- I have been keeping and breeding northern blue tongue skinks continuously for over twenty five years. Recently I've given my breeding group a major upgrade which I'm very happy about. Check it out!
Your affection for them is inspiring ❤
Awesome video! I really appreciate your point of view on breeder setups as opposed to a hobbyist setup. Your care info and setups are great as well - thank you!
Good for you making the right investments for your BTS health and not running a herp puppy mill like so many breeders
It certainly cost me a heck of a lot more money doing this and I can’t keep nearly as many as I could otherwise. Thank you for the support!
Wow I'm so glad to have found your channel. You have great information for people and I use a simular setup for breeding. Not to mention you have a obvious mind for science and the best health for the captive BTS. 👍
Thank you! I am a former zookeeper and a biology teacher of 15 years so a scientific approach to animal husbandry is definitely my thing.
Outstanding video Frank. Great job.
Thanks Wally!
great video frank i cant wait to see some lacerta videos
Love ya man. Question where did you get those racks 🤣
Fantastic video Frank!
I love my BTS I got from you last year! Hoping to get another one from you this spring!
That’s great! Thank you!
Awesome video! Bravo on having a very nice breeding set up, with halogen light for heat and UVB! Also, for explaining the difference between breeder and keeper set ups. I hope you would consider doing a podcast episode with Dillon Perron from the Animals at Home Podcast. He features people like yourself who try to go one step further with how they do things. I've been subscribed for quite some time and it was nice to hear you get that shout out from Adam! Congratulations on what you are doing. I only wish I could get my Northern from you but being in Canada, that is not going to happen.
Thank you so much! I’d be happy to go on that podcast. :)
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne, that's great. I sent the link and information to Dillon through his Patreon.
@@rickcroney1286 thanks!
Looking great Frank planning on doing something similar this year
Thanks!!
You deserve more subscribers
Thank you! I’m pretty new to UA-cam so hopefully that will change with time. :)
I'd love to have a BTS some day.
Well done!
Thank you!
Look at all those squirmy sausages! 😆😍🥰
Great video! I was looking for a setup like that to grow out some hatchling ackies but I can’t find them on his website (purple background, looks like the website was built in the 90’s) I want to know the price of a rack like the one you showed here.
You’ll have to message directly. They are semi custom.
It's to bad they don't have info about those racks on there site
@@ericb4492 They are mostly a made to order thing, not something they typically make.
Great video
Nice shirt 😉 I know your pvc enclosures aren’t from him but do you have a draining system to get rid of excess water build up in your chameleon enclosures?
I don't. I tend to underwater using my automatic system so that extra doesn't accumulate. Then I will water by hand as needed.
can you make the same video about the INDONESIAN Blue Tongue Skinks? We have CB Indonesian Blue Tongues available here in the UK, much more accessible than the Australian ones!
Sorry but I have never kept them so don’t feel qualified to do so.

Frank , greetings from Canada 🇨🇦 love your channel , high quality, professionally done videos on so many amazing lizards, I've learned so much . Question , I have had my northern for almost 2 years now , got her when she was around 7 months old , she hides buried in the substrate almost all of the time, I hardly ever see her , she will come out to eat then go back under her tile or bury herself , when I come into the room she goes into hiding , my husbandry is on point , are some blue tongues just like this ? I hear other people , theirs is out all the time, not mine lol , I'm kinda bummed out cause I never get to see her or Interact with her , any tips? Thank you
Hello and thank you for the kind words! Some are more shy than others but I haven’t really seen any that are buried all the time honestly .
My northern blue tongue skink is five years old. Dobby is doing great. I want to put him in an outdoor enclosure this summer. How much do they dig? Is it going to require wire underneath the soil?
They do dig so I wouldn't put him in an outdoor enclosure without some kind of bottom he can't dig through.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne OK thanks
Anyone or you might have the link for the lights?

Crazy my friend just found a northern he really liked at a petco. He text me a picture of it and it is a pitch black line.
Very interesting! Would like to see that. Did Petco have it labeled "pitch black"?
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayneno sir. Just had it listed as a northern.
His is exactly like the second one shown in this video.
So I'm going to say after my friend has had his blue tongue for a while it is not a pitch black line. All the solid black coloration is turning almost to a chocolate color. It's definitely different but not sure what it would be considered.
What are the outdoor temperatures that they can tolerate? For instance, I usually keep my Russian tortoise outside overnight during the summer until the nights get down to 50°. Is that too cold for the blue tongue skink for nighttime temperature?
That sounds about right for northern blue tongues as well. I wouldn't want to get below 50 at night. Easterns could probably take it down to 40 as long as it warms up well during the day. Making sure they have the ability to stay dry is important as well.
@@LivingArtbyFrankPayne OK good. He might be able to stay outside for about four months then which is good. Thank you.
awesome🙌
Hey Frank, what is the height of these tubs? Thx
Nice setups. What size hide were you using with the Northerns??

Could I keep a northern skink in a 38 gallon aquarium or a 39 x 20 x 7 plastic tub?
I'd say yes you can. However, the question I would be asking myself "should I be keeping a Northern Skink in that size storage bin?"
Remember what Frank Payne said, your mindset should be, "How can I provide the best enriching life for my pet?"
Watch some BBC Wildlife reptile documentaries and get inspired by God's creation to try and replicate it at home. A slice of nature right in your home. It's rewarding for both you and your pet. Watching them exhibit the same behavior they would in nature and move around an enriched enclosure is so fascinating to see!
Hope that helps.
i’m actually doing research about northern blue tongues because i’m thinking about getting one, is there anything else you think i should know before i invest?
Nothing comes to mind. They are awesome pet lizards!
Speaking of skinks, any update on your grilled bananas, i.e. Peters's banded skinks?
Nothing new to report yet. Hopefully eggs in the spring. :)
What's your thoughts on LeD lighting for blue tongues ? Beneficial or just uvb plus halogen sufficient? I'm setting up my blue tongues In 4x2x2 enclosures.....
I think using all three is ideal. Halogen and UVB is sufficient but adding LED to complete the spectrum (as best we can indoors) is even better.
@LivingArtbyFrankPayne thanks !! What daily schedule do you have your basking halogens on ? I want to put mine on separate timers like you, I think this really makes sense to only have them on for part of the day ........
@@richardbroadhead822 it varies depending on the time of year but in the warmer seasons around 8 hours.
Is a 75 gallon tank big enough for one
Ideally bigger but yes that's big enough for one.
Where can I by one as a beginner?
I will have some available in early summer. :)

So where can I buy this rack system?
That information is in the VIDEO itself. He said it early in the video.
