  • Dr. Eric Vermetten takes the stage at the Psychedelics as Medicine conference in Reykjavík, Iceland in January 2023.
    Dr. Eric Vermetten is a professor of Medical-Biological and Psychiatric Aspects of Psychotrauma at Leiden University Medical Center and ARQ Psychotrauma Research Group. Dr. Vermetten’s lab is in the Department of Psychiatry in Diemen. Dr. Vermetten is the author of Behavioral Neurobiology of PTSD which focuses on behavioral neuroscience that supports our understanding of the neurobiology of trauma risk and response.
    Dr. Vermetten coordinates and supervises the research on the biological, psychological, and societal impact of stress and trauma. Throughout this work, Dr.Vermetten focuses on veterans and other uniformed officers and serves as a Strategic Advisor of Research at the Military Mental Health Service with the Dutch Ministry of Defense. He is trained in the Netherlands as well as in the US in both psychiatry and neuroscience from Stanford to Yale and Emory University. He has lectured on the topic of PTSD, resilience, military and veterans issues as well as novel approaches to therapy across the globe.
    Dr. Vermetten has published over 200 papers, over 30 book chapters and has edited several books on the topic of psychedelic use in mental health treatments. His interest in the history of war has gained him insight into combining biological-based interventions in psychotraumatology with novel technology and novel drug developments, particularly psychedelic compounds like MDMA, psilocybin, ketamine, and medical cannabis.
