Huge props for distinguishing traditional vs perceived 'proper' combiners, and especially pointing out that there's been parts-/shell-/non-transforming elements since day 1. I myself am definitely in the traditional camp and would never buy this figure, but damn it sure looks amazing and the ability to switch between toon and G1 faces is a righteous perk. Excellent review as always! Thank you!
Wow, this is the best MP scale combiner that I've seen so far! I love how the different head configurations are implemented. Since the various versions of Menasor out there have featured extensive parts from a second trailer or longer trailer, I've wondered how similar engineering would work with other combiners and I think they did a fantastic job here.
I do like the term “traditional”, thank you. I’m a G1 toy person so I was going to skip these guys but seeing reviews online started to make me come around, including your reviews of how nice the limb bots were. I was skeptical at first with the $400 torso (plus a bonus arm!) but when I saw the toy mode I got all flutter and decided to skip groceries for like six months and get the available ones and preorder the reissues of the rest. Maybe they’ll fix Air Raid up a bit - that does look like a pain. Thanks for the great reviews, now I’m off to make Mac and cheese.
I honestly watch your reviews because you always state your honest opinion but open minded. And the opposite way of thinking is why sometimes i dont get along with the conservative or traditional fans of TF. Loved that bit about combiners! Combiners is what i like more from TF and def love watching so much different variations to choose from every day. Who would have thought we could get so many options and also with varieties of price ranges in this modern times and also available almost worlwide.
11:00 couldn’t agree more. There are no rules. If you don’t like it, more for the rest of us lol. Thank you for always being the voice of reason in the tf community Emgo. You’re #1 in my eyes
Hey Emgo, I truly appreciate what you do man, every time I watch your videos you take me back to transformers in 84 and 85 so I thank you for doing what you do, the people who can't appreciate how the toys is, that's their problem.
While parts-forming was always a thing, there is a certain novelty to the all-in-one combiners we've seen the last few years. That being said, I do think there's a realistic limitation to being able to all-in-one every single scramble city combiner. Aerialbots and Stuntacons are the big ones. Sure, Menasor has the trailer gimmick, but even then, thats parts-forming. I think the reason people tend to not fret so much is that the trailer is still 'technically' part of Motormaster. I will say though, out of many parts-formers out there, this one was pretty impressive.
all-in-one is only really possible if third party moves away from G1 accuracy i think despite engineering having moved forwards we had LESS partsforming back in the day (ragnaros, gravity builder, etc) because those combiners were stylized and therefore had room to mess with the proportions and the parts placement and what have you the reason these skeleton systems have gotten so necessary is because the G1 scramble city designs are unworkable otherwise they're not accurate at all to their toys something like mmc's assaultus, which is a set of show accurate combaticons that turn into a toy accurate bruticus (more resembling ruination) is probably the way to go but as long as collectors want a 1:1 match partsforming NEEDS to happen
I forget, maybe Fanstoys, but there is a Motor Master out there that is, "all in one." The trailer folds up onto his back, and it looks pretty good. It compacts down really great. I just can't remember the name, road king maybe? In any case, it looks amazing!
With, at least, Legacy Menasor, Motormaster is still an integral part of the combined mode, while the trailer forms the abdomen and legs, Motormaster provides the head, and the connection point for the shoulders, unlike Superion here, where Silverbolt just fills a gap in the back of a torso that could probably hold togeather without him. That being said, the frame of Legacy Menasor means that the other 4 stunticons are just filling gaps to make him look more complete, but the combined form still works as a supermode for Motormaster, while this Superion does see the Airealbots become the actual limbs.
The thing people have to realize (which took me a while admittedly) is that, well. The G1 toys had a LOT of parts-forming. And the G1 cartoon cheated with mass shifting and mass reforming a LOT. So there's only so much designers can do to make these characters, especially combiners, physically possible and look accurate. And some have done amazing jobs! But it's not always feasable with every character. Once I finally got that lodged in my own head I could enjoy the Legacy Menasor for what it is and I love it. Looks great on display and I still transform it from time to time. (Motormaster alone is a fantastic toy. I like to put him and my G1 copy side by side) Though part of me does still love the more 'traditional' combining of, I think it was an IDW based set of Menasor you reviewed a while back. I'd love to get my hands on that, but I don't think it's available anymore even if I could afford it right now.
Thanks, Emgo316. That was a very good review! Your videos have helped me make better choices when it comes to my collection. This is one of the best versions of Superion. Takara Tomy made a copy, but this big guy is joining my collection.
Honestly the way you've had to explain your thought processes when it comes to reviewing figures is sad. It really sucks that some people can't understand that somebody would like a thing on its own merits or not hold it to an arbitrary standard that no toy has actually lived up to. I always appreciate your input Emgo, even when I don't always see eye to eye with ya. Wish ya well!
A tip of the cap to you Emgo! It is a lot of work doing what you do and the thoroughness you put into it shows. Great work. I personally think Ethereaon looks fantastic and don't care about how they went about it.
I love emgo so much man this channel has been so amazing for the longest time I started watching when I was about 9 or 10 now I’m 16 how the sands of time fall it’s crazy and this guy hasn’t changed one bit
The toy looks awesome. The aerialbots were always my favorite TF G1 combiners. Growing up I had 2 of the arms and always wanted to get the leader. Looking at the site just the leader and the body pieces is $320 and each of the other 4 pieces for $165 each. Expensive hobby.
Honestly i really like this. Yeh, maybe the huge torso and making silverbolt a gap filler were weird but like this is also really great for numerous reasons too, it also means they dont have to have engineering issues by having to make a robot that has leg joints able to handle the shifts in weight from one mode to combined mode, nor shoulders and torsos that may have issues too, or stubborn combiner pegs and ports that need to be designed because they just have them latched on. Id really like to see how them do menasor like this (i dunno if they have a version of him). I remember a devastator like this sorta too, where the lower torso/ waist was a dedicated part and its great, lets them design for a whole cohesive bot and structurally more sound, and it lets there be more potential posability. Soeaking of menasor i remember a lot of people being picky about the legacy menasor having the limb bots do the splitting and the leg parts be on the back but thats also accurate to the show, people will be upset no matter what, but its the quality of the figure that matters too. The only real big issue is additional pricing for what amounts to another boxed part to get, that might be a bit much with how expensive these can already get.
I really want to see a video where you just show us all where and how you store/display all these guys. These are not small toys! This dude's like a toddler :D
There actually is a presidence for this kind of combination: if you're as old as I am (geezer) you may recall the old Go-bot exo-suit combiner where you stuck 4 go-bots into "exo-suits" and attached them to a separate battle ship/torso.
FYI emgo air raid connects easier if you open his legs just enough to tilt his ankles lowering the side pegs on his feet. Also, the jet thrusters for airraid press into a molded piece to lock the jet kibble a bit more. I had to shave a bit on his peg too (on the rounded side only not the wing) Mine pegs great now. I bet that piece will be fixed on the re-issue
I can agree that it looks great and I wouldn't be mad at all having this on a shelf. But, I'm also one of those people who feel like they should've had Silverbolt be the chest. Given the size of this bot and potential stability issues I'm not saying that he should've been the entire torso, but I would've felt a little better if he slid in the front and was exposed. The "leader" is sort of reduced to just being the backpack, and that's weird IMO.
I must admit I do love a traditional combiner, but the bigger ones often have stability issues. If this one can solve that with a little bit of 'extra' support, I don't mind it. I don't think i'd ever pick this up just because of the price. If I did, I'd be bummed at Silverbolt's transformation but if it means the joints last longer then happy days, I'll get over it.
Definitely same here. And I say this as somebody who doesn't love this way of doing combiners. That being said, I'm not upset about it. It's being done for a reason and I save some money
After your last Silverbolt turned out so well, it got me thinking that the only bot in a combined mode set that can afford QC issues is the left arm. Every other bot has too much responsibility to be a fail point.
Now all we need is for the Stunticons to be completed and that won't happen until they give us Dead End. And I don't mind that there are gap fillers and faux pieces because you couldn't get all of the together in the first place without.
Amazing Superion piece and great toy review, as always Emgo, thanks...😊👍 I still await a Superion piece that's just the bots merging to a single titan...🤭
I also noted the toon face mask is removable. I wonder if their was a face swap planned for it too. Like the black face from the toy. Also the blue light works better if used first instead of red. If you wait a bit then use the blue it should work better not sure why though.
I don’t mind the way they combine, but I do wish silverbolt added at least something visually to the combination, like having him include the head would be nice.
Personally I quite like this one. He might parts-form, but it looks like he probably holds together better and is a lot more stable. Out of my price range right now though.
@@demonking86420 The Bruticus is pretty good, but haven't developed the method to magically turn the mostly blue Onslaught into the mostly grey Bruticus
@@demonking86420 mmc takes a LOT of liberties in order to make their combiners all-in-one not to say they're bad they're GREAT combiners and they look awesome but that's the result of the designers being smart and knowing what to compromise on and what to keep in (bruticus is TOY accurate, not show accurate, it looks far more like RID 2001 ruination than G1 bruticus) something 1:1 with the G1 cartoon is probably still gonna need to work off the skeleton system just so the individual bots don't need to be burdened with the prospect of having to adhere to the unworkable cartoon designs

This is the only combiner I'm fine with the fake torso because it actually does something useful in the other modes (granted I would have liked the flight stand to work in robot modes)
Not only have there ever been any hard-and-fast rules for the toylines themselves, the G1 animated/marvel designs were cheaty as hell, ESPECIALLY when it came to the combiners.
I understand that getting a well-proportioned 5-bot combiner without faux parts is well-nigh impossible, especially if you want all five members to be in scale with one another in robot mode. I do just wish that some part of the "torso" bot would be needed for combination. It's a bit disappointing when you can form the combined mode without the center robot, and no one can tell.
Just to clarify Emgo, the TFSafari link is for Slingshot + Superion's Body Parts only and not the whole team. TFSafari has Fireflight, but Airraid/Silverbolt/Skydive are sold out.
The faux torso and thighs are a compromise for show accuracy and that’s something I’m not bothered by. Some compromises have to be made, especially for six changers like Sixshot who basically you have to use your imagination for some of the modes.
I mean, look at what Has to did with Menasor and he turned out awesome...that said, the upper arm is too short, only complaint I'd have with this one. Looks great otherwise. As far as the lights in the head, they made their mistake by painting the visor then using colored LEDs. Would work marginally better with white LEDs
I find it ironic that it's in this video Emgo takes a jab at people complaining about the shell body combiner setup when there was another superion that did it AND a Motormaster. And considering these guys are like masterpiece scale. Can you imagine how BIG Silverbolt would have to be to still pull this scale off?
Awesome combiner! This is the only way to do it if you want your bot to be accurate and functional! I’ll never understand the hate for parts forming!? Great review Emgo!
I used to be really against extreme parts forming for combiners but what really turned me around was a combination (see what I did there?) of MPG Raiden really disappointing me and Magic Square combiners making me very happy around the same time. I have now concluded that if you love toon accuracy like I do you need a combiner with a lot of fake parts. It’s just the realty of the toon cheating so much.
Ethereaon: We don't get paid enough for this job!
Bumblebee: You get paid?
Iron Hide: But Pri... Wait what?!
Prowl (about to flip another table): Say what?!
I would like to see Fans Toys do a Broadside big enough for all 5 of these to fit on in their jet modes at the same time. For display purposes.
Not everyone has an 8 figure salary dude
It would be titan scale though
It’s called the USS Flagg. You’ll need a bigger display room though 😊
General rule is to follow the bot size, so a Broadside Masterpiece will be no bigger than Jetfire
Just buy an old gijoe uss Flagg lol

As far as the lights in the head, they made their mistake by painting the visor then using colored LEDs. Would work marginally better with white LEDs
Looks solid.
You are the best emgo. Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Could've just turned him into an Optimus Speed ball special 😂
I find it ironic that it's in this video Emgo takes a jab at people complaining about the shell body combiner setup when there was another superion that did it AND a Motormaster. And considering these guys are like masterpiece scale. Can you imagine how BIG Silverbolt would have to be to still pull this scale off?
It’s a great looking combine mode and it’s solid without falling apart. If the price was not so crazy I’d have one 😂
I love your never ending quest to end "Toxic Fandom," Emgo! You are the goat!! Changing minds, one at a time!! 👍
Hi Emgo where did you get your transformers ring? I've been trying to get one.
Got it from Etsy
I wonder if the future generations version will use a similar technique in the torso. This thing looks amazing but probably expensive af...
Zeta did the same thing with there silverbolt and it works fine.
This look so cool!
...and Voltron is complete! Jk!🤣👍
The theme was playing in my head too.
