I am a new GoldWing owner but I use Amsoil in my Harley and the previous owner of the GW only used Ams in his bike. I have used Amsoil for years. In fact he gave me 4 qt’s and a filter when I got the bike last week. I will order a case for both bikes, and a qt of Severe gear oil for the Final Drive this week. Can’t beat it.
Bought my first Goldwing last spring (2010 w/ 8900 miles). I changed it after 3500 miles, was still very clean. Will probably start stretching it out a lot more. Thanks!
The one thing I noticed is that the Amzoil made the engine run quieter than the Honda oil on the GL. Less valve train noise. In my Suzi the mileage went from 48 mpg to 52 miles per gallon when I went to Amzoil from dino oil. I looked at all the test reviews on oils. Amzoil was number one on reduced wear. So I use it.

Got the Amsoil in my Harley. No problems. Have it in my Triumph as well. Triumph I noticed a smoother shift. Otherwise I change at the beginning of the year or 10k.
I run Amsoil in everything I own and I use their motorcycle metric or dirt oil in my Enduro but you got to be careful what kind of oil you put in a motorcycle if it shares an oil with the transmission a regular synthetic car oil will make the clutches slip it will ruin them you'll have to replace them a lot of people don't know that I have seen many a new dirt bike owners with smoked clutches from running a car oil. Hay Mike thanks for posting this video. Your right about the various opinion on oils. Just like the type of bikes people ride it comes down to what makes you happy. I had a 2009 gl1800 and changing that oil was easy compared to the three compartments in my ultra limited and cheaper two regardless of what brand of oil you use.
My 07 Wing has 103,000 kms on it. I switched to synthetic some time ago and to be honest I don't notice any difference. I was told to expect smoother shifts. Maybe I'm a smooth shifter already. I use the Mystic ATV synthetic oil. I put it on sales alert at the local Canadian Tire and pay approximately $7.00 a quart. Regular 10/40 Castrol is approx $5.39 a litre. I guess time will tell if spending the extra $1.61 is worth it. I change the oil between 5 and 6,000 kms. I change the rear diff oil at every oil change.
Makes sense, u got miles and miles on it.. i use Rotella and it's great.. change once a season.. i add 10k miles a season, if that.. winter too cold in New England, so the bike is put up for at least 3 months..
so you they are reputable in their analysis? not sure i will push every oil change to 12K, but good to know i Can.comingg up shortly on 9K and in the middle of summer...might be a good time to prepare for more rides with fresh oil!
@@MemphisMike901 Yes very reputable. I have confirmed engine claims based on their analysis. Yeah, I would have fresh oil for the rest of the summer, ride baby ride! LOL
Hy Mike.I Have been using Valvoline 10w40 full synthetic and notice no oil consuption at all. change it every 8k miles or once a year. Keeps my mind at ease. TKS for the tips By the way, planning a trío through Memphis at the third week in may . We may place you a vist.
The thing about oil and they’ve made it extremely better. They haven’t been able to completely eliminate the acids that fuel and other things put into oil. Bikes nor cars are 100 % efficient. Meaning they don’t burn all the fuel. So as great an oil does to lubricating and to cool. The cleaning it does stays and it needs out. During colder months engines tend to get dirty due to burn off. Less happens. In winter you would have to drive an hour to burn off and evaporate the moisture or water in your oil. Reason your oil cap gets white sludge in it. As long as oil is in your oil pan and not the bottle. It’s cleaning and suspending things in it. That it touches. If you ride 3 times a week change every 4-8k miles. Amsoil is a group 4/5 synthetic. So a filter change half way isn’t bad but likely not needed. No matter what oil is in contact with hydrocarbons as well as metals an moisture.
M.M. thanks for your learning of different types of oil. I can see your still new at oil types, and different synthetics brands. Procedures and intervals. However proper spark, gap and different types of platinum can be used with premium gas and ignition can be important too. Riding skills also play important in using a wet clutch in the G.L.1800 that’s most of the wear you get in oil contamination. So if your hard or carry a trailer in or dusty conditions then it’s different usage of oils. I use Amsoil oil in my rear differential it runs smoother and quieter.... I run my G.L. Hard and drive over 25,000 miles not sweat starts up every time and has power climbing high altitudes using Cruz controll in AZ, N.V. And other parts. But I use Motul engine oils in mine change every 20 to 22,000 miles, wew no sweat my man, my trick is when I change oils I run regular cheaper oil for 500 miles or so then add Motul with a new oil filter it helps break up the walls in cylinder from film build up it reset the rings back in the bore of cylinders. That how I run all my bikes for many years but not applicable in miles of oil changes. Ducati’s dry clutch and Honda XR650s. Ugh less due to dirt conditions. My G.L. Purrs like a pussy kitten every time.🐓
Mike, I take my Jeep Wrangler off road a lot and the engine is under heavy loads at times, I am going to send in a sample to see what's' going on with it and dropping your name. This should be interesting... because the factory says 8,000 miles, but I change it much sooner. Thanks for doing this video.
Mike, next time you send a sample to Blackstone, spend a few extra bucks and get the TBN (total base number) tested. This figure will tell you how robust your additive package still is. I would venture a guess that with a quality synthetic you will find the oil is still in good shape at 20K. Give it a try.
I have an '02 HD Electraglide with 162,000 miles. Never used anything but Supertech 20 w 50 Dead Dinosaur. No engine work, no add between 5,000 mile intervals. Amsoil/$15.99 qt.- Supertech $4.37.
$28 isn't much to pay for piece of mind and some knowledge on how long to go between oil changes! I've used Amsoil in the past and liked it. I've been using Kawasaki brand recommended oil in the KLR, but only in case there is a failure while it's under warranty.
I normally use Honda full synthetic but last time I bought oil & filter they told me Honda did not recommend full synthetic oil due to clutch slippage? Have you heard of that Mike? Randy
Thanks, good to see an analysis from a lab. Most of what you see on this subject is opinion. It would have been good to know how many miles on the bike when the sample was drawn.
Thank you. This is interesting. My neighbor and I will share cases of Amsoil. He has an f6B with about 35,000 miles and I just rolled 1800 miles on my 1 month old 2018 gold wing. I may get an analysis done on my second oil change to see how the new wing engine is doing early in its life.
Great video Mike! Are you running that in the CB too? I run it in my Harley and did my first oil change in the Cb at 600 miles and put Honda oil in it. Thought about switching to Amsoil when I do the next one.
Interesting video Mike. I still run the dinosaur oil and change it every 8k miles. Since I do at least 10k a year it's always 2 changes since I start the year with clean oil so I know I'm wasting miles. May have to try it just to cover the year on one change. Does the filter also allow for the 12k miles or do you still change it at 8k?
Changed my new 2019 DCT tour to Amsoil 10w40 when I brought the bike home. I’ve now now on 3 2k rides this year. Also replaced the drive differential with Amsoil gear oil Reinitialized the DCT and no problems now at 7k. I’m told as long as the oil meets the Honda spec listed in owners manual no oil should be a problem. Honda has an OEM synthetic and regular dinosaur oil. Have read nothing on the 2018-20 forums on any issues with any oil just brand or cost loyalty. But that is true with all of our conspicuous consumption item - yea and that includes bourbon. 😝
My goodness those "thousands-of-miles" blew my mind. I don't know if us asians just culturally changing the oil every 5,000km for cars and every 3-4k km for motorcycles.
I many miles did you have on your bike when you swapped over to Amsoil? I have an '08 GL1800 and the prior owner used Amsoil from 3K miles. I have only had the bike for six months with about 4.5K since the last oil change and plan to keep using the oil.
@@aaronyork6173 I will not tell you to go against the manual instructions, but thousands of users have zero issues. I still think it is safe personally....BUT, I am NOT a Honda Engineer!
So, which Amsoil specifically did you use and which filter specifically. Which bike was this report based on? I have the 2018 GL1800DA wish why I am asking.
Just got some Amsoil a few weeks ago. I have heard very good stuff about this oil. The oil was very expensive but it’s ok. I have been changing my oil every 4,000miles, but I ride hard on my Stryker. I will now goo to 5,500 now any recommendations? I would love to send a sample of the Yamaha oil that’s in my bike right now after 4,000 miles. Please post information!
Another good oil is Mobil 10w40 High Mileage, but no frictions modifiers that is really important thing, about oil for wet clutch..... if you see Service Conserving on the bottom donut is not good....
Wow, my hats off to you for opening this can of worms... Ok long story short I've been an Amsoil dealer/Executive Direct jobber for 16 years. I've seen it work miracles in all sorts of equipment over the years, oil analysis is an excellent tool to see what happening in the engine and or transmission. Critical numbers in oil analysts are TBN , VI and silica count, there are plenty more to look at if you suspect a problem. As in all things there are several level of synthetic oils but in short if you not paying 8 bucks or higher your not getting a class IV synthetic, more then likely it will be a blend of convention oils and synthetics, its better than straight conventional oil but not as good as a class IV. A few years ago GM came up with an oil standard of Dexos, this is nothing more than a low grade blend that they wanted to charge oil company's .35 cents per gallon to have the Dexos logo... Follow the money as always... Sorry getting off topic.. All Amsoil motorcycle oils are a class IV synthetics, Amsoil filters for Goldwing are a 15k filter, 20 micron filter @ 98.7 efficiency, personally I change our Wings every July we ride between 12 to 15k per year. Ok, let the beating begin..LOL
WoW. Deep detail. Thanks Scott for the detail response man. I looked at the full sheet and numbers. Could not make heads/tails what it all meant but the notes are what confirmed what I was hoping for!!!
@@MemphisMike901 TBN is total base number, it represents how well the oil is doing in neutralizing acid in the crank, your oil started at 11.6 new, full depletion would be around 3.6- 4.0. You did a video on the K&N air filter this is where silica count comes in, if silica count is high the air filter is not performing well or you have a hole some where, over 80% of contaminates come through the air filter. VI is viscosity index, its how well the oil is staying in grade. For me these are the 3 big indicators on how well the oil is doing, of course the report will show chromium, iron, magnesium and such this will tell you whats wearing inside the engine... Ok, schools out for today kids, y'all go play on the freeway..LOL
Couple things looks familiar my Yamaha vmax after brake in dealership recommended mineral oil brand yamalube 10/40 so am asking is ok if am going to synthetic they said stick with mineral because slipperclutch I do little research and for that bike yamalube not even makes synthetic oil from my experience with synthetic I own 2014 ninja zx14r and change from mineral too synthetic after couple hundreds miles my clutch goes bad needs replaced mast said I always keep oil spec like manual says
I currently use Amsoil signature for my big scooter, already running 4500 km (about 2800 miles) in 6 months, the mechanic guy in Yamaha insist that I have to change the oil but I'm still sure it will last another thousands miles.. 😁
Interesting video Mike. I plan on using the Honda Full Synthetic, I've heard nothing but Good about it. Hey Mike, just a little Food For Thought, but did you know that for a Bourbon to be a true Bourbon it has to be made in Kentucky? Im just sayin' though. LOL. Good Vid.
🤔 Hmmmm....it was tasty. This is a High Rye bourbon I believe. never really been a Bourbon drinker until recently.. I'm going to have to venture out on some Kentucky Stuff! Honda Synth is Damn good oil!
After spending 30 years as a career technician at the top of my field I noticed that oil never stops working but it does stop cleaning. I have see high mileage cars that never had an oil change, if you pull the valve cover you really can't see the valve train for the sludge yet the engines seemed to run perfect. (I'm talking 60+K on the factory oil) So you don't want to go to long without changing your oil because the detergents won't make the trip, though I'm sure things have improved somewhat over the years. On the subject of oil filters; they are really not needed. If you think about it when was the last time you changed the oil filter on your Briggs & Stratton lawn mower? Yet it still runs well without one and you probably can't remember when you last changed the oil either. Over the last 20 years we have seen more oil filters on products not because they need it but because consumers demand it, and it's a marketing tool. If your worried about manufacturing flash on a new engine and the need for a filter then it's time you stepped into the 21st century. What we all should have is a magnet in the oil path, I keep a rare earth magnet on the outside of my oil filter. If oil filters do such a good job then why do we see metal accumulating on magnetic drain plugs? It's because the filter can not be fine enough to stop those particles.
@@Bass.Player Thought you said it didn't need it? How many "no filter" tests have you ran? I'll bet the number is none! No shit, Bass Player! Thanks for your "opinion". Let us know when you have some facts.

Simple and to the point...thanks for the info
Good Job MM, We used Blackstone when I was working at F/S and Nissan!
'
so you they are reputable in their analysis? not sure i will push every oil change to 12K, but good to know i Can.comingg up shortly on 9K and in the middle of summer...might be a good time to prepare for more rides with fresh oil!
@@MemphisMike901 Yes very reputable. I have confirmed engine claims based on their analysis. Yeah, I would have fresh oil for the rest of the summer, ride baby ride! LOL
Good analysis. For the price, I knew Amzoil was a good product. RSMF.
Oil analysis, good job, good video, like you I'm sticking to Amsoil, quality comes at a price.
Im convinced it does what I need. Extend my riding miles between oil changes and deliver great results on the GL1800 Engine!
Hy Mike.I Have been using Valvoline 10w40 full synthetic and notice no oil consuption at all. change it every 8k miles or once a year. Keeps my mind at ease. TKS for the tips
By the way, planning a trío through Memphis at the third week in may . We may place you a vist.
please contact me if you do!
Talk, talk, talk, men aren't known to be talkers, however there are those who have the gift of gab.
Can you please tell me the levels of phosphorus and zinc? Thanks
Amsoil is my choice, I don’t like to change my oil that often, and I feel confident with amsoil. Nurse that 🥃 brother!😉
Hey Mike (aka John)lol.... was this your reading you obtained with you K&N air filter in?
My G.L. Purrs like a pussy kitten every time.🐓
Awesome. Thanks for sharing!!!
👍
Mike, I take my Jeep Wrangler off road a lot and the engine is under heavy loads at times, I am going to send in a sample to see what's' going on with it and dropping your name. This should be interesting... because the factory says 8,000 miles, but I change it much sooner. Thanks for doing this video.
I'll be curious!
Mike, next time you send a sample to Blackstone, spend a few extra bucks and get the TBN (total base number) tested. This figure will tell you how robust your additive package still is. I would venture a guess that with a quality synthetic you will find the oil is still in good shape at 20K. Give it a try.
Thanks Mike!!
Good video. I will probably keep changing my oil every 4,000 to 5,000, but I am not using synthetic, and not riding 20,000 miles/year anymore.
I never have good luck with amsoil. It seems my engines are always noisy with that oil. I put Honda GN4 and everything is nice and quiet and smooth.
Interesting
Randy
I have heard of that. Never had any issue with my Wing tho.
Great vid. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, good to see an analysis from a lab. Most of what you see on this subject is opinion. It would have been good to know how many miles on the bike when the sample was drawn.
67,285 on Bike. 12k miles on the oil
Thank you. This is interesting. My neighbor and I will share cases of Amsoil. He has an f6B with about 35,000 miles and I just rolled 1800 miles on my 1 month old 2018 gold wing. I may get an analysis done on my second oil change to see how the new wing engine is doing early in its life.

I use Amsoil and Lucas oils in all my bikes! Motorman In Da Mag
thanks!!
Great video Mike! Are you running that in the CB too? I run it in my Harley and did my first oil change in the Cb at 600 miles and put Honda oil in it. Thought about switching to Amsoil when I do the next one.
Currently running OEM honda oil in CB. I put less than 5k miles annually on it
Good deal no fluff
Thanks for video. Is it better than Motul 300v???
Never used it so cant say.
@@MemphisMike901 thanks... lot's of love from India.🤞👍👌
Is it okay to change the oil from synthetic back to standard?
I do not see why not, maybe others are more qualified to answer that tho. My question would be, why would you want to?
Interesting video Mike. I still run the dinosaur oil and change it every 8k miles. Since I do at least 10k a year it's always 2 changes since I start the year with clean oil so I know I'm wasting miles. May have to try it just to cover the year on one change. Does the filter also allow for the 12k miles or do you still change it at 8k?
I use the Amsoil Filter and according to rep it would still be good. It is a solid filter. I feel the Honda OEM filter is also very well made!
Thanks for the vid Memphis Mike. Do you still ride with Chris Calenti
No sir. Havent in a while. No issues. Just havent
Thanks for the info. Will the full synthetic Amsoil work with the DCT transmission?
I see no reason it would not, but i would encourage to check manual and maybe contact Honda to get an accurate answer!
How often did you change your oil filter? Did you change it at the 12k mile mark also?
Yes
I many miles did you have on your bike when you swapped over to Amsoil? I have an '08 GL1800 and the prior owner used Amsoil from 3K miles. I have only had the bike for six months with about 4.5K since the last oil change and plan to keep using the oil.
At about 15k
Thanks
I just stumbled across your UA-cam channel Amsoil is a very good product have you ever heard of Schaeffers oil
No sir
Are you still using Amsoil metric 10W40 in your goldwing?
Yes
My owners manual says to not use a oil will Molly in it and the Amsoil has alittle Molly in it so I don't know if I should keep using it or not.
@@aaronyork6173 I will not tell you to go against the manual instructions, but thousands of users have zero issues. I still think it is safe personally....BUT, I am NOT a Honda Engineer!
Hey mike, great vid. Do you know the part number for the amsoil filter that you used?
Let me check. EAM103
@@MemphisMike901 thank you sir
Good stuff mike👍
So, which Amsoil specifically did you use and which filter specifically. Which bike was this report based on? I have the 2018 GL1800DA wish why I am asking.
Amsoil 10/40 Metric oil. 2008 GL1800
Click on the link in the description where to send oil for analysis!
Another good oil is Mobil 10w40 High Mileage, but no frictions modifiers that is really important thing, about oil for wet clutch..... if you see Service Conserving on the bottom donut is not good....
It's what I use
Did you have to add any oil to your gold wing within that 12000 miles?
No sir. Never had to
What is the part number for the Amsoil Oil Filter? How can we make you our preferred dealer?
Scott Vallie thanks. Ill look at that Silica # again buddy!!
Sucks bike in storage here in central ny about 26 degrees little snow
Doesn't or isn't it a bad thing to change the oil like 3 times in a season?
Im not sure its a “bad” thing?
What weigh oil are you using. With the blue top looks like 10 40
Yes 10w-40
Hey Mike, is the AMSOIL full synthetic? And do you use an oil filter like the K&N?
Full Synthetic and I use the Amsoil Filter as well.
Isnt it a 100% synthetic instead of full synthetic?
🤔
@@MemphisMike901 That's the reason I got it in my bike. Full synth seems to be a mix off oils still. 100% not I've been told.
Good point I would always suggest checking with mfg regarding the use of Sythetics in Bike specific!
I currently use Amsoil signature for my big scooter, already running 4500 km (about 2800 miles) in 6 months, the mechanic guy in Yamaha insist that I have to change the oil but I'm still sure it will last another thousands miles.. 😁
2800 miles? Im sure you got another 8k miles left on oil. But, at least once a yr.
Good video
On my 9th wing in 30+ years amsoil in all, 20k miles ok but change that filter every 5k
you don't feel you can safely get 8-10K miles on the Amsoil filter?
@@MemphisMike901 I guess that comes from my old school up bringing, better safe than sorry
I'm not saying it has to made in Kentucky to be True Bourbon, The history of Bourbon says it. Ordered the 10c PRO Yesterday.

Thank you! 😊
After spending 30 years as a career technician at the top of my field I noticed that oil never stops working but it does stop cleaning. I have see high mileage cars that never had an oil change, if you pull the valve cover you really can't see the valve train for the sludge yet the engines seemed to run perfect. (I'm talking 60+K on the factory oil)
So you don't want to go to long without changing your oil because the detergents won't make the trip, though I'm sure things have improved somewhat over the years.
Thanks for your detailed reply BP. Always appreciate it!
My Briggs and Stratton mower engine has an oil filter on it. John Deere Zero turn.

From Old Dominick Distillery here in Memphis

Be sure your oil is wet clutch friendly, there that will cause problems!
Amsoil is
Maybe the good oil report is due to Superior engine design instead of expensive oil
No doubt it is a great motor. Would you run Honda Oil 12k miles?
MemphisMike l myself over service at 5000 km intervals here in Western Australia as we have a hot dry dusty Conditions there are other factors contribute to good or bad oil samples Poor fuel quality sustain high-speed riding stop start riding excessively dusty conditions and of course excessively worn high milage engines will also return A poor oil sample
Thats about 3100+ miles or so?
Stick with API certified Oil with the double Donut on the back and you'll never regret it!
