission immediately as an officer. You normally have to come in as enlisted and then attempt to commission. The good news is that they CAN do a waiver for you if you want to commission after 35. I have a buddy who is 38 who just was waived in. But he was prior enlisted. I hope that helps a little!

      Aunie Sauce It does help a lot thank you. Do you have any idea about graduate AFROTC ? looking into that too as a last option and last question for now :), can you please explain how do you choose a job in the ANG or Reserves (there's not much information online about it) my recruiter has been vague about it. I was also wondering, what if the jobs available at the time are nothing I want to do, can I check with him later or can he let me know when new openings are available for the job I want and have qualified for (and is available at my State)? I thank you for any information.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 років тому +1

      I'm not familiar with it, unfortunately. I'm sorry! For choosing a job, after I took the ASVAB and was able to pick whatever job I wanted, I worked with my recruiter (husband) to find the job that fit my interests and one that was open in my area. Personnel was where I found myself going. What I recommend doing is asking your recruiter what jobs are open and then have them give you a tour of that area or go meet with the commander. They're really good about meeting with people. You can also find a lot of information about specific jobs if you google them or at about.com. And YES! You can be put on a waiting list if your preferred job is not available.
