Japan's Manga Industry Uncovered | One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Tsubasa (The SHONEN JUMP Story)

- Behind the scenes of Weekly Shonen Jump, home of popular manga series NARUTO, ONE PIECE, DRAGON BALL, CAPTAIN TSUBASA, KOCHIKAME and so many more, where I'll talk with the editor-in-chief Hiroyuki Nakano and Shuhei Hosono.
When publisher Shueisha asked me if I'd like to learn more about the manga industry and their amazing 50 years of history, I JUMP'ed at the chance! This is an exclusive inside look at Japan's most well known manga weekly.
What makes manga so culturally important to Japan?
How does one become a manga artist?
What is it like being one the world's top manga artist?
SHONEN JUMP LEGENDS interviewed:
★ 秋本 治 Osamu AKIMOTO (Kochikame series)
★ 嶋田 隆司 Takashi SHIMADA (Yudetamago | Kinnikuman series)
★ 中井 義則 Yoshinori NAKAI (Yudetamago | Kinnikuman series)
★ 高橋 陽一 Yoichi TAKAHASHI (Captain Tsubasa series)
The manga culture here moves fast! It’s competitive, almost like all out war! Artists want to be the best and that creates amazing content each week. The winner are the fans who are left wanting more after reading the 400-500 pages of manga series inside.
SHONEN JUMP is targeted to boys but the audience is much wider these days, especially online at Shonen Jump Plus.
shonenjumpplus... where you can get a lot of free online manga content from famous series and also purchase the same weekly Shonen Jump that’s at the newsstand on the same day for the same price.

okay, not gonna lie, i got goosebumps when I saw the ink bleeding through the back of the one piece original. oh my god. i wish i could get that close to an original Oda-sensei's work D;
It was a very awesome moment to share! I wish he;d walked into the editing room at that moment too!! I have a ton of questions!!
Same! When I saw the ink, I was like, "This is artwork that was drawn directly by Odachii-sensei..." *Goosebumps intensify*
I want to meet pikachu seiyuu tho.
Please do one episode on seiyuu???pikachu seiyuu ontani ikue.
I know how you feel I've been watching it for over 15 years, the first thing that went through my head though was how much some would pay for those? 🤑 I got Nami eyes LOL.

The reason why I love Japan!
Musico Cineasta tell it to the Chinese
C Where were you trying to go with that?
@Thorekk Yeah must be bad living in the country with the highest life expectancy.
This channel is one of a very few that I give a thumbs up before I even watch.
psygn0sis same i love watching only in japan
Same here including the OiJ-Go Channel.
Lo
the anime/manga Bakuman is a great depiction of how a manga artist begins, the whole process of the weekly production, and even the "war" between artists/writers and even including their editors. was pretty fun recognizing terms they use like "name" for a rough draft of the artist's idea for the next issue and even actual people used in the series, even how a series meets it's end and how new ones are introduced. highly recommend it!
About the "name" part, from i what i know is that Toriyama when serializing dragon ball, he didn't do the draft, he just straight up do the storyboard then the finisher..idk if people still do that
The office is Just Like in bakuman 😱
klub7justin same thought! Amazing!!!
klub7justin fr!!
Actually is shounen jack in bakuman
Wyd
@@raidenstark315 read the manga, they publish in shonen jump. They just changed that in the anime
It's finally here!!!
naruto and attack on titan
Attack on Titan isn't Weekly Shonen Jump :P actually, Naruto is after 1980s so it wasn't in the JUMP exhibition but Naruto is from this weekly manga magazine and part of it's history from 1999 to 2014. It's awesome!
yes, AoT is not for 'shonen'
+li wu but the manga is not the mangazine
+li wu guys this manga isn't t part of weekly shonen jump
Dude... This video is astounding. I've been following One Piece for years and you have the chance to meet their new editor Naito-san 6:20, talking about the latest cover page of One Piece made by Oda himself. Is that Suguru Sugita-san 5:33? Everything in this video made me jealous.
Anw, I like how the old-time mangakas see each other as rival and nakama. It's like the spirit of shonen jump is still passed on to the new mangakas. Love the energy there. Keep up the good work John :D
Yeah it definitely looks like him
Yeah there was so many interesting tidbits like that all over this video, really a treasure trove for Jump fans. Looks like Sugita was editing The Promised Neverland too. Pretty interesting all round.
it's the original thing.
Yeah, that's The Promised Neverland
Its totaly like bakuman describes it at Jump which is total awesome
The DragonBall Burger is the only way to go!
It looks fun.
Yeah
I have been following One Piece since its start.Thank You for this video. You made a new fan.
I have been reading One Piece since I was teenagers. Now I have three kids and the manga never show any sign of stopping. If you did not read one piece, You are missing out.
I'm watching one of the best episode while I'm in Japan for the first time. What a great timing!
Welcome to Japan!! Hope you're having fun!
Thank you, John!
@extremewatcher Lucky bastard, lol! Have fun!
Thanks, lol.
Are you?weeaboo!
海外の人達に日本の漫画を知ってもらえて嬉しいっすね😏
I am delighted to let people from overseas know Japanese comics ;)
I hope this video makes an impact to learn more about Japanese manga IN JAPAN and how imporant and how hard people work to make it
Even though is more for boys.... that place is heaven for an otaku lile me 😍
Vanessa Mullaj is there like a girls version ( not saying sj is exclusive to boys) of sj
As the term Shonen (or Shounen) means “boy” the actual targeted demographic is primarily teenage boys. The confirmed age range is 12 to 18 years. So that’s why. So when they say boys they don’t mean boys of all ages. But for some reason they tend to not be very specific.
But it makes sense why they are primarily aimed towards teenage boys cuz 90% of Shonen manga has teen boys as the main protagonist and that’s traditional as it makes the protagonist relatable to the targeted readers.
Soooo true😁
Vanessa Mullaj same!!
Amazing! I can't believe you got to go inside and film and interview the legendary shonen jump! The offices look like the ones from the manga bakuman... chaotic and awesome lol
Wow one piece's mangaka is so talented...
DBZ Burgers!
Lol one mangaka kept mentioning it was like WAR for first place XD the rivalry is real
Most people hate the Bakuman live action
Aaaah this was so nostalgic for me! I grew up on Shonen Jump! I had stacks taller than I was, and it was always so fun to go back and re-read the issues, and I used them for drawing practice because I wanted to be a mangaka. Thanks for this video! ^_^
This is certainly one of, if not, your best videos to date. 10/10!
Okay guys, "exposed" in the title does not mean what you think it does. It's just simply means an in depth look into shounen jump. Please interpertate correctly before commenting.
Exactly! expose ɪkˈspəʊz,ɛkˈspəʊz/ verb
past tense: exposed; past participle: exposed 1. make (something) visible by uncovering it. "at low tide the sands are exposed"
Note: This is the first time anyone has covered the inside of Shonen Jump, how to become a manga artist or how the manga process works.
I don't get it. What's other meaning for 'exposed'?
probably they think something "sensational" and probably they're just newbs that got interested just by the word "manga"
To uncover. To show. To bring to light. To divulge. To show off. To feature. lol but you can't fight it so I changed it to "uncovered", a pun on the fact that I'm showing a cover :) hehehe it's actually better than "exposed" now! Always think positive.
Anyone who is familiar with his videos knows A: because of the fact that the title of 3 other videos use exposed in the same way, it is consistent and obvious when you get into it which way he was using it, B it is just a title, beyond the fact that it was rather obvious what the meaning was, and just enjoy this rare, inside scoop that he has given us

I'm like.. "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh " when I saw the original masterpiece of Oda-sensei. You're so lucky John. I love One Piece.
this is the quality content that i've been waiting for
I remember when they brought Jump to America and I love it! Sadly the shop I bought it from stopped selling it, but it didn't stop me from loving the manga! The Kuroko no Basket characters in the office are so cute!
after just finishing bakuman, this was an awesome video to watch
awesome I love anime and manga
This was such a great episode. It was so interesting to see behind the scenes of Shonen Jump, and catch a glimpse of it's history and the people who bring these manga to life. Great work John!
Very interesting to hear about the process behind Shonen Jump. My favorite manga, "Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma", is made by Shonen Jump.
Yay! It's Here! I assumed I knew nothing about Manga but hearing the chat about Fist of The North Star made me smile as I realise I actually did partake of this medium a little when it came to life as anime cartoons, couldn't get enough of it and actually recall explaining some parts to my younger brother and some guys at university. Fantastic film and may this continue in the distant future.
loved the video....
manga is what connected me to Japan.....and I started following you to know more about Japan....here you are doing a video on Japanese manga shonen jump.....
thank you for a lovely video
Oh wow this is like a scene out of Bakuman. I love how this channel gets access to things not even other media have covered. Love this!
This episode was really enjoyable, thanks a lot :)
It's also pretty cool how accurately Bakuman represented Shueisha itself in the anime, it looked so identical!
Basically it was from the creator's of death note

Thank you so much for this intriguing walk through a legendary building, and process I have been curious about for ages! I always shudder when I think about the massive amount of work this company does in a week considering how many publications they own. Great Work!
It was insane and just being in that editor's room was an episode! I couldn't cut much out of this because it was so interesting and valuable to others. The artist interview, I cut 65% of it and I could have kept it all! Boy do they work hard on their craft at Shueisha! Respect to artists and editors and hope they can elevate even more! Thanks for writing in and watching Gene!
Hello i just came from your Instagram live stream and watched this video. I have been a long time fan of only in japan and it makes me happy to see the show grow bigger and get better. Because of videos like yours i have become inspired to visit japan and now after expirencing it first hand i hope to one day move there.
Everything in this video, is new information to me, lol. I'm clueless when it comes to manga, I only know a few of them by name. (mostly thanks to videogame covers) Thanks for another great, well made video John.
Thomas
I know! Me too - which is why I JUMP'ed on to the chance. When you know a little of the back stories, where it comes from, it's easier to get (more) excited about it. I'm still a newbie and had a beginner's approach to this video -- which is why KK's experience was so valuable to me and this video. Thank you for writing in Thomas. Will have to go get that coffee soon!
SUPERGENKI JAPAN watch anime BAKUMAN to know more about manga😁😁
@ONLYinJAPAN Absolutely, you're 100% right about that, and I guess that goes for just about anything - the more you know about it, the more you'll be able to appreciate it. Sure, just let me know whenever you're in the neighborhood (Nihombashi or Shinjuku (home/work))
Take care.
@Levi Levi Thanks, will check it out! ^^
You really should! Bakuman is one of my favorite series. I own all the manga volumes, and they are well read. Really takes you inside the industry, and is so enjoyable. I have heard that the anime did a pretty good job.
Thanks for showing these, I am really big fan of One-piece
今回はすごいな、日本人だろうと必見だな、よく編集部に入れたな?youtuberでは初めてじゃね?
初めてです〜すごくラッキーでした!
I wish we had something like this everywhere , wherein artists and story writers would come together and create a masterpiece.
I wish..
Hello from Japan 🇯🇵 Kanagawa- kawasaki shi 😊😊😊
Hello neighbor!
When the editor start to touch the paper of original artwork of oda . I just can screaming "GYAAAA DON'T TOUCH IT , NOOOO DONT TOUCH IITTT"
He is killing me
I want ONE PIECE FROM THAT EDITOR 😭😭😭😭😭
Saw One Piece in this video, makes me love this channel even more
Jump holds a super special place on my heart because my favorite manga Hannarito is poroduced by it! It is horrendeously underrated buf I love it! Its about maikos/geishas and I am so obsessed with them so for me it was an absolute win win, and I even managed to find my comfort character whose name is Kotomi (the girl on my pfp) and I love her with all my heart!! Thank you Japan, thank you Shonen Jump!❤❤💗
Thanks for featuring Manga! I loved it since I was a kid and I didn't grew up in Japan :) got my 1st copy at a secondhand bookstore!
I saw this on my recommend list and glad i watched it. It was spot on with what i knew about Japan and the manga industry. That Manga Artist press conference though wish we had more of those in general i love how they all interacted with each other and wanted to see like Hiro Mashima, Masashi Kishimoto, Tite Kubo and Eiichiro Oda together would have been epic.
+1 and subbed.
another great video! i going to japan next month i can't wait to be there !
Japan is awesome man!!!!!I'm in love with Japan now
Awesome. My daughter and I loved the episode. We thought it was pretty cool that they are now accepting work from around the world.
I know, right!! It's cool how they're opening it up internationally. Best wishes to you and your daughter from Tokyo! -john
GOD ODA DAMM those crew and detail in one picture of crew
To the peeps saying that the jump office looks like the one in Bakuman, then you should know that the anime/manga itself takes its inspiration in [possibly] real life perception/experience of the mangaka. More interesting infos:
1. Manga is published by Shonen Jump and the way the manga is explained is based on how the industry really works in Jump.
2. Like the lead pair of Ashirogi Muto, the mangaka for Bakuman is also a pair of writer and artist. Takagi is modelled after Obata for which it was said that Takagi is better at constructing dark-themed stories (note the success of Death Note). And Mashiro modelled after Ohba for both their semi-realistic style of drawing.
3. Some mangakas in the series are modelled after real mangakas. Eiji is modelled after Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Hiramaru is modelled after Yoshihiro Togashi (HxH), etc... (i had to re-read the entire series after knowing these things and it made the series more interesting lol)
4. Ashirogi Muto's favorite editor Hattori exists in real life and is an editor for One Piece.
5. Aida Souichi (the fat megane guy who is the team leader of Hattori) is based on the real vice editor-in-chief of Jump, Aida Souichi (same name!). The real guy stood as the editor of Bakuman itself!!
6. The final manga created by Ashirogi Muto, Reversi (about the black and white angel), is modelled after Death Note which was created by the same mangaka.
You'll find out more if you search for it. ;)
I wish we had something like this in the outer Japan world
We have marvel
@@iamsubscribedtomorechannel9633 not the same
Hmmmmm
@@iamsubscribedtomorechannel9633 Marvel can never be compared to Japanese manga, the Japanese are on a whole different level
@@KARINA29534 Wtf?
Amazing episode John!!! I love how you show different sides of Japan that other UA-camrs do not think of. From food, to history to some of my favorite anime. Please keep up the great work. #1 favourite youtuber
"Go back from school, then get jump!" oh~~~~ the memories Q____Q
its sooo overwhelming to see those authentic drawings of oda sensei, thank you so much for sharing 😭😭😭😭
Just saw one piece original art always makes me happy :-)
A most Sincerest Thank You! Outside of manga references and imagination I never thought I'd see the inside of the Jump Editor's room. You made a dream come true! Only on this Channel Only in Japan. Subarashii~
Thanks for sharing! It was an interesting episode =)
Just the first couple min into this video and my grin is from ears to ears. Thank you very much John for the inside look. This is a rare video for a publisher like Jump and I'm very happy you're the one who covered it for us!
i love japan ilove one piece
Still trying to catch up to all of your videos! But i love them so much!!! Still hoping one day to get to that beautiful country
It's not only for boys. Anyone can read it. It's TARGETED towards boys, but I know plenty of girls who read it. From Shonen Jump, I like Gintama and Kekkai Sensen.
Kekkai sensen is not in weekly shonen jump .Gintama is almost over
Oh, didn't know that, but I checked and it was published in a Shonen publication, Shonen Square. I don't see how the fact that Gintama is almost over has to do with anything, though.
+valerielugokp I'm trying to say is that shonen jump feels very empty .I'm just saying that after this series I thought you would just stop checking the other shonen anime/manga
No.
There's always other stuff to consider to read or watch.
Your channel deserves more views and subscriptions. Good job!
I have a feeling that John doesn't read manga or One Piece to be specific. I would be like a kid in a toy store high on sugar if I were allowed inside that place and hold hand drawn art by GOD ODA!!
I am totally a newbie (after almost 20 years here) and came at this episode objectively - which is why I needed KK in the intro. I won't pretend to be an expert. I'm far from it, but I know how important it is in Japan, to the culture and modern history, so it's good to read manga. (Actually when you talk to guys in Japanese, there are a lot of references coming from manga so it's def good to know!) -john
ONLY in JAPAN Wow! I did not expect reply from you, John. Keep making these awesome videos, I love this channel and how you are always smiling in these videos. Makes me happy while watching them.
When I read one piece I would be shocked if people saw me have his work .I understand oda' appeal was his arcs but not a fan
Its obviously not his first time there
frozen fire me toooooo!
Your channel is fantastic, thank you so much!
John, this is a great video and I love ONLY IN JAPAN!
I've watched every video on this channel and most of the videos of the Go channel (actually maybe I have watched all the ones there too). I also try to catch the live streams on Instagram and UA-cam when I can. I have some questions, if you don't mind answering:
1) How do they decide the order of each series in each issue? Do the most popular ones go first?
2) What is the longest running Shonen JUMP series? It looked like some have been running for almost as long as SJ itself!
3) Is there other types of weekly manga series besides SJ? Are there ones made for girls or do only boys generally read them?
4) How did the special sandwiches taste?! I was most excited about that part so if you have any B roll footage you would like to share, I would love to take a closer look.
Sorry for all the questions. If anyone besides John knows the answers to some of these questions, please feel free to answer. Thank you for continuing to make these videos, John! I will continue to be a fan.
This is awesome, you have to make more episodes like this, uncovering places and things that are so special to people. Greetings from Guatemala :). (Waiting for another hot springs episode with a lot of snow ;) )
That original cover page for One Piece from Goda himself... 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Super cool! Thank you so much for the exclusive behind the scenes. It's interesting how their workspace is set up. Also, I think it's interesting that their issues are weekly- I remember buying the first volumes of different series at bookstores (like Borders) way back over 10 years ago. I so would have appreciated weekly issues back then...
Thank you John, this is awesome,
Imagine getting a weekly shonen jump mag every week after school at a gas station or convenience store, that would be amazing! I still am grateful for the digital shonen jump subscription though.
Watching IG live and this at the same time 😁👍🏼
AWESOME!! Thanks for watchign live. I will do another live stream on Instagram tomorrow when people in the USA wake up. It's 4am in New York now. -john
This channel just keeps getting more awesome.
good episode! i really enjoy this one.
Wow....seeing the authors of Kinikuman...That was freaking awesome!
Haikyuu, Gintama, Kuroko no Basket, Boku no hero academia, ... is my Favorite Manga ♡
Boku no hero is my favorite but do you wonder how Gintama will end
Matt Lucas I don't know :3
+My Lian Mei I hope it's great
+Matt Lucas
It's more of a comedy, so I wouldn't expect such a fantastic finale.
+TheFVguy still it's worth the wait
2:50 oh my god! I'm glad this man has included Ginga Nagareboshi Gin in his golden age collection! I felt a great happiness in my heart when I also saw the magazines in the background and Gin on the cover (3:09 -)!!!!! It's so cool that the company still remembers and pays homage to this Manga too!
Don't worry, Probably not many know this saga because it is very underrated but I really recommend watching the Anime and the mangas it's worth it!
Good series probably because the manga is not available in English print
After watching Bakuman, this is even more interesting!
このエピソード、今までの中で最高かも。有難う。高校通学中に毎週駅で買っていました。けんこばナイス。
i love u more knowing u like one piece (i assume coz there was a large amount of one piece shown compared to other mangas)
Seeing some behind the scenes of Shonen Jump just made me giggle like a little school girl! This was so great!! I've watched this video (among many other 'Only in Japan' videos too many times now.
thank you so much for this video
this is awesome, can see the work place of shone Jump, hear and see chit-chat all legendary mangaka . thank you for the video

Yayaya! So happy this is finally posted! I saw a preview on instagram live! Thanks for this John!!!! I love manga and anime! Definitely needed destress after working. Anime and manga have been there when relating to things or just to day dream ~
This was super interesting and very entertaining. 👍
Man the editorial place looks so much like it does in Bakuman; the artist absolutely nailed the essence of it! very interesting video!
Those original Eichiro Oda's art work will cost a Million in next 50 years
and jump will take the money for themselves
Oh man... I would kill for one of those original One Piece works!
He should go to Tamiya headquarters
Thanks for the reply John!! I asked that because I'm learning Japanese... And I want to go to Japan.... I will meet you if I go... Btw I came from the insta live stream... Do more like this... Thanks! 😊
Nice video! It would have been cool to actually "see" how a story is created, to see an artist draw, an editor edit and so on. Perhaps this was not allowed to film and show, but i would have loved to see that process :)
Maybe in the future :) but as you heard in the artist interviews, it is war! To release a video like that would give away some secrets ... but I think the culture is opening up, esp with more foreign artists joining so who knows?! I am hopeful of that chance and will keep at it Dave! I sort of went behind the scenes at a small anime studio a couple of years ago. Large corporations are much harder to crack, but they've got many amazing series and it's what fans want to see.
Yes i heard what they said and its a bit of a shame really that people still work like that. A possitive competition to encourange to better oneself is always good. People should apriciate each others work and colaborate so there is a cool story in each magazine every week and not try to "crush" the competition.
In the end it's still about money and trying to sell as much magazine as possible and unfortunatly that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.
But hopefully you will get the chance to film the process and show it to us one day, i will be looking forward to that!
Dave watch the anime bakuman there is 3 seasons all about manga it has shonen jump in the manga anime and one piece bleach dragon ball naruto showing in it check it out if you haven't
I have heard of the anime but not seen it, i'll be sure to check it out. Thanks!
But with "appreciate each other work and collaborate" basically means that something mediocre should be treated as good.
To do better, to do way way better than normal, you have to have a really really big competition and drive to surpass and crush the others.
The only thing that you don't need is negative interaction. But that I mean, doing the others worse for yours to be better than them. This is a problem, but if your actions is to be better than the others even when they are in their best. Real battle and conflict makes things way better.
"About money" is the same as saying is "About survival"!
"About Selling as much magazine" is the same as saying is "About reaching more people with better experiences"
If you want to know about the process you can just try to write a book with an editor. Other than some specificity of Shueisha, and the fact that is weekly. The rest is pretty much the same. For what have been said is not like they have a secret way of dealing with it.
You did. We can see inside of the editor room of Weekly Shonen Jump. Thank you John.
I saw this vido for like 3 or 4 timed
Its my first time and goosebumps already!
Great video as always. This content is one of my favorites in your channel.
Dang. This is good
The original one piece drawing by Oda himself omg!
Thank you for this episode!!!!
