You can try planting some edible cacti. Cacti do well in hot environments and don't require a much water, like prickly pear and dragon fruit.
My wife found an old bag of Publix Lima beans that had weevils so I tossed them in an open corner of a bed back in late Feb. They are growing like the proverbial beanstalk. Full sun and growing up the side of my pool cage while throwing elbows at its tomato neighbors.
That’s awesome! They are a great cover crop for your soil.
Several yea ars ago some family members went to a farm to table restaurant in Charleston, SC and were given small packets of dry sea island red peas. I have been planting them every year since and they grow very well in the hot Florida weather. We enjoy eating them and I always save some to plant the following year. They were the original peas used in Hoppin' John and were brought to the US hidden in the hair of slaves brought from Africa.

Hi Patrina, Thanks for sharing all of your tips on growing in our lovely hot n steaming weather right now. This is the time of year I work in my garden in the evening. I call it sunset gardening. What I have growing in my raised beds right now are a few Jamaican Sorrel, sugar baby water mellon, red onions, pole beans, yard long beans, sweet potatoes, French Sorrel, peppers, cherry tomatoes, egg plant, ginger, tometeos, garlic, spinach greens, Swiss chard, and I'm succession sowing some heat tolerant leaf lettuce in the shade under my patio and a few micro climate shade spots in my garden. So far, they are doing great. I'm determined to keep growing lettuce throughout the summer since I am a very heavy salad eater. I'm also growing a flower garden and lots of herbs too.The fruit I'm harvesting during the summer months will be lots of pineapples, bananas, and some papayas. I may like to try growing some black beans because I do eat them. I just finished harvesting and processing all of my celery tonight. I have been processing bananas nonstop for a month now and made some banana strawberry ice cream tonight that was fantastic. Just when I was starting to get sick of processing bananas. 😂 I guess part of growing your own food is that you become the processing plant, too. 😅 Happy summer gardening from Donna in Sarasota.
Oh my gosh you are so right. No one warns you about all the processing. I’d love to hear how your summer lettuce does. I’m always trying to find varieties that can hold up to the heat.
I am growing Kajari Melons, Okra, cowpeas, lima beans, Sunflowers. The summer is so hot, I am scaling down.
It feels worse than past years but maybe I just forgot lol

I did peanuts last year with raw bird food peanuts and had a great harvest with them! I just pushed them into the dirt shell and all.
I tried that too and they grew but the yield wasn’t the best. What kind did you use?
Whatever extra plants you end up with from thinning should be shared with friends neighbors family coworkers or a plant sharing library

Make sure you have a lot of room for the New Zealand Spinach. It grows in a vine, and will continue to grow until a freeze kills it. It will survive a light frost. In Florida, it will grow perpetually. If allowed, it will reseed itself. I am trying to think of a replacement crop for onions. My bulbing onions are laying flat, some from cats digging, some from rain, and some from pulling weeds. They aren't restanding, and probably are done? I don't need more beans, greens, squash, cucumbers, or melons, so may leave them and wait to see what they do. They aren't due for harvesting until mid August. My garli is nearly ready. I'll harvest them after harvesting my potatoes. Some are starting to yellow, flower, or lay over. I'll harvest them in two to three weeks. Over all, my garden is growing amazingly well. I have peppers ready to harvest. My tomatoes, squash, and ground cherries are setting fuit. The cucumbers and cantaloupe are flowering, and the pole beans are climbing. I have replacement determinent tomato seedlings started. I need to separate them and pot up. I have extra seedlings. I am going to plant them in raised beds that I just removed bolting radishes from. Ssylacauga AL, zone 7B.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a My garden is fairly large, spread out in five zones, and occupies a quarter acre or more. It is a good thing I live in the country and can get away with it. The best way to discribe its size is, if you were to draw a 100 foot circle, it would occuppy 270 degrees of it-not kidding. It is a lot for me to maintain by myself, and planting day is three days for the warm weather crops, and doesn't count the cool weather crops, onions, potatoes, etc...
Those Epic trays really are great. They actually have a bunch of sizes now. I love the 5" for big seeds or potting up when I sow things a little too early in winter. I like that they have lined grow bags too.

Excellent video! Thanks for the boost to keep going, even though the heat is already here. This year, I'm growing several kinds of peppers, mostly sweet, My tomatoes are doing great. The kale, collard greens and rainbow chard are thriving. My experiment this summer are rattlesnake beans. Fingers crossed. Green Blaze bush bean, red swan bush beans and purple teepee beans are up and growing well. I hope to get a harvest before the heat gets to be just too much for them .
It means a lot to me that even experienced gardeners don't succeed with every plant.Thank you for reminding me of that .

Last year's Eggplant is super abundant so far. Already harvested over 30 medium sized. Tomatoes, also from last year are so-so and this year's vines are growing fast. So far the fastest grower is my sweet potato that has already covered my raised bed and spilling over the sides.

When do you plant the sweet potatoes in Florida?
@@CH-hm8ud I'm in East Central Florida and put my slips in end of March, beginning of April. Also had about 8 volunteers come up from 2 beds. I didn't separate the individual slips from the volunteers because I don't have enough space for them. Seeing as they came up by themselves in April, I'd say the ground is more than warm enough to plant in April for a long growing season.

Another great video full of advice❤. I wish you would include a section where you state what seeds you are starting for that month when you actually start them. The ones in this video are already started and growing strong and feel like it would be too late. Maybe like a plan ahead short! I love your videos and I even bought some sun hemp!

I'm growing Christmas lima beans in big hanging pots and they are doing great hanging from my pergola and growing all over it , this is my first time growing them

Growing squash, okra, cowpeas, pumpkins, and lonv beans for the first time. Ive been having blossom end rot issues with the squash.
Oh that’s no fun. I would pick the bad fruits off, give them a tomato liquid fertilizer (it should have the calcium it needs) and monitor my watering carefully. Too much or too little can make the next round of fruit have the same issue.

My goodness sweet potatoes in here in FL grow like weeds! Will easily take over a bed. In fact they will also work well as a cover crop like your sun hemp. Also like the sun hemp I believe sweet potato leaves are nitrogen fixers.

Enjoyed the video. I will probably watch it again. I probably watched too many videos on heat loving veggies that I bought way too many different and unique varieties to try this year. I am trying both the Roselle and the Cranberry Hibiscus and already started my transplants. I am also looking forward to trying Egyptian Spinach.
I think you will really love the New Zealand spinach, I grew it a couple of times and ate it both as cooked greens by itself and I also used it as a substitute for the regular spinach in my spinach and onion omelet (yum). I forgot to save seeds last year and no volunteers have come up yet. Since I also bought some pretty Multicolored spinach Amaranth seeds and another Asian green spinach substitute I may just give them a good try as I can always get more NZ spinach seeds to start later if the others are not to my liking.
I have also grown the Suyo Long Cucumber and they did great. I didn't see any trellis for them to climb up and was wondering if you are just going to let them sprawl on the ground? The first year I grew the Suyo Long cucumbers they grew taller than the 8ft trellis I had next to them. What I like most about that cucumber variety, is they don't seem to get bitter even if you let them get bigger than they should and they do get really long and big before getting that old cucumber texture.
I am also trying some other first timers like, Rattle Snake beans, Rat's tail radish and Jewels of Opar (supposedly a heat loving edible green that has beautiful pink Babies-breath type flowers). I know there was a few more but way to many for me to remember let alone plant. What was I thinking?

the rosita is also from puerto rico. im happy as a puerto rican to see someone else growing our crops :). i hope i can have my luffa this year for the first time. i liked suyo long. theyre long and go crazy like tromboncino . need trellis. i also have the epic gardening cells but in pink. and the greenstalks in pink its all pastel here buahahaha / alow neighbor :)
I love that! Your pink garden must be beautiful. One of my viewers is from Puerto Rico and sent me a bunch of Puerto Rican seeds which I was so grateful for because I absolutely love those varieties. They seem to do so well here and they taste amazing.

You forgot the bikini and lemonade 🍋! 😉. Grest video. I got most my summer crop in the ground already. Okra, summer squash, sweet potatoes, plenty tomatoes included everglades as you recommended. Watermelon, spaghetti squash corn, cucumber 🥒 eggplant green beans and more. I did get a planner just havent written anything in it 😂
Haha! It took me years before I started writing stuff down. I always assumed I’d remember and then I don’t.

I hate the texture of Okra, but my mom keeps telling me to try making “okra chips” where you roast them in the oven… so I caved and will be growing it for the first time this year lol. Besides that, I’m a little north of the panhandle and still learning about this area so I’ve been experimenting with succesion sowing summer veggies to see how long they can go where I’m at!

I heard you can eat the leaves of cow peas?? And they said the seeds of the Roselle plants are toxic!! The edible part is the calyx only.
Yes! You can eat the cowpea leaves. They are very nutritious. I’ve never heard that about the roselle seeds but I normally just eat the calyxes. 💚
I'm planing on adding prickly pear to my summer garden, maybe even some aloe because cacti are better at handling high temperatures. I've also heard this year will be a drought year and judging by how hard it's been to keep any moisture in my soil......yeah that checks out.
That does seem to be the route we are headed.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a yeah, last year got to like 113° and their isn't that many plants that can handle such high heat.
@@user-qx1om2wj1h I like to switch to grass clippings for mulch during the summer because it seems to just hold water so much better and that tends to help my plants during that dead of summer heat

Patrina, Would you recommend sowing Sun hemp in a raised bed that still has some nice lettuce and Swiss chard at one end or will the sun hemp overtake those plants? This is a bed that I’m probably not going to use again til fall. When I want to use the bed again in fall and chop & drop the sun hemp will it regrow and have to be continually picked out like a weed and how long would I need to leave the chop & drop sun hemp decay as mulch before planting anything there again?
This month begins my 2nd year of gardening and I can’t believe that much time has passed. I want to say that without your help I likely wouldn’t have been as successful or looking forward to year two. You are tremendously appreciated by me and my little Dunedin garden. Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh, you are so sweet. And that makes me so happy to hear that you are on year two. The first year is always the hardest but it sounds like you’re making great progress. For the sunn hemp I would wait to plant it until you’re done with those plants because it does sprout and grow very quickly and can overwhelm a bed fast. Once you chop it and drop it, it probably will not re seed itself unless you are very very far south Florida, and it has already flowered and created seed pods, which normally it doesn’t do if you are not in the deep south of Florida. Once you chop it and drop it you just treat it like a mulch and plant your plants, you don’t have to wait for it to break down.

You mentioned chard in the summer not being to your liking. Have you tried perennial spinach? I get the seeds from the urban harvest and to me, it is milder so far this year.
I haven’t but I did get a sissoo spinach which is perennial and I do like that one. It’s very good
Trying to figure out why you planted sweet potatoes in the tower? Sweet potatoes are gigantic!! They won’t fit once they actually start growing 🤔
I’m testing it out compared to growing in a bed. Lots of my viewers have container gardens so I want to see if I can match my raised bed results.
So are the Egyptian and New Zealand lettuce used in a cold salad or do you cook them. I am growing China Jade cucumbers and I'm getting ridiculously fantastic results, the other Beit Alpha are growing leaves and flowers but so far no fruit. Another green I grow in the summer is malabar spinach which you can cook or add to your salad and we also have arugula, which unchecked, will seed itself all over the place !!! I love your videos and always get soooo much info from you and I love that you are basically right across the state so we have similar growing conditions!!!! Thank you for all you do!!!!
I’ve grown red Malabar and I loved it. The Egyptian spinach can be eaten raw or cooked. I’m new to the New Zealand so I’ll have to give you an update on that one later. Thanks so much for watching 💚

Thank you, your videos are always helpful! I decided to give 2 of my raised beds a rest this summer and myself as well lightening my gardening (although I have 1 raised bed full of goodies, GS and other areas in my garden lol) Question: I pulled my winter plants out, moved the mulch aside the beds and sprinkled cover crop seeds from Urban harvest and watering daily. Do I move the mulch back? Im not sure if the seedling can push up the Florimulch? Should I have covered the seeds with soil even? Thank you!
It wouldn’t hurt to cover them with a light amount of soil. You can leave the mulch off of it and sprinkle it back on later once they’ve sprouted or just wait until you’re ready to pull them. They should create a mat over the top of the soil that covers it as well as the mulch was covering it.
Something ate all my peanuts and none of my jicama came up.
I had the same problem with squirrels stealing the peanuts out of the bed. As for the jicama, I have found that they sprout better in trays than they do direct seeded. Last year I tried direct seeding them and none of them came up, but this year when I started them in trays in the shade, they all sprouted.

I actually don’t, but that’s mainly because the west side of my garden is very shaded so it gets afternoon shade that way. But I know a lot of people that use shave cloth with success here in Florida.
I am growing bell peppers. They struggling in the heat. I can not move the growing pot. How do I shade?
Can you move a bigger plant to its west side to provide it afternoon shade? Otherwise umbrellas or shade cloth are another option

hi, i'm a complete noob. oak leaves ok in plant beds? my husband told me they kill the grass so i always assumed they were bad for all plants but i could've sworn i see them in your bed. thoughts? thank you!!
I do use them in my bed. I think they kill grass because the grass gets buried under them. Our plants grow above the leaves.
What kind of mulch is that?
I use leaves, wood chips, grass clippings and plant debris for my mulch
